  4. Second Monkey At Springfield event of the year, and we were well looking forward to this one, know when you get that feeling? Well we felt a buzz of anticapation going around for this one... Ongoing car probs, clutch status: now only gets us round corner to asda, so had to scrounge lift of Ritchie and Ann, much appreciated. Turned up early and in a soon to be gone chill mood had a casual beer while looking out over the river to England, realising we could flyer it as 1km from England. Sound crew up and fixing, Stevie T due to arrive soon, bar open, as always table/chair rearanging, all we needed now was the booked djs, otherwise mean have to take care of that and that will knock things outta sync, and of course that was what happened. Sue was left ic of the event and soon was a constant stream of members to keep her on her toes. As requested when out and about, all members got thrust in their hands the Drunken Monkey mask flyer, was there a purpose behind these? Well rumous that Stevie T would buy any member wearing one a drink at Locarno on Sunday were quickly killed off, though a sly swig from Bargain Boozes 3 litre 8% £1.99 conniseurs cider may be on offer so dont forget them. Though going by comments it seems that there be a breakout of lot of rare soul fiends kids living the monkey tomorrow By now all things had worked out as should be, both rooms kicked off, Sid Jones from Lime Street Club at Dunkinfield took over, due to communication probs on our side, have to give apoligies to Sid as cause of timings etc he got a rough deal, and though his partner in crime John Purvis from Lime St was delayed he overcome all and made max use of his time on decks and got nite off to a cracking start. Kev Spittle was up next and carried it on, gave out a great mix during his 45 mins, by now nite was cranking up, 10 come and Monkey regular Rob Thomas jumped up and continued from where he left last time kicking arse with top selection of quality,. Carl Willingham was the special guest for this event and the fact that this was his third visit as a dj says just how popular he is at monkey. And the variation and quality of his plays shows just how much depth this man has, Room was jumping now,. sweaty, packed and could cut the atmospheric, floor well busy. After Carls hour it was time for Andy Rix to grab hold and continue pushing it to the limit. As always bashed out quality mix, members lapped it up and it seemed like whole nite building up to a climax. Normally we finish 130 ish, but tonite had to call a sudden halt to the nite at 1am, Steve T managed to fit in 3 finishers to seal nite off Early finish: ok was a bit of a shock but hotel management had valid reasons and while not happy feeling was just had to accept it. Reason was the sound team Dave Eddie and Dave in order to get best sound available had managed to use the hotels built in system as well as there own. This gave the best sound we ever had at Monkey, unfortunately it was too good, due to the way the hotel system worked, it had effect of sending the sound upstairs straight to hotel rooms. The residents of these rooms complained and the comprise was reached to finish at 100. Though other room cracked on later Apoligies to all members, though it happenend as were trying to improve things and couldnt foresee the results, we now know next time Crowd was one of the best numbers wise, offical figures 190, was good to see many regulars from all over uk turning up, Nottingham, Barrow On Furness, Halifax, Manchester, Bolton, Oldham Stockport and all the other North West towns, the almost 100%ers from Cambridge, loads from the midlands, all the North Wales regulars, the Chester boys and all the rest no doubt have missed many more places out apoligies but getting late. One thing noticed was just how many familar faces were there not just from dmsc but all the other quality events around uk, someone once said quality soul quality people. good to catch up with many, and see familar faces for first time at DMSC inc John Pugh who every time meet by either coincedence or strange unknown forces the event is a good one. Gotta say thanks to all, as always it was your up for it attitude that really made the nite, the whole feel, the buzz, the banter, the reaction, imo it was one of the best if not the best. All Era Second room went well, format, sound and all that still evolving, regulars up on nite were Paul Baldwin, Chico, Pete Bangor, Mark Speakman A change in the format of nite which worked well Numbers were up on last time and been told it went really well. Pete B has passed on plays which be at the end of here and hopefully will have a more detailed account of the nite soon. Feedback on nite? Well again it knocked us out, thanks to all who passed on, all appreciated. Have added some earky on line comments at end, If you were there and know were loads of online members there, feel free to pass on your views by hitting that comment button at end. Sounds info, playlists up are below as busy weekend and time against us will add more sounds info after weekend. Of course view above is my own look at nite and as such cruical things as no lites in ladies bogs needing sorting was all over place at times and so view may be different than yours, but whatever your view feel free to pass on to rest of dmsc members by using the comments button DMSC team casualty report, one white car often used by dmsc members to get to many quality events blew up on the way home last nite, Stevie T was heard saying "oil? what do you mean". The amount of dmsc members who tried to view the onlive A55 traffic cameras in order to watch Steve Ts attempts to drag it home the next day serverly overloaded the server causing the whole road network system to crash. Sunday : Can catch Andy Rix, Rob Thomas, Steve Thomas, Chico, Andy Killick and meself at Zanzibars/Locarno event tomorrow in both main and conniseurs room, if cant make it can tune into solar radio either thru web or if have Sky thru the Solar station on there, and listen to the live broadcast . 10. Last ever Tonys As well behind with many things, if dont do it here it never get done so all a bit its rough and ready... Anyway looking back at it the last nite at Tonys was a very good un, think somewhere about 3-400 turned up for this final nite. Popped in to an earlier all-dayer at Lowton which meant we were well up in the mood. Having a laugh we were talking about what memorabilia we were going to rob, then later saw 3 or 4 people carrying out one of the red easy settee things that used to line dancefloor, cracked us up as had visions of a well smart front room, with one of these right in middle, just think about what they might find when checking out whats fell down the sides. (later found out had actually paid for it beforehand so wasn't a case of check out their neck) Someone counted up at least 70 odd from North Wales Coast lurking around, which is a bit scary, (the counting that is!) but gives an idea of how things are. One of our lot almost (or did he make it? never saw the final result) won the privledge of being the last ever person to get chucked out of Tonys, a shocking tale involving Ribenna and all sorts. Sounds billed line was as below Bob Hinsley Mick H Carl Willingham Pip Kev Murphy Pete Coulson Mark Morgan Plus Regs And Upstairs Banging Away Dave Hawkins Eddie Barton Davie Brown Paul Baldwin All was as it always is at Tonys, always to me had its own sort of taste and the djs all dished out what the crowd wanted. From latest sounds, revivals and those Tonys regular always hears. 8 come and that was that, no more Tonys, after so many years of regular events has to be a shame, many mentioned it was a shame that recent nites couldnt have had more nites like the last one. Still live goes on, know the promoting team reckons the new venue at LUX Club Wigan (memberships were handed out on the nite) is going to be a winner. Did have up a few years ago video clips from the Grey Whistle visit in early 80s, shout if needs dictate and will dig. After event thoughts Still smiling at the thought of those carrying the settee down the road as the sun rises over ............... Other thoughts No more doing the 5 times around the one way circuit. No more early morning walks round Blackburn trying to remember where car is parked. What is playing that track from four heartbeasts film about , not one of my favs by a long way Best quote about Tonys "You know what you are going to get and thats what you get...simple!"
  11. Have had some info passed on about Saturday nite Heard Soul Sams and Brian Ellis monthly Broughton event was a good un. 25. Details of an informative article on the legendary Shrine label One of the DMSC regular dj team not only manages to entertain big style at Lowton over the weekend with partners in crime and DMSC regular dj Rob Thomas and John Poole He also helps spread the word with news of a new lengthy informative article on the legendary Shrine label. Which has been published on the website of major newspaper Washington Post Link to Washington Post article is no longer active - see comments below for updated link Washington's Lost Soul By David Segal May 11, 2003 The band is drunk. Not falling-down drunk, but more than tipsy, and it's only midnight, which means the band will soon be loaded. Edgewood Studios on K Street is packed with musicians and well-wishers, including Bo Diddley, who lives nearby. And over in a corner stand the Cavaliers, a five-man vocal group and the stars of this session, here to record a rowdy, 2 1/2-minute R&B track called "Do What I Want." It's the autumn of 1966, and this is the Cavaliers' last chance. Every member of the Washington group is about 30 years old, which is borderline past-it in the pop business. The group knows that if "Do" doesn't chart, the dream of singing and touring full time is doomed. But it's hard to worry tonight. There's a party mood at Edgewood: The musicians, more soused by the hour, keep fumbling the tempo, and to give the song some roadhouse ambiance, the crowd is whooping and shouting through each take. A couple of weeks later, a local label called Shrine Records releases "Do What I Want."...
