Anybody else on Soul Source ever frequent Pantiles, on the A30 in Bagshot, Surrey ?

Not exactly a 100% soul club, but in the 70T's the music they played was about 75%

soul, old and current. I had a mate Phil barrs who DJ'd there guess about 1974 - 76

he was an old Mecca/Torch hand and snook the odd NS choon in when he could.

Many a great night had there over the years, have to say more for chasing women

than spinning to Rose Batiste.......

i used to go there years ago..everyone used to meet in the pub in bagshot just before the village..the hero i think it was called..stopped going yrs ago as i saw a m8 run over and killed crossing the rd....never was the same for me after that...i was approached to put on a northern night around 6 yrs ago..i jumped at the chance but heart sank when the manager asked how many i thought i could get through the door on a thursday night

Don't know how old you are but there used to be an all-niter in Farnborough, close to

the station, underneath the then Yellow Pages offices, think it was called something

like "Blue Lagoon" or something like that, it was a very, very, very long time ago.

im 45 this year..i dont remember that at all..was it bc or ad? ..the only blue lagoon event i ever heard of was in hilsea at the lido run by johnny rolfe then taked over by keith and maxine woon

made him a super-star - very much riding on those Ric-Tic re-issues), Something underneath

the car park in Bracknell, opposite Bentalls, don't know the name, Pantiles of course, best

soul club around was the A Train in Guildford every sunday evening, 100% soul, think one of

the DJ's is involved on Bisley. There was a real Northern Soul all-niter in Portsmouth, put

together by sailors from "Up Norf" called the Marina. On a par with the Wheel as far as music

was concerned, loads of imports, M Lance, etc. It started to go pear shaped with the advent

of funk/protest "soul" music 1971/72 that's when we headed up to the Cats, Mecca & Torch.

Ever come accross a character called Pat Munroe? he used to live practically at Pantiles.

Me and my m8 sophie used to go to the wooden Bridge in Guildford ´bout 1976/77 was mates with Jez bishop (We knew him as Punter then) Think he is the DJ associated with bisley you were talking about. Got dressed up and went to pantiles a few time underage but it didn´t seem to matter so much then.

Think her mum and mine got together found out we were not doing homework after all and i was grounded for a month!

We also went to snoopys in richmond. Anyone remember that?

Originally from Camberley, my friends and I (or on my own) went to the commercial and non commercial soul music clubs around the area during the early/mid 1970's: Bisley Pavilion; Aldershot -Buxted Chicken Factory; Camberley-Agincourt, Shades of Green, Banners/Cambridge Hotel, Hawley Hotel; Farnborough-Town Hall, Queens Hotel, Blue Moon, Big C. Tumbledown Dick; Fleet-Town Hall, Silver Park Club, Fleet Country Club. I also used to go to Reading Top Rank (Night Owl), Farnham-Harveys; Woking-Atlanta; Richmond-Cheeky Pete's; Egham-Francos; Guildford-Annabellas/Cinderellas, Windsor Safari Park Club, plus the club under Bracknell carpark - Dawbourne's (I think).

I also went to the Windsor Safari Park Club....and another club called Hunters in South Kensington...mostly soul/motown played there but still very good music.

Actually called the Atalanta, built as a ballroom in the late 1800's. We used to go there

from Walton, Hersham, West Byfleet, etc. all meet up on the train. Get to Woking station,

down the new bit, past the Albion pub. We'd always be there before the place opened,

queing up was always a part of the experience. The DJ Bob Potter used to play a reel to

reel tape whilst setting up the decks. It was the same tape for all the times I went there,

which I guess must have been for about 2 years. Tracks were Behind a painted smile -

Isley Bros, Right Traclk - Billy Butler, People - the Tymes, Help Me - Spellbinders, Sly &

Family Stone - Everyday people, can't remember the rest. The wooden dance floor used

to bend when it got full and a popular record came on. Boy!! spooky I can remember all

this stuff, I have no idea what I had for tea last night..........

I never went to Pantiles, but went regularly to the Hawley Hotel - I saw my first punks there - until Frenchies opened and took all Hawley punters. I never thought Frenchies was as good as the Hawley though and only went there a few times. I went to the Dawbourne Club a couple of times, including my first All-Dayer; Cheeky Petes a few times; a couple of places in Guildford; a place in Camberley which I'm sure was above the shopping centre, but I can't remember the name; and every Reading Top Rank All-Dayer except August Bank Holiday 1977 when Chris Hill led the conga line downstairs to take over the main room.

I went to the Atalanta once to see a band called Smiling Hard, who were a not very good Brit funk band, and can remember the DJ playing George Benson's Super Ship.

Did anyone go to the Sunday lunch time sessions at the Belvedere on the road between Ascot and Virginia Water in the mid-80s? They could be quite good, but getting out of the carpark at the end was a nightmare.

After the Marina we used to spend all day in Pompey and then go to a club near Guildford railway station on Sunday evenings - forget the name now.

Also went to Cheeky Petes at Richmond (it used to be The Castle), Reading and Croydon Top Ranks and the Orchid at Purley as well as Stretham Meccano and Hammersmith Palais. Also used to go to a little reggae club in Reading - a little basement club, often we were the only white guys in there!

The club in Reading was down some steps with just a Coca-Cola sign over the door if I remember rightly, it actually featured for a few seconds in a History of Jamaican Music on TV once (BBC I think).

Forgot about Snoopys & Cheeky Petes in Richmond ....Use to attend such places when we weren't making the trek up norf or down to yate.

I just missed out on the "Atta" in Woking but I remember the building well didnt it have a pointy roof turret thingy?

we use to go to Woking to buy our harringtons and stuff off the market ..I ended up working on a record stall there late 70s

when we used to go to the hero in the late 7ts it would be rammed on a saturday and sunday night...we only used to drink orange juice there so as to save our cash for pantiles....there used to be untold crumpet there and we were all tightly packed...nice to see a heaving bosom stuff in yer face

Hi all - am really interested in Pantiles' history. Have started a very rough entry on the club on the Garage Hangover website but am starting to collect live gigs there from 1967-1970. I've found quite a few in the Surrey Advertiser and Fabulous 208. Don't know if anyone else has any confirmed gigs from that period. Would love to hear from you at Warchive@aol.com
