... smile! Check out this site, being a bit "jaded" recently with northern web sites on the internet it was a pleasure ....nah not a pleasure but a f****** joy to come across this one. SOUL GENERATION is the name, and while not coming from a 100% northern (as in music style) angle, it is to me one of the best have visited in a long while. Have been meaning to mention it for weeks, but it was that good wanted to add some words just to praise site rather than a quick mention. Check out the features, well written, informative, thought provoking and enjoyable, the KFC one and Nina Simone being highlights Top Tens, events and more sections all look good read good and undoubtely do you good The Excavations section to me fits in better with what I consider Northern is about. The constant search for decent quality 45s by soul fans, not afraid to pass on tips, no big wallet required. Just plain old soul music searched and talked about by soul fans. Spreadin and building up sounds by word of mouth, passing on info and tips , and so on. Not like some who seem think its just a case of shelling out $$, sponging info on web sites from others and then passing off as own "discoveries" without any credit ot acknowledgment. Design, layout, the look, the way it works all 100% and best tribute I can give it, is if this site is half as good when finished, will be happy As stumbled across this when just have visited some of the most cheesiest sites ever, why do people think that we want more scans of tatty 70s badges, sound clips of the bloody right track, whole northern web side at times sounds and looks like a online version of Phoneix Nites. When saw this site as said, it was like a breath of fresh air. Hats off to all involved a definite "come get to this" for the "soul Fan"! and the link is VISIT SOUL GENERATION know my words are not to every ones taste so heres their own: A new online site devoted to crate digging, deepfunk, northern soul from deep to northern stompers, mod jazz, soul food cookery, art, hip hop and whatever else we are feelin. This is my interpretation of soul - anything goes so long as it has that special something that moves you. Inside you will find the soul kitchen filled with recipes from the deep south and beyond, interviews with recording artists and illustrators/artists, excavations from the crates, top tens, audio clips, club listings and lots more.

A record that may be classed as one of those many off the wall Northern misfits, has been given the 2003 treatment. The record which (so they say) got plays at the Wheel was Rubberneckin by Elvis Presley. It also got one (at least) spin by Dave Evison at Wigan Casino, after the effect it had on floor he said something like "well we used to dance to it at wheel" ( so says my memory) Dug out a video link to hear/see what it sounds like and in my view.... broadband dial-up its not bad in a 2003 mainstream popular style, not as good as that other remix imo, but defintly better than all the pop idol stuff. (Anyone seen the itv advert for pop idol which rips off Corporate soul theme song). And video is well done and worth a watch trivia wise : Mentioned when posted it up in forum another Northern link, Well points were on offer if you said that it featured in Elvis film "Change of habit" which also featured Barabara McNair as one of the nuns, didnt she also appear in Playboy later on, sure got a grainy scan somewhere Theres also another Elvis track which has had plays, 5 points for the title? (as with all trivia stuff, to go and actually check if details are correct takes the fun out of it for me, if feel wrong feel free to pass on, if have thumbed thru 99 mags, 3 databases, 6 websites, again feel free to pass on but ask if it was worth it:) ) Endbit: Someone once stated that the trouble with 45s by artists such as Elvis, P J Proby, Tom Jones is that their voices were so instantly regonisable, that even if they had recorded the worlds best cover version of the worlds best soul track, it would still get slagged down. Yet a mediocre weak white 60s uk cover by some pure junior showtime artist would still be considered more credible by some. Anyone pass on whys that?

Nick B asked us to pass on details of this Saturdays Scenesville, so here you go just hit that pesky read more thing (Check out the great review of last one) read review of last scenesville Hi all, Just grabbing a few moments away from the bus to mention a special one-off Scenesville all-guest sooper dooper spectacular next Saturday (thats right, SATURDAY, unusually for us) at the Phoenix. In the tradition of Scenesville special events, well be trying to make it something you were glad you were there for, and with any luck you wont have to gnash your teeth with envy afterwards when everyone starts telling you what a great night they had once the beer had taken hold, cos youll be there anyway, supping that London shandy half after half after half in a desperate effort to keep pace with the best of em! Leading the charge will be Louth legend ROB THOMAS, the only DJ ever to manage three guest appearances at Scenesville. The fact that hes giving us another try is either rampant optimism or just plain pity. Either way, we dont care, cause if what hes played before is anything to go by hell be taking the roof off, and thats fine by us. Next up is Norwich collecting ace ANDY GILL. Anyone whose DJ box contains the original studio acetates of the Ringleaders "All Of My Life" and "Win You Over" is worth putting on just for that. When he backs it up with stuff like Johnny Summers, The Poets and all the other shite-hot stuff he plays at the Backbeat club, we want him on, simple as that. Then theres STUART TYLER. A box of impeccable sounds, the taste to choose the ones thatll slay you and a head befuddled with Spitfire are always qualities which we like in a guest, but Stuart will most likely be going on earlier in the evening, so youll probably only get the benefit of two of these qualities. Make up your own minds which two on the night. Dawn&me will be bringing up the rear and, as usual, fighting over who gets to play the Dolls - probably itll be both of us again, which is actually good news, when you think about it. Full blurb below. Scenesville. It could get messy. Nick. ************************ Details: NEXT SCENESVILLE! SATURDAY 30th August 2003 9pm-3am THE PHOENIX Cavendish Square, London W1 (Behind BHS Oxford Street, 1 min. walk Oxford Circus tube) Super Summertime Saturday Scenesville Soul Special! with all-guest line-up of ROB THOMAS, ANDY GILL and STUART TYLER with support from Scenesville stalwarts DAWN BROWN and NICK BROWN £6 members, £7 non-members Full info at www.scenesville.com
