Billy Prophet – What can I do / Sad Sam – Sue 133 WD Ex+ £950
Proper Northern soul double sider and hallmarked with a string of credentials that set it aside as the highly revered 45 it is.
Billy was a member of the long standing and highly regarded ‘Jive Five’ soul group who carved out their own place in the scenes hall of fame, then in the mid-60s Thurmon ‘Billy’ Prophet unexpectedly pops up for a one-off recording opportunity, teaming up with the likes of Sue’s owner and producer Juggy Murray, and the insatiable writing duo of Sidney Barnes and Jerome (J.J.) Jackson who between them created a relentless horn, drum, vocal driven, girly backed, and glockenspiel (yep!) punctuated dancer that must have filled the biggest floors all over the country for as long as many can remember.
Let’s not forget the skills of Rudy ‘Rudolph’ Clark who added another dimension to this vinyl release with the superb flip ‘Sad Sam’ with a reined in, but still punchy mid-tempo dancer, laced with a different style of pulsing vocal from Billy and some lively girly backing. Matching my star sign, Sagittarius music had a big hand in Sue, Symbol, Broadway and the Eastern label releases, and the Soul output we know was huge and so very dependable.
What a twofer, original of course, in great shape, just a couple of minor handling / sleeve marks, that do not affect a mint minus play. Clean labels, just minor evidence of storage marks. A well known dealer has one up for auction creeping past 1250 with a day to go, nab a bargain.
