Store: Maurice Williams / Walter Wilson - Look My Way / Not Now But Later - Kent Deep Soul 15
Maurice Williams / Walter Wilson - Look My Way / Not Now But Later - Kent Deep Soul 15 Maurice Williams ‘Look My Way’ was recorded at the same session as the two songs issued on his Zodiacs-billed Scepter 45, although it outperforms them both. It was assumed that ‘Not Now But Later’ by Walter Johnson was also an unreleased number, but a few years later I discovered a Wand DJ copy in the home of the producer Billy Jackson when the singer’s true identity was found to be Walter Wilson. However, Billy told me that was an alias for Tommy Keith who wrote and recorded some excellent soul music. View full store item

Maxine Weldon / Peggy Woods - I'm The Other Half Of You / You'd Better Be Good To My Baby - Kent Deep Soul 14
Maxine Weldons version of ‘I’m The Other Half Of You’ was stumbled upon while browsing Ray Godfreys (aka Raeford Gerald) multi-track recording sessions. Using the same backing track, the quality of the track led Kent Records to decide that a Deep Soul release 45 is in order. Backed with a most pleasing Val Simpson and Nick Ashford song from Peggy Woods, this fresh deep soul 45 certainly lives up to the labels imprint title.

Junior McCants / Johnny Soul - She Wrote It I Read It / Fall In These Arms Of Mine - Kent Deep Soul 13
‘She Wrote It, I Read It’ by Junior McCants only exists on a handful (or less!) of King demos on the flip of his Northern Soul dancer ‘Try Me For Your New Love’. The highly talented singer wails his heart out on a magnificent Deep Soul ballad written and produced by his mentor Charles Spurling. ‘Fall In These Arms Of Mine’ by Johnny Soul on the flip is from the same stable but was recorded in the southern USA with Macon, Georgia-based producer Bobby Smith. It is very influenced by another son of Macon, Otis Redding – in the best possible way.

Eddie Parker / Sandra Richardson - Crying Clown / Deserted Garden - Kent Deep Soul 10
Our Deep Soul series already sports Eddie Parker’s acclaimed ‘But If You Must Go’ and now we have his supremely soulful version of ‘Crying Clown’ taken from the same sessions. Already a great ballad cut by him in the 60s, this sparser piano-led take is as intense as soul music gets. It is backed with the beautiful melancholy of Detroit great Sandra Richardson’s ‘Deserted Garden’, previously only available on our first “Jack Ashford - Just Productions” CD.

Little Johnny Hamilton - Apartment #9 / Crying Like A Baby - Kent Deep Soul 12
Little Johnnie Hamilton was a 60s Los Angeles soul singer whose records are all hard to find, despite their quality. The searing deep soul slowie ‘Apartment #9’ is a million miles from the funk of ‘The Git Down’, recorded at the same session and issued on the Watts Way label in 1967 as a two-part single. Hamilton wails away his pain on a sparse number abetted by some righteous girl backing singers. ‘Cry Like A Baby’, a release on the one-off Soul Shack label, is a more mainstream offering of much charm, complete with strings.

Rozetta Johnson – I've Come Too Far With You / Who You Gonna Love - Kent Deep Soul 04
Up to number four now in Kent's Deep Soul Series and the quality matches the pace with two top sides from Rozetta Johnson. The release notes from that time follow below... Rozetta Johnson’s name is synonymous with the highest quality southern soul, often in conjunction with Sam Dees, who wrote these two sides. ‘I’ve Come Too Far With You’ was a previously unreleased Clintone master until Kent issued it on CD in 1998. The flip ‘Who Are You Gonna Love (Your Woman Or Your Wife)’ is constantly in demand and was one of Dave Godin’s all-time favourite recordings.

Atlanta Soul Artistry 1965-1975 Kent Vinyl LP
Though built with highly questionable finances, gangster Michael Thevis’ GRC, Aware and Hotlanta labels produced some scintillating mid-70s soul music. Thevis knew his limitations and allowed his producers, arrangers and songwriters free reign as long as they worked hard and came up with good recordings. It was the period in music when Detroit and the south got together, as with Stax and Westbound’s Memphis/Detroit co-productions, and Thevis tried to make that blueprint work for his Atlanta set-up. He brought producer Marlin McNichols and engineer Milan Bogdan down from the Motor City and Floyd Smith from Chicago. Smith came with the highly talented singers Loleatta Holloway and John Edwards, while McNichols brought the Counts, Ripple and Deep Velvet to cut in the spanking brand-new Sound Pit Studios. Songwriter supreme Sam Dees was co-opted from Thevis’ Moonsong operation, which he ran out of nearby Birmingham, Alabama, and the resulting sessions produced some exquisite soul songs – several of which charted, making the company hot between 1973 and 1975. Tracks SIDE ONE 1. BIG BOAT RIDE - Dorothy Norwood 2. I’M TIRED OF DREAMING - Joe Hinton 3. YOU WERE RIGHT ON TIME - Ripple 4. YOU GET TO ME - Lee Brackett 5. IT’S GOT TO BE THE REAL THING - John Edwards 6. DON’T LET ME KNOW - Charlie Thomas 7. LOVE WOKE ME UP - Loleatta Holloway SIDE TWO 1. IS THAT ANY WAY TO TREAT A LADY - Jimmy Lewis 2. COMPLAIN TO THE CLOUDS (BUT YOU CAN’T CHANGE THE WEATHER) - Deep Velvet 3. FIGHT FIRE WITH FIRE - King Hannibal 4. YOU AIN’T FOR REAL - Arthur Alexander 5. I’M LEAVING - Joe Graham 6. I’M A DREAMER - Bobby Burn 7. SINCE WE SAID GOODBYE - The Counts

The Weavers Of Dreams - Weavers Of Dreams - Super Disco Edits
Members of The Weavers of Dreams were some of the best Madison had to offer. Algie Hough-Guitar, Clyde Stubblefield-Drums, David Davenport-Bass, Phillip Kelman-Flute, Keys, Production, Jackie Allen-Vocals, Willie May-Vocals. The songwriting and music the collective musicians were making was of the highest order. With this in mind Al made several flights to New York around 1980 searching for a recording contract. Eventually getting a small deal with Carousel Concepts owner David Ward. To this day Al doesn’t really know what happened with the deal. Or how many were actually pressed. In this all too familiar story of long lost hopes and dreams Super Disco Edits are very proud to bring you The Weaver of Dreams.

Denise & Abe / Arthur Alexander - Ain't That Lovin' / You'd Better Listen To Me
Denise & Abe / Arthur Alexander Ain't That Lovin' / You'd Better Listen To Me NW 1 Release Date 28th August 2020 Our Ace anniversary soul release is rich in music history. Westbound Records took over as Detroit’s main label once Motown headed west. In the early 70s. Westbound’s biggest acts were the Detroit Emeralds and Denise LaSalle, who regularly hit the R&B and Hot 100 charts. It was a good idea to team Denise with Abe Tilmon, the Emeralds’ lead singer.

Christopher Jay - Be My Lady - Athens Of The North
Real heads might be familiar with outsider boogie track - Christopher Jay – 'What Do You Want Me To Do', an excellent hypnotic spin for those in the know. We will bring you this further down the line but first we have an AMAZING unreleased banger from Christopher. A kind of floaty Disco / modern thing with wonky drums and bags of charm. This record is such an earworm you will end up walking around singing it for days, and that catch guitar hook….how was this never released, pure fire!! The flip feels like it could be in an 80s montage in a good way, yaughty sunshine vibes.
