Universal Minds – A chance at love – Charles 1229 Ex £150
(2 cracking sides, ‘A chance’ is strong crossover, and ‘Betcha’ a grower on the low rider scene)
Jackie Wilson – 4 Track EP – Coral CX-11433 M- £350
(‘Since you showed me how to be happy’, ‘The who who song’, ‘Soulville’, ‘Open the door to your heart’. This rare as hen’s teeth EP on the Australian Coral label provides incredible access to 2 tracks that did not get a US single release, ‘Soulville’ and ‘Open the door to your heart’. It took me many years to pin down a copy, but I now have a spare. The vinyl condition is mint minus, and the labels are clean apart from sellotape residue on each side. It comes with a rare picture cover, which is in pretty good Ex- shape although it shows some wear. If you are not caught up with the label aesthetics, this is your chance, there ain’t another coming along any time soon!)
Patti Williams – I’m doing the best I can – Forward 135 Promo M- £150
(Upbeat girly dancer, on a spanking rarer demo)
Larry Atkins – Ain’t that love enough / Lighten up – Highland 1193 M- £400
(Can’t think of many better 2 siders, top class tunes and in immaculate condition)
Danny Monday – Baby, without you – Modern 1025 WD £1000
(Always been a highly sought after tune on the scene, and a bona fide storming floor filler. you can see its wounded, there is water damage on the labels, top side has survived far better than the flip, which I don’t think is held in any esteem so whose looking at it? The good news is, if you are not caught up with the label aesthetics, the vinyl is at least excellent visually with a couple of light handling marks that don’t affect play in any way, and the audio is as good as you’ll get, a M- player that I can't detect any deterioration on. Up to £1700 for Ex or better copies, it’s a fair drop)
Eddie Foster – I never knew – IN 6311 M- £1000
(Fantastic 1967 Ricardo Lewis production out of Oakland, California, and a humble and heartfelt vocal affair built on an irresistible mix of what might be described as amateurish piano plonking, string plucking and drum punching, and as crude as that sounds it doesn’t undermine the composition, it elevates this scorching tune to unimaginable heights for Northern dance floor consumption. Conservative mint minus, deep blue labels, X on top side, and the all-important authentic title etched in the dead wax)
Herb Ward – Honest to goodness – RCA 9688 Promo Ex+ £300
(A classic full-on dancer, what a catalogue RCA gave us, full of Northern goodies. Small mark from a removed dot-sticker on top side)
