From the author Stephen Stevlor, a catchup all about how the release of Dave Godin A Northern Soul is going ... Within days of being made available, (launched 15th October 2020, the 16th anniversary of Dave's passing), over a third of this limited edition 1000 print book had been mailed nationwide and throughout the world with books shipping to Norway, Finland, Holland, Italy, Spain, Australia, Canada, USA and Japan. "I knew the book would be of interest because it wasn't just a collection of stories and anecdotes about the Northern Soul scene but concerned a specific character who, although many people in the Soul world were aware of, many of the Northern Soul foot soldiers or, as Dave would call them "the TRUE keepers of the faith!", had little or no idea of this man's importance or existence. This was one of the reasons the biography came about, I got the impression that he wasn't as high profile as he should have been within a scene that he'd given a specific identity to. Plus there were the other facets of his life that unless you were involved in animal rights, or civil rights or the hundreds of other causes Dave championed, you just wouldn't have been aware of. Dave Godin had many sides, to some he was a true gentleman, to others a complete tyrant. Some people loved him without reserve while others, whom I attempted to interview, hated him so much they wouldn't even take the opportunity to destroy him in print, they didn't even want to mention his name. When the book came out I had a lovely letter from a lady who knew Dave back in the day and she mentioned she actually owned a lock of his hair! I immediately imagined, maybe, some kind of romantic liason, while a DJ friend of mine commented "or maybe she just ripped it out of his head when he pissed her off!" Personally, from the impression she gave, I'm sticking with the former!" COMMENTS FROM BOOK PURCHASES: "A great book about the Godfather of Soul!" "The Covid 19 pandemic messed up my promo plans, having to cancel signing events at all-nighters and weekenders around the country. Copies of the biography weren't going to be available in book shops and record stores until nearer Christmas so I was surprised to see it listed on well-known internet book sites offering the book for sale and ready to order when they hadn't actually approached me to discuss stocking it. Some had even taken payment in advance, so I would like to make it clear that these bookstores DO NOT have the book so don't pay them anything. Because of this I've started supplying stock to selected Independent shops in various UK towns and cities, limiting it to just one or two depending on the size of the area- Tallbird Records Chesterfield Beatin' Rhythm Manchester Mark Windle Leeds Soulmine Aldershot Stars-and-Stripes Skegness LP Record Store and Spinning Discs Sheffield. Any Independent interested in stocking the book, please email me." "A lot of people seemed surprised by the quality of the book and the production values. I think they expected pages of smudgy text on pulp paper with a few photographs thrown in. It is a very good looking book and a lot of time was spent making sure, wherever possible, that all the avenues of Dave's life were well illustrated. Well as I said the original post stirred my interest and after reading the post I enquired about their 'Flattening Service' and after getting instructions sent off a quite badly warped 45. A few days later I got it back, the warp was not completely gone but the 45 plays fine with hardly no up/down movement, and was more than happy, It was a low three figure value 45 and so the cost of £12 plus postage for a 'upgraded' 45 was a hit with me. Reported in the papers today Royal Mail postal workers will for the first time collect parcels on the doorstep, in one of the biggest changes to the service as it adapts to the decline in letters and rapid growth in online shopping. From Wednesday customers across the UK will be able to pay a fee of 72p on top of standard postage costs for every package under the new “parcel collect” service. Pre-paid return items will cost 60p per item. Postal workers will collect up to five items per customer per day between Monday and Saturday, subject to limits of 61cm x 46cm x 46cm in volume and 20kg in weight. Items will be collected from the door or from a safe place on the property chosen by the customer. Customers will be able to make bookings only via Royal Mail’s “click and drop” online service up to five days in advance until midnight on the day before collection. Just a quick heads up to let you all know that the doors are open on the new Source Store. Intro The Source Store is the latest new addition to the Soul Source line up. This new feature has been set up to offer members the opportunity to purchase quality selected vinyl and multimedia soul releases direct from our Soul Source Store in an affordable, effective manner making maximum use of all the familiar features here on Soul Source. Two sections are currently open Records - Offering current vinyl releases Magazine - Mags and fanzines More sections will be added to the store front soon. Current Store line up The store line up looks like this... Currently we have the latest releases from Big Man Records, a selection from Kent Records and some Soul Junction revival 45s {the SJ 45s come complete with a members only discount lumped on). Magazine wise there's a fair few back issues along with the latest edition of Soul Up North hot off the press are available. New additions to the stores line up are on their way and do suggest that you sign up to our store newsletter to ensure that you don't miss out on any of the new arrivals. Features Store features wise, all the main ecommerce features you expect are present, cart, notifications galore, shipping calculation, support, secure payments. Plus as the store is tightly integrated with the rest of Soul Source, features such as your account login, emails/pms, search engine, social media integration, newsletter service, are already present and in use by members. Pricing These features as already present do help us keep the store running costs down, which does a positive effect on our pricing and achieve what could be great prices for all members. They also allows us to customize the store to reflect the needs and wants of all our members at low cost/effort and so help us offer an affordable bespoke service to all our members. Shipping The shipping service is again a proven part of Soul Source. It is set up at a low-cost option of 1st Class £1.68 per 45/Mag uk wise at the moment, which is coupled with a store team setup to achieve a quick as possible turnaround of orders. Summary It's early days now, all going well so far.
