This question popped into my head whilst I was listening to Marvin Gaye & Tammy Terrell doing "Your Precious Love." Some great stuff. Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" is way up high on my list of all-time brilliant releases.

I do really love the obscure Northern Soul, but I'm a sucker for the Motown as well.

Nothern Soul (NS) is a seperate entity from Motown, NS is essentially the rare tracks/B sides that were never played by the commercial DJ,s. NS was a breakaway from the more main stream disco music of the 70's that became too poptastic and chewing gum type funk.

Whilst this is true to some extent, it has to be said that Northern Soul was "born" in the late sixties by DJ's looking for more records with a danceable beat. The hunt for more of these sounds led to discoveries of B sides etc. When "Northern Soul" was in its infancy it played mostly new releases of Motown records released in the States but not over here.As more and more discoveries were found the scene became more and more popular.Without Motown would there be Northern Soul ?

As you all know the term Northern Soul came from Dave Godin .

My sister had Big Wheels of Motown album too... Love the motown sound and am a huge fan of the more 'overplayed' Soul stuff too, in fact my fave albums for ages were the 'Casino Classics'... Even have the owl on the cover tattood on my arm... Felt a right plonk walking into the tattooists with an album cover in my hand, but needs must and all that.

anyway aint soul music soul music ? we have motown labels among others in our collection.

All l know is l like wot l know and know what l like, what l mean is l buy records to suit my individual taste.

So there you have it, dont really matter whats on the paper but whats on the vynyl and what come out the speakers.
