Another Northern artist that only saw limited releases on a couple of labels. This atmospheric Philly stormer from 65 sits right up there as a DJs trophy and collectors secret. The demo may sit in the shadows of the famed orange stock copy given the ratio that have turned up over the years, but label format aside it’s an absolute belter with the overlooked and decent Motownesque ‘Are you kidding’ on the flip.
Beautiful Mint Minus condition. You don’t get many of these to the pound down the local market!
Yvonne Baker – You didn’t say a word – Parkway 140 WD M- £1600
Unlike Ms Baines, Yvonne packed a load in during her time with the industry, from as early as 54 as part of the Cavaliers (not the RCA group) right the way through to 68 and her ‘My baby needs me’ on Modern release. The bulk of her work was alongside the Sensations on Atco, Junior and Argo, but Yvonne was clearly prepared to move around for that chance of national success, with stints in Chicago and LA in addition to her native Philly base. Reputedly she was asked to take part in a NS documentary but refused to take part and you guessed it ‘didn’t say a word!’ The legacy though is a stunning back catalogue, topped in my opinion by this inspired quintessential Northern monster leaning heavily on a James Bond like intro and backing track to convey her forlorn effort to catch a man. Stunning tune.
Beautiful Mint Minus condition. Frankford Wayne stamped original on the famed twin shields West Coast release, and I'm certain theres no stock equivalent on West Coast. A very tiny edge chip (10 o'clock in image), completely innoculous, has no impact but mentioning it as I always would. Title on flip circled with red pen, how wrong they were!

Here’s a couple of fantastic Northern rarities up for grabs, both capturing the essence and sound of Philadelphia……
