Weast Coast Rarity
Up for grabs, a fabulous West Coast offering that appeared and disappeared, and set sale for ease PM any questions or to reserve Johnny Praye – I can’t get too much love – Sidewalk 911 M- £1000 in Apr 67 Billboard’s R&B Spotlight predicted Johnny’s “I cherish your precious love” would break into the R&B charts, and while it isn’t a bad track, the real deal was tucked away on the flip. The Northern scene has only been familiar with “Can’t get too much love” for a decade and a half (or so), and it’s earliest airing was under the cover of a more familiar J.J. Jackson. Sidewalk Records was established in 1963 by an 18-year old called Mike Curb and based in Hollywood, California. Although Curb was a high school dropout, he proves that an education isn’t everything, he not only ran a decent Record Co. he went on to be a NASCAR car owner, and politician who served as the 42nd Lieutenant Governor of California. Sidewalk productions later became a subsidiary of Capitol Records, with many Sidewalk recordings appearing on another Capitol subsidiary; Tower Records. The label seems to have catered for a range of genres, so it’s not surprising that the soul output was limited. Peggy Larey’s “Welcome home”, a semi-known crossover tune is the only other soul release I am aware of, and of course less is known of Johnny Praye, but the legacy he leaves is one hell of a dancefloor buster with cool lyrics. This from a label with a large catalogue, but only one Northern rarity, how often is this the case? This superb copy has M- vinyl, and only one very small feint mark on the run in, which does not affect play. Labels are graded Ex+ because the top label shows a nearly indistinguishable 10p size off white stain and has light handling label wear on the centre. All in all, it’s a top copy that comes with the fabled artistic company sleeve. I can hold until payday if it helps! PayPal as friends or add 4% or bank transfer please. Philly Cracker
Up for grabs, a wonderful Philadelphia release with legendary status on the scene PM any questions or to reserve Jimmy Wallace – I’ll be back – Alpha 006 M- £725 Along with the R&B and Country orientated label Chestnut, Alpha was a division of Don-El Records. This Philadelphian set up was owned by C. Percy (Donald) White and operated on the same block as the V-Tone / Len labels. The best years were 65-68, the labels flourished locally with some national success. Don recruited a very tight team, with the majority of his output by Bobby Martin arranging and conducting many tracks, supported by reliable writers like Robert L Martin (an alias for Bobby?) and Jerry Williams who provided this wonderful track. Wally Osborne became involved as a producer for some and there was also close Motown links, with Wallace’s “Forever” on Alpha 002 coming from the pens of Brian Holland, Freddie Gorman and LaMont Dozier, with rights to Jobete Music. The label was not short of quality Artists either, the likes of Johnnie Alton quoted by Osborne as a fantastic talent, the Celestrals (of later RCA fame), Ronnie & Joyce, and the somewhat obscure Cottage bound Fluffy Falana. Wallace and the Celestrals released on Don-El too, amongst other great acts, notably the Kittens and one Eddie Holman. We have been fortunate for “I’ll be back” to grace the scene since the days of Stafford, growing in stature as the years go by. This copy has a M- surface and playback, however it is pressed off-centre, but this is remedied by a purpose fit spindle adaptor, resulting in a perfect play as per the sound file. The labels would grade Ex for just a couple of handling smudges on the cool purple label. I can hold until payday if it helps! PayPal as friends or add 4% or bank transfer please. Postage: £8.50 – Special Delivery (Fully insured) Overseas on Request Cheers, Lee Jimmy Wallace - I'll be back.mp3

Rare RCA Stocker
Just the one RCA stocker up for grabs today Sound file on request Message any questions or to reserve Willie Kendrick – Change your ways / What’s that on your finger – RCA 9212 Ex £750 One of the hardest issues to find on the label, right up there in competition with Lorraine Chandler and Gia Mateo, and what a picture it makes in all its dark ominous glory. Double bubble here with 2 fantastic sides from the treasure trove of Pied Piper, “Change” the up-tempo R&B tinged Northern dancer, and the stunningly emotive beat ballad “Finger” on the flip, you couldn’t want for 2 better sides and at the opposite end of the soulful spectrum. I thought I’d nailed a copy 2 years ago only for the seller, a very genuine chap, to tell me he was unable to find it in his collection, so the wait went on, and now like busses 2 came along in an instant, so one of the pair is up for grabs. There’s nothing between them condition wise, this copy has signs of light wear on the “Finger” spindle hole and a couple of light pops, so overall the 45 is Excellent condition or better. It is one and the same copy sold by the excellent Phil T last week, so don't worry no 50 count turned up I'm afraid! PayPal as friends or add 4% or bank transfer please. Postage: £8.50 – Special Delivery (Fully insured) Overseas on Request Cheers, Lee

Vanguards
Just the one lovely group dancer up for grabs today Message any questions or to reserve Vanguards – Gott’A have love – Lamp 92 Ex+ £300 HOLD Sits in the shadow of their biggie “Good times, bad times” and the under the radar rarity “Before you take another step girl”. This Herb Miller owned, Bloomington, Indianapolis label was relatively short lived, but a 5-6 year operation threw up not only a host of Vanguards tracks, but also the Pearls “Shooting high”, Moonlighters “Lonely baby” “More than I can stand”, the latter co-written by Bobby Womack and the Ebony Rhythm Band funk monster “Soul heart transplant”. Given that “Take another step” is only known for a handful of copies, and not generally catalogued I suspect there may be other releases on the label yet to surface. This excellent 70s dancer recorded in stereo boasts the usual Vanguards qualities, great lead, deep backing and superb instrument arrangement. Probably not as well known as it should be, but then it keeps good company as mentioned above. Vanguards - Gott'A have love.mp3 PayPal as friends or add 4% or bank transfer please. Chavez
Not sure this’ll be on anyone’s wants list, but I’ll give it a go… Message any questions or to make an offer Freddie Chavez – They’ll never know why / Baby I’m sorry – Look 5010 M- Offers The Look label was a relatively short-lived subsidiary of the Starday-King Records Inc merger, which featured Bethlehem, De Luxe and Federal as the others in the stable. Starday Records itself was formed in 1952 in Beaumont, Texas by Pappy Daily and Jack Starnes, Jr. The "Starday" name is a combination of Starnes' and Daily's names an the label recorded Country & Western, Cajun and sacred music. To cater for specific audiences the Look label was supposed to have specialised in mellow rock music, but as with most independent labels in the US they will always feature at least one track that UKs soul aficionados expose, interpret as Soul and take to their hearts. Freddie Chavez was from the South Broadway area of Albuquerque, New Mexico and was the creative force behind Thee Chekkers, with Freddie on vocals & keys, Rolando Baca lead guitar, Severo Flores sax, Gabby Gabaldon trumpet, Gene Romero bass and Ralph Gonzales-drums. Thee Chekkers found their way under the stewardship of John Wagner from Delta Records, he also owned the best studio in town, resulting in their 1968 release on Look 5007 “Please Don't Go / Lack of Love”. Whilst Wagner produced both songs they were written by Chavez. Both tracks got solid airplay on local Duke City radio stations because they looked after their local acts. Thee Chekkers didn’t record anything else under that name but appear behind Freddie on his 1967 Look 5010 double sider “They'll Never Know Why / Baby I'm Sorry”. The top side has ripped up dance floors throughout the UK since its introduction in the 70s. He is also reputedly Dave Newman of “Make up your mind” fame! Freddie moved on to Chicano Soul with the Majestics, and latterly with the Spinning Wheel, a show band with a full horn section that toured the Western states and enjoyed a successful run on the Vegas strip. In 1974 Freddie formed the Freddie Chavez Foundation, which is still active, favouring jazzy soul numbers, pop standards, and every style of Spanish music. Freddie will appear live at SOULTRIPUSA in Vegas between 15-22 March 2018, no doubt some of his immense Northern sides will be performed and will be something special to witness. This blue stock copy is as they say, “as rare as hen’s teeth”, only a handful known, which puts the already hard to find original demos into the shade. A near mint playing surface, which plays back with superb fidelity has only one blemish, a couple of tiny pressed in dimples on the flip slide, but they have no effect on play. There is a red felt tip A on “They’ll never know why” label, and as with most 50 year old 45s there is some light ring wear. If you’re tired with the anthem on the top side, which is brilliant anyway, the underplayed crossover flip is just waiting to take centre stage for the next 50 years…… Freddie you’re a “Genius” Sir. Up for offers, starting at £2000. Will close at 9pm Thursday 8th March 2018. Bidders only appraised of the bid history and being outbid. PayPal as friends or add 4% or bank transfer please. Postage: Special Delivery (Fully insured) Included Overseas to be discussed. Cheers, Lee Freddie Chavez - They'll never know why.mp3 Freddie Chavez - Baby I'm sorry.mp3

Chicago Rarity
A stunning piece of Chicago artistry up for grabs Sound files included PM any questions or to reserve Devotions - Do do de dop / Can you explain it - Nation 61165 WD Ex+ £1500 Piecing together information for solo artists and groups that release only one known outing, not an uncommon occurrence on the scene, it’s nigh on impossible. That said, a lack of provenance is sometimes a good thing for the mystique of an artist, group or their record. One such group is the Devotions and their superb double sider on Nation. We know Butch spun “Do do de dop” covered as “Lovers plea” by “The Magictones”. Even my turn to "Soul Harmony Singles Book", courtesy of legends Jeff Beckman, Jim Hunt and Tom Kline with its 16,000 listings doesn’t reference the artists, correct flip side, label number and year of release, which tells me that in 1998, even though big UK names contributed to the books content, there was still very little definition to this 45, even if a handful of copies sat in the hands of the artists, family, collectors and DJ’s. The Devotions were James Rushing, James Whitlock, McKinley Norris and brothers Ed and John Berryman, all from DuSable High located in the Bronzeville neighborhood on the South Side of Chicago. The group had signed for the Salem-Nation Record Co. Inc, based on South Wentworth Avenue, and whilst theirs is a 1965 release, it’s hard to decipher what releases on this relatively strong label run came in what order. Looking at the likes of Tammy Levon, Jackie Beavers, The Cheers (highly recommended double sider), Silk and Leontine Dupree it’s my guess that the 65 outing was an early release on the label, the question is why didn’t we ever see more from this fine group of guys. When the labels are studied in greater depth, the name “J. Byrd” appears on both sides writer credits. This is highly likely to be “James (Jimmy Early) Byrd” who worked at Boston’s black radio station WILD between 1960-1970. Byrd was known for launching the careers of many R&B legends, and maybe in this and other cases providing the tracks for young aspiring artists to launch their career. He was best known for keeping the peace in Boston the day after Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated. The Mayor of Boston wanted to cancel a James Brown concert fearing rioting and it was Jimmy who led the charge that convinced the City to let show proceed. He demonstrated the power of black radio during one of America’s darkest moments. The 45 itself remains rare, sought after and often talked about, and if you’re like me a title like “Do do de dop” may be the signal to ignore! but as we find out the composition, arrangement and lyrics on a track may turn out to be far superior than that in the window display - title. 2 classy sides, full of youthful harmonies and classic horns, one out and out mid to up-tempo dancer the other “Can you explain it” a sublime beat ballad. Just 4-5 very light ticks after the top side intro prevents me going M- on this. PayPal as friends or add 4% or bank transfer please. Postage: Special Delivery or Overseas Tracked and Signed Included. Cheers, Lee 😉 Devotions - Do do de dop.mp3 Devotions - Can you explain it.mp3
