Hi Imogen, i deal a lot with Ray as he wrote for Spring/Event and GWP, the CDs Kent have done on those labels invariably contain some of his work. We just put out Ann Bailey's version of Sweeping Your Dirt Under My Rug on the Manhattan Soul CD. The quickest way to look at his song titles is to go to BMI.com and interrogate their repertoire search engine at the bottom right of the page Ady
  2. Hi Mick, I can help with one of those queries. The Pied Piper RCA recordings were recorded at RCA's Chicago studios and United Sound. Many of the acts, including the Cavaliers, Metros and Dynamics, were put up in a hotel there for a week and Larry Banks would rehearse them all before going into the studios. RCA spent a lot of money on the projects and chose Chicago because they owned the studios. I'm pretty sure we listed several of the musicians on the Rare Collectible and Soulful Kent CDs we did of the issued and unissued RCA sides. There are session sheets for most of the recordings. Ady

I think the full quote might be about old blues and soul fans so it was their perspective not remotely mine and they reckoned it was all sub! Ady
  5. Mark, you're praise is all the more appreciated because it is so hard won. Mwah x
  6. Dekka, we're working on the super-injunction!
  7. Tabs, did Winston get you back to the station OK? He gives lots of lifts but we've never known one be to a bloke before!
  8. What's happened to the British soldier? They're all hugs and tears these days! Seriously Simon, your comments are very appreciated and I can honestly say unsolicited as you would not accept the cheapskate bribe I attempted. If it was a very pleasant surprise to you, it was a minor miracle to me, I was almost gonna PM you and say don't bother it's gonna be dead. There were two alternative London dos on, little buzz on here and a wave of apathy around some areas of the London Soul scene. More importantly I promoted it like an idiot by basically being so busy with kids, work, Cleggy and Donna's finals that I did the bare minimum, I think the DJ list was only sorted a fortnight ago. Despite all that the night took off like a Tornado and it was marvellous to feel the buzz, the vibes and the grinning and gurning faces. I feel Butch really grabbed it by the throat and gave a first half hour of his Greatest Hits, from there on there was no let-up. All sorts of characters turned up, I hadn't expected the Jacksons from Accrington (not Burnley!) or even your fine selves till you came on here and wasn't Sean on great form, when he's on fire, as opposed to exploding, he wins the Northern punter of the year award. The youngish DJs gave it their own edge and their records are crossing over to the crustier element, myself especially. Pete Hulat did a great dep job for Mick and he does indeed have his own plays too. I've already got the DJs sorted for July and will be printing flyers and extensively plugging it, so you can bet you're bottom dollar it'll be dead! Ady
  9. Brian Murray lived in Russia for a long while and resurfaced at the 100 Club about 18 months ago on good form and came to about 4 nighters in a row and then disappeared again. Ady
  10. We've got the 100 Club all-nighter on in London this Saturday and we'll be playing it as the last record at 6am when everyone's going home after a soul and dance filled night; it gets emotional every time. Ady
  11. 6TS was the first to use the gaff in 1980 but the bar shut at 11 which was no good for the alkies so we moved. Great night though. Ady
  12. Hi Lorraine, How come this one was recorded by Nancy and Willie at very different tempos? Which came first? There must be a story there. Welcome to Soul Source, it's a wonderful meeting place. Ady

I might be guilty of this. The chaps at the Hideaway and other upcoming clubs were approaching R&B from more of a mod/Northern angle and were playing a lot of records that old R&B fans would have rejected as too poppy or not authentic enough (maybe with strings or female backing vocals). As New Breed was a track on the CD and it was a new angle on old music, I called the CD that and described it in the notes as the whole scene, which was taking liberties but helps to sell discs and was a convenient and quite apt handle. It could have been worse, we gave the world Acid Jazz! Ady
  14. We'll have to ask Fred Bridges in October!
  15. Thanks Dave, it's odd how it changed so quickly. It's still Travler music so they must have complied with it.
