I'm thinking Classic Soul - early 70s, maybe the Temps', maybe Norman Whitfield or Whitfield-inspired. The nearest I can guess at (so far) is Brinkley & Parker's (DON'T GET FOOLED BY THE) PANDER MAN from '74 It's a song I've had for ages, trouble is I'm working away from home at the minute and can't get near me choons!
