  1. Beautiful uptempo, funky edged Northern Soul with atmospheric and uplifting group vocals from the Gentlemen Four, an outfit who seem to have been prodigies of Dionne Warwick (she is credited as producer here and their next release appeared on her own Sonday label). The flip side is a superior group vox midtempo ballad. Can listen to both tracks above
  2. Apple & 3 Oranges - Love Brings Out The Best Of You / My Baby - Soul7 Pure Californian funky soul sunshine from drummer and bandleader Edward 'Apple' Nelson, who first featured for Jazzman way back on our California Funk compilation with the tough and gritty 'Curse Upon the World'. Originally issued in scant numbers on Apple's own Sagittarius imprint, 'Love brings Out The Best In You' is a far lighter affair, a breezy Northern soul dancer which lilts away like a hot Cali afternoon. 4. Fred - Sweet Thing / My Babys Outta Sight (Amen) - Timmion Records Fred broke out on scene with his slept on debut, the crossover soul gem "Love Can Last Forever" in 2016. After a four year hiatus between releases, it's time for his sophomore single "Sweet Thing", and it's clear that his talent is like fine wine, a thing that needs its time. Since his premier release kicked off Stylart, the Timmion sublabel, Cold Diamond & Mink has put soul on the table with a steady pace and from this new track it's clear that they shine some special love for Fred. As a result,"Sweet Thing" is as lush as it comes with a shimmering electric piano, horns on full blast and strings to boot. When fused with Fred's delicate delivery, passionate lyrics, overdubs and a mid-tempo soul dance groove, it all really comes together. There's a gentle southern breeze in the air and can we really demand less from Espoo's finest. View full store item

  6. Carlton Jumel Smith & Cold Diamond & Mink - Woman You Made Me - Timmion Records Timmion releases yet another dance floor scorcher from the "1634 Lexington Avenue" album by New York soul man Carlton Jumel Smith. With its soul oozing a cappella intro followed with a drum & tambourine break "Woman You Made Me" is a perfect starter for the album. That's not say, it won't work exquisitely in single format in your dj set, jukebox or smoky listening sesh. Carlton's chops in testifying and performance really get to shine in these uptempo grooves cooked up by Timmion house band Cold Diamond & Mink. Impassionate horn riffs accompany Carlton's re-entry and it's hard to believe there'll be a still body left on the dance floor when he reaches the first verse. The track doesn't stop morphing, but goes through delicate twists and turns wooing the listener in with each measure. Flip the disc around and rock the instrumental for that early Kool & The Gang or TSU Toronadoes spirit. Which ever you spin, spin it loud and proud! View full store item

  8. Willie West - I'm Still A Man - Timmion Records While arriving to Finland for the first time in 2014 to perform on account of his latest album "Lost Soul", Willie couldn't help laying down a few lyrics at Timmion studios in Helsinki's Kaapelitehdas. The session produced a fresh new track "I'm Still A Man", which continues on the same slow, dark and melodic path, which he paved with The High Society Brothers in 2009 with "The Devil Gives Me Everything". 14. Al Gardner / Jack Ashford - Sweet Baby / I'll Fly To Your Open Arms - Kent Town 174 Al Gardner’s 60s soul classic ‘Sweet Baby’ was issued in France as well as on a now-expensive Sepia single in Detroit, but it has never had a UK 45 release until now. The flip is a terrific previously LP-only track by Jack Ashford, the producer and writer of both sides of this 45. Best known for his percussion work at Motown, Pied Piper and Just, he shows he has a good voice on this great song. Your browser does not support the audio tag. View full store item

  16. ZZ Hill / Peggy Woods - Make Me Yours / Love Is Gonna Get You (Brass version) - Kent Town 169 Z.Z. Hill was Kent/Modern’s main artist in the latter half of the 60s. In 1967 the company recorded him on an LP of soul classics, including Bettye Swann’s ‘Make Me Yours’ from only a few months before. His masculine angle on this marvelous song gave it a new dimension that would surely have fared well as a 45, but the track appeared on a single only in the UK, where it was well received but sold only to connoisseurs. Since then it has grown in popularity and at last it is available again for discerning collectors. Peggy Woods’ Northern Soul stomper ‘Love Is Gonna Get You’ was first on 45 in 1988 as a 100 Club anniversary single. With only approximately 400 pressed, it inevitably became sought-after. Here is the number in its original brass-laden glory: a Kent/Modern masterpiece. View full store item

  18. The Puffs / The Superbs - I Only Cry Once A Day Now / Wind In my Sails - Kent Town 168 The Puffs’ Doré release has been known and collected for years but recent DJ plays have caused demand for the disc to soar. The Superbs’ ‘Wind In My Sails’ was assumed to exist only as a master tape until a few scarce 45s emerged in the early 2000s. Plays from the soul cognoscenti since then have made it a big sound at rare soul gatherings. View full store item

  20. Jerry Naylor / Johnny Praye - City Lights/ Can't Get Too Much Love - Kent Town 167 A tale of 2 sides. One City Lights is a, blue-eyed soul sound that was picked up by northern soul DJs in the late 70s and became hugely popular. The other Can't Get Too Much Love is also a Mike Curb production, discovered in the last decade and a top tune for the rare soul brigade. Your browser does not support the audio tag. 21. Rita & The Tiaras / Dore Strings - Gone With The Wind Is My Love / Instrumental - Town 166 We have already released the longer version of the northern classic ‘Gone With The Wind Is My Love’, but this Kent 45 of Rita & the Tiaras’ masterpiece is the first time we have issued the Doré single as it was originally put out. On the flip is the glorious instrumental version for lovers of that LA orchestral soul sound. Your browser does not support the audio tag. View full store item

  24. Greg Perry / Jocelyn Brown - It takes Heart - Kent Town 156 Greg Perry’s ‘It Takes Heart’ has been played in northern soul clubs ever since its 1981 release. This is its first official UK issue. The flip, Jocelyn Brown’s first waxing ‘If I Can’t Have Your Love’, is a beautifully produced two-stepper that is never played enough. View full store item
