An intriguing 45 with a postal address for the label from Knoxville, Tennessee, though whether it was recorded there would only be a guess. Clifford Curry was born in Knoxville hence the probable connection though biographical information on Clifford Curry doesn't throw up any links. It is possible that it is a Nashville recording because by 1968, Clifford Curry was recording there with Elf. Beyond that I have no further information. Clifford Russell and The Martells did have another release on ...

  3. Thanks for the feedback everyone, I appreciate it. Currently my site is not linked from anywhere so all my visitors are through word of mouth. Anyone willing to link my site from somewhere or send my site to someone who would be willing to link it? I could possibly create a links section to trade links. I don't profit off of this in any way, I pay for the website myself and don't have ads or anything like that, I just want to get these stories out more publicly. Thanks.

boba if go to the links page on here ( top menu)

there's a submit link which if you fill it out will add your site to the revamped links feature on here

    - the link also get exposure as syndicated as part of the sites news feed on here and gets sumitted to blog listings etc

  4. is it not a case of that they were used instead of ballast

as doesn't a ship have to be carrying a certain load for best performace, stability etc

so if the load a ship is carrying is light then it would need ballast

but instead of using the normal ballast (water tanks), would it not make sense to throw on some heavy goods that can flog off at the other end ?

so perhaps were used as sort of ballast but not in the way everyone is thinking ?

  5. I think it's out of place on here to be honest. Are the topics getting any views? It's just that many people must have a link to BBC news or similar already (I do). And there's too many of these postings. Hey but if everyone else likes them - no problem.

    cheers Pete

yep agree the amount (7-ish) does seem a bit over the top espically as they all show up around the same time

maybe a sort of summary daily sort of one would work better ?

  6. My thoughts exactly Mr Munk. I was just going to ask him if he was some kind of BBC news spambot.

    Godz

its a test of autopost rss news feeds

picks up new headlines form soul related websites as they are pulished and posts them in that forum

the "breakfast news feed" in this forum picks up 7 or so uk news items from bbc and posts them daily

I meant to post something about it after setting up but didnt

it is a test/trial - and looking at it

    thinking is

soul feeds - a way of passing on news headlines from some of the worthwhile soul sites/blogs that have rss feeds

can look at the headline - if interest - click it - read intro of article and follow the link

news in freebasing - similar but a limited amount , idea being latest news headlines may be of interest and may get some discussion going if wanted

as said it is a test/trial and as such any feedback is apprerciated

    Mike,

You're entitled to your opinions as am I and I've always put them forward in an honest fashion. Whether you like them, agree or disagree with them is outside sphere of influence, but if its open discussion then both sides should be able to put forward their view.

You've said I'm assuming a lot, but unless I've been reading another forum, the criticism of this particular promoter is or was very regular. I have no allegiance to him by the way, but I do have an interest in balance. That's a personal thing and something I've stuck by all my life and its something that I'm not going to change. I accept I shouldn't have pre-empted posts, but there has still been no answer forthcoming why prominent supporters of that way forward chose not to post in that thread. Perhaps they didn't see it, I don't know, and of course I accept that they don't have to answer anyway, as is their right. I also accept that the involvement of that particular promoter, may not have been the reason they didn't post, as nothing was said, I guessed. Probably shouldn't have done that, but have seen similar threads before go down the same route, and thats the reason I don't accept it was done out of arrogance.

Yes I do read my own words and am aware what I am saying on this occasion as I've already said, I shouldn't have pre-empted the answers.

Finally, I have never ever knocked Soul Source, why would I, I've talked about it and openly supported it, and its moderators to detractors. I would ask why you feel it is ok for you to assume you know what I meant by agendas/politics, as it certainly had nothing to do with dodgy/illegal dealings. I've made it clear on numerous occasions that the politics I'm talking about are to do with bigging up venues, and telling people what to like and wear. I certainly don't claim everyone is discouraging open discussion, I answer individual posts and individual people. I don't say we should like this or we should do that, and invariably always say that it's in my opinion so as to make sure people understand I'm not taking the moral highground on behalf of others, the things I write are only personal to me. My opinions the same as anyone elses are open to question, so how am I discouraging open debate, its not done via PMs, I don't try to whip up support, its done in the open? I'm not claiming you or anyone else is doing this, before thats assumed as well, just making the point, what you see with me is what you get.

At the end of the day Mike, its your site, your rules, and your decisions. I am happy to accept I shouldn't have pre-empted answers, but will not accept accusations of arrogance because I hold a diffenent view, or accusations of slagging down a site I really love, they were uncalled for IMO.

felt a need to comment as do feel that you are doing exactly what you are complaing about

"that's for the 'supremists', not the proper soulies."

"pick your free superiority complex up at the door" venues

and could argue that you are indeed doing what you say others are trying to do , create a two tier "them and us" on here

sure the balance of site is important, but the members do actually determine the balance, not one person deeming fit to post every time someones view doesnt match their own on a particular subject

your posts about what and why people are going to post on here, did smack of arrogance to me, its not an accusation or ought, its just how it read to me , same as the agenda thing did read to me as a dig about site

thats how they read to me, felt a need to comment, thats all

  8. Hey John,

I always believed it just said 'The Players' on the original 45 (no mention of New York).

I seem to recall some grief from Ohio Players management, hence the quick press name change.

My copy, though, does say "Cameo" as does yours. I also have a 12" somewhere (which I think came out some time later).

Hope you're well mate. Must catch up soon.

    :shades:

    Sean

99% sure was the players as well, as have a memory of sending off for it as the players and being suprised when turned up on doormat as cameo

the 12 inch has got to be the version that was featured in thank god its friday film and on the soundtrack lp a few years later, was suprised at time to hear it featured but suppose could have been something to do with simons soussans involvement in film

Look through the threads Mike that include these sort of references. You'll generally find I say something after someone has for the millionth time told us that oldies are holding back the scene, or certain items or clothing are making youngsters think twice before trying it out. Nothing is ever said about that for some reason, personally I think its rude to the people who like oldies or want to wear bags etc to hold them up to ridicule because of their personal choice. And yes I does think it sounds like they have a superiority complex and that they think they know best. I think the scene is big enough not to have to alienate an already dwindling population of soulies. Its been said many times on here that the music is what really counts, and I've always held soul source in high regard for that view, now that isn't always the case other agendas have come into play.

I'll give you an example, the thread re: the alnighter on against Lowton. There have been a number of prominent posters on SS that have said the way forward is to put nighters on in big clubs, with great sound systems and this will attract youngsters. So a promoter does this, and do any of these prominent posters say, well done......No, and that's purely because of the person doing the promoting. I know the argument will come forward, no we're supporting Lowton, but the event isn't trying to steal their punters, just get loads of new ones in. To me politics and agendas have come to the fore more and more, and at times the soul, seems secondary.

    bad example

    you're assuming a lot

"I know the argument will come forward"

smacks to me of an arrogant attitude

take it you are aware of all the facts in this matter

"purely because of the person doing the promoting."

    again assuming a lot

do you read your own words?

you are telling people what they are going to post and why!

I would say most if not all sides of most matters get discused on here

using words such as agendas and the tired old phase"politics" which is surely just another word for dodgy/illegal going ons is to me a way of knocking this site, discouarging open discussion and to be blunt doing exactly what you claim everyone else is doing

  10. =============

Doesn't really matter who brought it up, its just another example of people trying to create a two tier system within the soul scene and it just gets really tedious. Why anyone would want to foster an us and them scenario, and appear to be proud of it is beyond me. Its probably the main reason why I and many others don't visit the "pick your free superiority complex up at the door" venues very often.

    Winnie:-)

    ===========

Couldn't agree more, but if you don't want to feud, why say, soulies (I hate that word) it's the recognised description, most of us aren't worried about it, what would you use it its place? Then you say, as if its a solution, if oldies fan broaden their minds....... Well I know how that reads to me. You don't get hordes of oldies fans coming onto SS and saying this is all we should listen to, they actually do go out, listen to soul music and enjoy it. They don't spend all day defining what's right and wrong regarding playlists, that's for the 'supremists', not the proper soulies.

Heres the thing, on a personal level, I like hearing new stuff, I like modern rooms, I like oldies. What I don't like is being led because someone thinks they know better than me. Let these people DJ, let them play their tunes, and then the audience will decide whether they've liked it or not. If they haven't they haven't. Its not because they want to hold the scene back, it's not because they're ill informed, its not because they don't visit upfront venues often enough, its because it hasn't floated their boat. Now that may disappoint the DJ playing them, but he/she should have the good grace to realise, that his/her taste is NO better or NO worse than anyone elses. That brings me back to your statement, "we all love soul music", so lets try to drop the leaders and followers doctrine.

    Winnie:-)

    sorry Winnie

but have to say if anything its your constant banging this drum that to me seem to be dictating how things are

the site is all about talking about current things and as such surely discussion on plays, policy, styles, cover ups, and all that is part of it

claiming it is some sort of elitist thing? well are you not just doing what you are arguing about and putting up divides

"that's for the 'supremists', not the proper soulies."

"pick your free superiority complex up at the door" venues

looks like from here its you whos dishing out the name calling and trying to foster a two tier thing

  11. A : Yes, it could go towards making a headstone for Russ Winstanley's grave when he shuffles off the coil...

B: Does anyone want to sell me Ed Bruce's 'I'm Gonna Have A Party" now it's suddenly become a despicable Country record?

    a. No

but reckon a thread of country soul or is it soul country 45s be interesting

    q. should we give up trying to have a box influence on this thread now and ship it off to freebasing ?

  12. quick reminder

please try and avoid duplication as 8000 clips already up good chance that well known tracks are already featured

and as you can cut and paste a player link for any clip it saves both resources and time

can please try and use the "title and artst" fields where possible

while no problem with odd one, times not available for site to do it for many, so do have to stress that its appreciated if do

    thanks

could be a laugh or could drop faster than a stone

    what ya do is

answer the last question and include the next question in your post

called yes or no but idea is what ever answer -yes or no

you add some "amusing" or "worthwhile" bit to do with answer

    then ask the next one

two rules to keep it sharp and furious

    i. if two people answer at same time - the "offical" next question will be the first one posted

ii. leave any serious attitudes or stances at the last thread

    with me so far thumbsup.gif

    ok here's the first one

    q. have you ever deliberatly mispelt record details on soul source to f*** up anyone who tries to google it ?
