On the day the mighty Toon are in Londinium on the hunt for long lost silverware, here’s a tidy little bunch of vinyl treasures for your own chest.
As ever, I’m happy to send sound files or more images. PM any questions or to reserve.
Charnessa & Charmettes – Personal woman / I can feel my love coming down – Atco 6836 M- £275
(Great funk edged sister soul, Sam Dees penned, recorded at Sound of Birmingham Studios, Alabama, well under the radar, a rarer Atco release indeed, minor edge lift, plays fine)
Little Flint – Pain – Beast 1000 M- £450
(Featuring Wayne Perry on lead no less! not for the feint hearted this Hammond driven dancer out of Cincinnati, Ohio)
Bobbie Smith – You know I’ll be around – Bell 628 M- £225 SOLD
(Bobbie and my fave Azie Mortimer like peas in a pod, beautiful catchy dreamy vocals, feast your eyes pristine copy)
Fred Hughes – Baby boy – Brunswick 755419 Ex £25 SOLD
(Staple Soul on a stocker)
Lovations – (I keep singing) La la la ooh / Heaven told me so – Cap City 109 Ex £350
(3 little darlings hailing from Pittsburgh, but on a DC label, serve up a blinding double sider, “(I keep singing) La la la ooh”, Lowrider excellence, pure clarity on the stunning vocals, “Heaven told me so”, ripe for either Northern or x-over rooms, what a dancer. Some very light scuffs, which DNAP, it plays beautifully. Deep gloss on the surface and clean labels bar a tiny drill hole)
Willie Hightower – Because I love you – Capitol 5916 Ex+ £45
(Bobby Banks influenced dancer)
George Carrow – Angel baby – Columbia 44161 WD Ex £50 SOLD
(Traditional soul perfection on a fab white demo)
Otisettes – In your arms I’m gonna stay – Jonco 52 M- £550
(Stunning lowrider on the top side and a sultry slowie on the flip. The Jonco label belonged Johnny Otis, the girls were his in-house TV show band. Gorgeous copy. And very hard 45 to acquire)
Norma & Heartaches – Nice and slow – Joy Ride 1030 Ex- £375 SOLD
(Infectious femme crossover from a virtually unknown group that I can track down to jamming at a Marquette, Michigan Corpswomen event! Published by Moon Man Pub. Norristown, PA. Made it to the Sound of the Grapevine CD Vol2, but is still very much under the radar?)
Marva Josie – Now is the time / Oohbiskubido – Julmar 500 Ex £85
(Excellent 2 sider, a horn back sassy vocal on the top side, the flip, ignore the title, its a decent soul dancer, on a great beat)
Kavetts – I’ve got to tell you a story – Lendre 101 DJ Ex+ £550
(Some big names surround this early 60s femme R&B 45, including Karl Tarleton, Richard Parker and Andre Williams all prolific on the Chicago scene. Same group as the Okeh release, but no other outings?)
Fabulettes – If it wasn’t for the girls – Local 807 Ex £150
(A recent auction item for John Manship, and according to the write up a rare one, Sax Kari involvement in this raw bouncy NOLA release. 2 Xol)
Dottie Cambridge – Cry your eyes out – MGM 13846 M- £125
(Staple Northern dancer on a stocker, that kaleidoscope MGM always catches my eye)
Lorenzo Manley – Swoop down on you – Original Sound 60 M- £30
(The delectable Tobi Legend, what an artist, some fabulous Detroit outings, this one a cheeky dancefloor blinder. Rarer white demo, some surface marks that DNAP, so grading is visual, it plays great at Ex+)
Paulette & Cupids – He’ll wait on me – Prism 1922 M- £75
(Subtle girl group sound, foot tapping shuffler)
Tangenettes – You’re the one / Any ol’ way – Ran 101 Ex £100
(Under the radar NY girl group 2 sider, obscure 45, rareish)
Bobbettes – I’ve gotta face the world / Having fun – RCA 8832 WD M- £150
(Excellent double sider, one soft the other hard nosed femme Soul. Number on flip label)
Gems – I’ll be there – Riverside WD Ex £70 SOLD
(Unmistakable intro on this vocally superb girl outing, harder on demo, stamped original, off-white label on top side affixed off centre, grubbier flip label)
Love Potion – This love – TCB Ex £100
(Exquisite femme soul, a perfect beat ballad, couple of light marks and tiny edge lift, none of which affects a brilliant play)
