Nice quartet to go. Sound files if requested. Flirtations – Stronger than her love – Festival 705 WD Ex £650 (Bang on girl group dancer, real powerhouse floor filler. Probably rarer on west coast white demo than east coast coloured demo, both a million miles behind the west coast red stock though! This is an Original, monarch stamp and delta etched in run out, Red XOL) Majestics – (I love her so much) it hurts me – Linda 121 Ex- £475 (With demos flying out, here’s a nice plumb stock copy, visually has some marks, nothing serious, plays EX+) Don Ray – Born a loser – RCA 9438 YDJ Ex+ £250 (Typical Northern styled dancer from the vast RCA catalogue) Force – Holy Moses – Streaker 5000 Ex+ £550 (Funky edged dancer) PayPal as friends or add 4% please, or I can send bank details. A very select bunch today, most are obscure and semi-known, but all great for today! Sound Files included. PM any questions or to reserve. Richard Paradise – Let me stay – A&T 128 M- £850 Hard to find modern soul monster. This New York based label strikes me as a very small in-house production, with the writer Richard Watson, being one and the same as the arranger, producer and artist Richard Paradise, quite the jack of all trades! Richard Paradise - Let me stay.mp3 Frankie Lyman & His All Stars – I’m Sorry – Big Apple 100 M- £950 SOLD Ripe dancefloor filler, with storming horn and string fanfares, smooth classy vocals on punchy backing. Frankie died young from an overdose. Remains a rare 45 on the scene and probably unknown to many, even harder in this high grade condition. Just a small label nick on flipside spindle hole. Frankie Lyman & his All Stars - I'm Sorry.mp3 Everyday People – World full of people – Brownstone 5000 M- £1000 Mid 70s funky edged dancer, remains hard to find. Audibly and visually M- but has a slight dish to it that plays through without any affect. Just the faintest ring wear. The flip “I’d like to stay” has a light fingernail mark, again DNAP. Everyday People - World full of people.mp3 Sammy O’Banion with Features – Cause it hurts – Delphi 382 M- £600 SOLD Albany, Georgia label owned by Roy Smith, which in amongst a catalogue of beach music does sport some great and rare Northern collectibles. I’ve read that there’s more copies of Oxford Nights than this, but that’s speculation. What it doesn’t change is its obvious rarity, freshness and potential. Neat string intro, melodic beat and mellow vocals on the mid-tempo gem. Story goes, 1000 pressed, the 45 flopped and 950 where trashed, this is 1 of 3 I’ve seen of the surviving 50. Top side is M-, flip looks M- but has some very light feedback at start. Features with Sammy O'Banion - Cause it hurts.mp3 Elsie Strong – You cut the love line – Empire 50105 Ex+ £1400 Cut at Twenty Grand Music, in Norfolk, Virginia, this is a stable mate to Warren Millers, Nottingham Disc Co. and Sounds International labels, the latter sporting the desirable Sheepherders. In 62 Elsie’s flip “Satisfied” on Hit Sound was proclaimed Motown / Northern well before its time. With earlier releases on Sounds International, inc a superb cover of the Tops “Ask the lonely”, Empire and Finally!, she reinvented herself on Legrand between 69-71, a prolific return for a late arrival, and all of these releases have been present on the Northern scene at some point. ”You cut the love line” is yet another find and spin for the incredible Guy Hennigan, hats off to you again Sir! Vinyl is just short of M-, and plays accordingly, the top side label fixed slightly off label. A fine piece of Ol’ Virginian Soul. Elsie Strong - You cut the love line.mp3 Young Devines – Ain’t that sharp – Note 7215 VG+ £375 SOLD Another Georgia label, this time Atlanta based, owned by Jesse Jones, and a sister label to Tragar and Super Sound Inc, known for Tee Fletcher, Sonia Ross, Eula Cooper and others. Jones used the FAME studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama for many of his label’s recordings. The Young Devines tight musical arrangement, upbeat vocals and slick harmonies, and occasional deep bass punctuation's provides a “Divine” masterclass. First press, top side has light scuffs that cause a little feedback on the intro, but it clears quickly as the vocals break in, overall Ex minus. Labels are off white. Young Devines - Ain't that sharp.mp3 PayPal as friends or add 4% please, or I can send bank details. Postage: £7.50 – Special Delivery (Fully insured £500) £8.50 – Special Delivery (Fully insured £1000) £9.50 – Special Delivery (Fully insured £2500) Overseas on request Cheers, Lee- Great Mix for Grabs

I know you – Pacific 542-1988 Ex £60 (Very rare first release, on Manny’s for 100, only the later 104 release shows up on Popsike) Walter Jackson – After you there can be nothing – Okeh 7256 WD M- £40 Larry Williams – I am the one / You ask for one good reason – Okeh 7280 WD M- £150 (Cracking 2 sider, small serial number sticker on flip) Artistics – This heart of mine – Okeh 111809 WD M- £125 (Purple Vinyl, Ted Taylor on flip) Ann Sexton – You’ve been gone too long – Seventy-Seven 104 Ex+ £60 SOLD (Slight edge lift, DNAP) Pat Lewis – Look what I almost missed – Solid Hit 101 M-£25 E. Just the one up for grabs on this bright sunshiney day. Happy to provide sound files if requested. PM any questions or to reserve. Everyday People – World full of people – Brownstone 5000 M- £1100 Mid 70s funky edged dancer, remains hard to find. Audibly and visually M- but has a slight dish to it that plays through without any affect. Just the faintest ring wear. The flip “I’d like to stay” has a light fingernail mark, again DNAP. If only "Wonderful" was on demo............- Atlanta Dancer
Back to the southern states again, and another floor filler attributed to the irrepressible Guy Hennigan. Jimmy Church – Thinking about the good times – Peachtree 101 Ex £1250 SOLD Jimmy Church, a native of Nashville, enjoyed and still does a career that boasts close relationships with some very popular names on the 60s US Soul scene, Bobby Hebb, Johnny Otis and Johnny Jones (& King Casuals), Frank Howard (& Commanders) and not least the emerging master guitarist Jimi Hendrix. Jimmy’s solo recording career spanned many years and at least the Hickory, Okeh, Southern Artists, Sound Stage 7 and Peachtree labels. He was a regular artist appearing on the mid 60s TV show “The Beat”, which provided yet another platform for him to show off his talents. Stax label icon William Bell set up this Atlanta based Peachtree label in 68-69 to provide support acts to a group of already nationally acclaimed artists including the likes of Jackie Wilson, Barbara Mason and the Impressions. Some 50 years on these so-called Peachtree support acts now find themselves eclipsing their higher ranking 60s contemporaries on all counts. Not only known for Jimmy Church’s wonderful up-tempo dancer, a run down of the labels catalogue is like a who’s who of Northern rarities that collectors and disc jockey’s are still trying to track down in any number since the first discoveries. Eddie Billups – Ask my heart, Gorgeous George – It’s not a hurting thing, Emory & Dynamics – Let’s take a look at our life, James Fountain – Seven day lover, 4 Dynamics – Things that a lady ain’t supposed to do – Wow! They all bring varying degrees of rarity and carry that subtle Georgia music way of reaching back into its blues, jazz and R&B origins. With Jimmy’s “Hurt” on Okeh, “Right on time” on SS7 or Southern Artists (if you can find one) making waves on the scene at some time, he did leave his best to last, this inaugural release on Peachtree. Overall the 45 comes out at Excellent visually with just some light lines on the vinyl, with labels displaying some signs of light use. PayPal as friends or add 4% please, or I can send bank details. Postage: £9.50 – Special Delivery full insurance for 45’s up to £2500 Overseas on request Cheers, Lee- Atlanta Dancer
Here’s a cracker up for grabs, an understated mid 70s dancer with happy mood written all over it…. PM any questions or to reserve. Young Devines – Ain’t that sharp – Note 7215 Ex- £450 This small Atlanta, Georgia label was owned by Jesse Jones, and a sister label to his other enterprises, Tragar and Super Sound Inc. both known on the scene for bringing us fabulous music from artists like Tee Fletcher, Sonia Ross, Eula Cooper and others. Jesse Jones had his wits about him, choosing the renowned FAME studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama for the centre of excellence of many of his label’s recordings. This outstanding track rides along on a wave of tight musical arrangement, upbeat vocals and slick harmonies, fronted by the joyous lead Donald Render, with crisp sweet backing from John Dawson and John Jones allowing the unmistakable deep bass punctuations of Jimmy Robertson to take us to new heights. This is pure genius, a masterclass, but what else should we expect from any group signed and guided by the astute Jones. A label misspelling of the group’s name on the first issue 7215 was enough for the promotional team to quickly release 7216, this time with a different flip moving away from the instrumental and including “Do it the right way”. The top side has a few light marks that cause light feedback on the intro, but it clears quickly as the vocals break in, overall Ex minus. Labels are off white. PayPal as friends or add 4% please, or I can send bank details. Postage: £7.50 – Special Delivery full insurance for 45’s up to £500 Overseas on request Cheers, Lee- Philly Biggie
Completely lost sight of this 45 being up for OFFERS ending Monday just gone. Caused by distractions, so I wasn’t able to push it up the page as a reminder, so change of tack, here it is for SET SALE. PM any questions or to make an offer. Vickie Baines – Country girl – Parkway 966 M- £2000 SOLD Here’s the original spin up……. Where in the world today can you find a near mint copy of this mythical STOCKER? Philadelphia's Cameo-Parkway set up was a massive operation, knocking out hit after hit, year after year, easily done in collusion with Dick Clark’s American Bandstand show. Parkway was one half of the main operation, but labels like Audio Arts, Chariot and Fairmount where amongst many Northern producing subsidiaries. Mr. Manship captured the importance of this rarity way back in 2012, when a vg+ copy went up for auction, quoting “four Northern Soul girl-vocal stock copies that are considered the ultimate of the genre to own; Janie Grant Parkway 982 STOCK copy is rare, Yvonne Baker Parkway 140 STOCK copy is very rare, Christine Cooper Parkway 983 STOCK copy is extremely rare and Vickie Baines Parkway 966 STOCK copy is way BEYOND rare! Graded conservatively as M-, no marks, plays superbly. PayPal as friends or add 4% please, or I can send bank details. UK Postage included. Overseas on request. Cheers, Lee- A dozen nice sales for the weekend ..some great tunes
- Coloured Labels
Onto some coloured labels, no method to the madness here, just rock solid Northern, various values and tunes that will appeal to various tastes. PM any questions, to obtain sound files or reserve. Richard Paradise – Let me stay – A&T 128 M- £850 One of the harder to find modern soul biggies, which came out on LP, 12 & 7" formats. The Solid Gold LP, in itself rare enough, commands a £300-400 price tag. I read that Steve Guarnori spun this very hard to find New York 45 covered up as “Daybreak – I wanna stay”, and the longer LP version, which was covered as the “Patterson Twins” appears on playlists. Strikes me as a very small in-house production, with the writer Richard Watson, being one and the same as the arranger, producer and artist Richard Paradise, quite the jack of all trades! Frankie Lyman & His All Stars – I’m Sorry – Big Apple 100 M- £950 Everything you want from an intro, storming horn and string fanfare ushering in Frankie’s typically smooth but lilting vocal on punchy backing, all of which makes for a 45 that defines staple “Northern”. Sadly, this super talented artist died from a drugs overdose at the age of 25, but boy did he fit in a lot of ups and downs in that short time. Remained a rare 45, even more so in this high grade condition. Just a small label nick on flip side spindle hole. Edward Hamilton & Arabians – Baby don’t you weep – Mary Jane 1005 M- £550 ON HOLD Powerhouse Detroit, household Northern Soul, with that strained intro and perfectly attuned group backing selling a story of the fella consoling his girl through absence, maybe Vietnam related? I’ve lost sight of any importance, but it’s the “Mike Terry” credited label design with Nashville Matrix stamp. Very small label tear in the right hand red check, very light ring wear, otherwise a plumb copy. Jimmy Ruffin – Don’t feel sorry for me – Miracle 1 Ex £100 One of the best artists from the impressive group that made up Motown’s core ensemble. Belaires – I got a feelin’ – Palmer 5026 DJ Ex+ £350 SOLD Another corker from Palmer James amazing label, which might live in the shadows of the likes of Jimmy Mack and People’s Choice, but its classic Detroit and not an easy one to turn up. Grubbyish label but the surface is Ex+ and plays accordingly. Ward Burton – Sweet temptation – Panther 5 M- £2000 SOLD Not the one that went through eBay recently, but it is the 2nd copy I obtained from a friend who practically lived at the Mark V Studio in Greenville, South Carolina. He was in a band that recorded on Panther, very tight with writer Will Hammond, whose popping round soon, knew Moses Dillard, the Showmen and the Nomads of Mo-Groov fame. He decided to let go this superb example of a file copy that hasn’t seen the light of day let alone a needle for over 45 years. Precedes the Martha Starr version, and she was recorded at Mark V under Moses Dillard before moving to Detroit. Perfect tune and disc. Marvin Gaye – This love starved heart of mine (it’s killing me) – Tamla 42286-0228-7 M- £600 SOLD Official release of this storming dance floor filler that came as a gizzet for attendees ta conference hosted by the company. Comes with picture sleeve. Edge lift DNAP. E. Rodney Jones – Peace of mind – Tuff 421 EX £200 (Graded Ex due to couple of light handling marks, plays through M- no problems, dh) PayPal as friends or add 4% please, or I can send bank details. Postage: £2.70 – 1st Class Signed For insurance up to £50 £7.50 – Special Delivery full insurance for 45’s up to £500 £8.50 – Special Delivery full insurance for 45’s up to £1000 £9.50 – Special Delivery full insurance for 45’s up to £2500 Overseas on request Cheers, Lee- Detroit Want
Anyone help with an Ex to M- copy of Betty Lavette - Stormy - TCA 002 Cash or trades. Cheers, Lee- White Demos
White demos up for grabs, short list but full of goodies. PM any questions or to reserve. Sandy Wynns – The touch of Venus – Champion 14001 WD M- £150 (Uplifting dancer on a fabulous demo copy) Lee David – Temptation is calling my name – Columbia 44138 Ex+ £300 (One of the most infectious dancers around) Marshall & Chi-Lites - Price of love / Baby it's real - Dakar 600 WD M- £75 (I picked this up at the same time as Anthony & Delsonics on Emerge, and bar the obvious difference in rarity I couldn't separate either in terms of the highest quality of soul on each double sider. I can't remember seeing a west coast release of this!) Blanch Carter – Halos are for angels – GSF 6881 WD EX+ £100 (Early 70s upbeat femme dancer, original copy, minor edge lift) Skyliners – Everything is fine – Jubilee 5506 WD M- £40 (Spare! Understated and subtly moody, a stunning group soul piece, which I always keep a copy of in my boxes) Soul Twins – Quick change artist / Give the man a chance – Karen 1533 WD M- £300 (Monumental double sider from this top notch Detroit outfit stewarded by the one and only Ollie McLaughlin. “Give the man” does it for me, superbly crafted on a delightfully catchy beat, “Quick change” of course must have done something for the need for speed back in the day! Eddie Holland – I’m on the outside looking in – Motown 1049 WD M- £125 (Wonderful motor city soul on an earlier label release. Feint ring wear) Walter Jackson – After you there can be nothing – Okeh 7256 WD M- £40 (One of THE best beat ballads, emotion written all over it and hard to come by on demo) Artistics – This heart of mine – Okeh 111809 WD M- £150 (Purple vinyl release with Ted Taylor – Stay away from me baby on the flip. Northern standard on the top side, one of the Okeh tunes you shouldn’t be without) Velvelettes – Lonely lonely girl am I – V.I.P. 25017 WD M- £150 (Hard to find demo, and one of the best up-tempo girl group dancers from Jobete, one very light graze, DNAP) PayPal as friends or add 4% please, or I can send bank details. Postage: £2.70 – 1st Class Signed For insurance up to £50 £7.50 – Special Delivery full insurance for 45’s up to £500 Overseas on request Cheers, Lee- London Record Shops
