  1. As far as Nothern Soul tracks are concerned, I dont think any vinyl, cd, mp3, or any other reproduced format has generated any money for any of the artists other than a pitance.

On the other hand when these artists who are still alive and are lucky enough to get brought over to perform in front of a few 000 fans, it must make it almost worthwhile for them.

How much did Frank Wilson get for 'soul survivors 1 cd' ? not much, I guess.

Free distribution of the music at least 'spreads the word' and might just generate enough interest to get a promoter/dealer to search the artist out and bring them over here, as has been the case for the last 30 years or so.

  2. BTW modern IS disco sh**e ....and thats a FACT not an Opinion!!!!!

    lololol

    :D

Disco is over 30 years old. Modern means recent. Be more specific, dont generalise, and keep your opinions to yourself.............Just my opinion and its a good job everybody has one in my opinion, but hey thats just my opinion again. Its never ending this noinipo malarky.

Ok, a few years back a couple of Northern Soul 'hits' that were commercial flops when first released got reworked and became big pop records. Thats a fact, not a defense of why, what, when, if, but, etc etc.

What Northern Soul tune and modern artist combination do you think could follow these two into the pop charts purely based of 'commercial pop appeal'

I'll start off with Robbie Williams singing 'Your ready now'

    (JUST A LARF, FOLKS)

  4. Some great opinions expressed to a potential revival, which will happen in some way as there is no 'new scene' for kids at the moment.

Of course it starts with curiosity, and some will not get bitten by the Northern Soul - way of life bug, but others will and join for the long term.

Once you get a few dozen small groups around the country who meet up at venues and discover how great it is to have mates far and wide, with virtually no trouble, enjoying spine tingling soul influenced dance music, it will be.

For the same reasons as we got hooked.

Well come on theyve got the basic Northern beat, theyve got the basic Northern Dancers, theyve got to find a new direction. Duffy/Amy W etc.

Are we going to have/have already lots of curious young uns coming to venues to get more of this 'brand new scene' being invented (again).

Its got to be encouraged, and hopefully they will discover the real deal and not the manufactured stuff in the charts.

Just like in the 70s with Weakspot/Sharonnettes/Footsee etc, it got us interested and then we moved on, so dont knock em back when they turn up.

  6. Were obviously from different ends of the scene. Having been into Black American music of the 60's and 70's for 30 years, I find it painful that a play that i put 4 years of my life and soul into, has been hijacked and taken totally out of context. I personally dont find the prospect of 4 white actors and a dodgy house band , playing hits from Wigan, very inspiring. Would you like the dj's to sing the songs to you at events, or would you rather listen to the vinyl?

Also, the" pun you like" selling of it? its degrading, tacky and S--te!? Like some nights I guess!

Manys the slip twixt the cup and the lip as four kids look for soul satisfaction out on the floor!....I shant go on, you might get aroused! But, really...trite, crass Sh--te.

Do you not see an irony in the fact that these artists were exploited and misrepresented all those years ago in the U.S.A and now a bunch of white actors are going to be doing crap versions of their songs in a flimsy pantomime? Wheres the respect? Its not how I would show it!

I guess, a certain "weekend soulie" type might go and see it.....thats just a sad fact of life. :(

So were you going to do this? After 4 years of effort, why would it stop you just because someone else beat you to the punch. Surely you must have been trying to reach your goal too long to give up on your journey now.

You know 7 days , 52 weeks, 1 year, is a long time and Times a waisting, so keep on keeping on or time will pass you bye and even though you think it will never be over for you, time marches on.

  7. Maybe.

Joe must have thought he was onto something. Maybe it was a preminition that one day it would sell well as 'Against my will' on a pressing etc.

Its just amazing to think that if either version had sold even a few thousand copies what it would have been like in the local discos/dancehalls when they got played. (What treasures the US missed out on.)

  8. I must be missing something, it looks like a good idea to me, but as I only went to Wigan Casino a handfull of times Im no expert if its a true reflection of those guys who went week in week out.

Might be better to see it and feedback the producer etc what could be improved rather than write it off. Assuming they are planning to tour it eventually you may become there special advisor.

Im falling in love with you baby - LJC, followed by Put your loving arms around me - The Sherries / his daughters take.

Of course they are loved by us, but seriously was it possible by changing the lyrics and singers/vocals on the backing track to get a commercial success that eluded Joe?

  10. Horses for courses. Used to pack CWG dayers dancefloor in the late 70s.

Too furious for most ageing punters to dance to today.

Oh how great it was to get a couple of hours of tunes at that pace, dance throughout, and still be able to walk the day after.

What was the reaction of the guys and gals of the 'pre Dave Godin' branding who had been happily listening to this special underground scene of uptempo soul style of music when it suddendly had a 'brand definition' tagged to it in the term 'Northern Soul'. Was it welcomed or unwanted?

  12. I must agree with a few comments that if you want to know anything, its very likely that the answer will be found on here.

    being

The most amazing question I have ever got an answer to was the details of a cover up played at CWG by Poke, that all I could remember was the line ding ding ding...........................ding ding ding ding ding ding, and a few days later someone posted a sound clip of the tune. AMAZZZZZING.

So I dont know about individuals being brilliant, but the members of this forum, deffo are as a group.

I was just watching a programme a few days ago about the money made on new singles and the result was that it is extremely rare that a new single (well cd, these days in most cases) hardly makes enough money to cover the total cost of production, marketing, and the rest. This must be a nightmare if it bombs.

Obviously in the 60s with our type of music there must have been a pot of gold available if a single record sold big time, and perhaps the losses were not so bad, if like so many it bombed as far as sales are concerned.

My question is considering the current situation, is it the end of inependant single production?

  14. No matter what IL did would ever be accepted on this scene now, by a large amount of its members.

It must be his life long ambition to actually make a tune that would be accepted by all, but I cant see it happening.

If anything his output is going backwards. Some of the tunes mentioned went down well with young kids fresh to the scene back in the 70s like me, but the Northern Soul 2007 experience is just awful.

Yet Duffy and Amy W seem to be nearer the mark, so maybe IL just he needs the right support.

At the end of the day, there is enough material coming out naturally or still yet to be discoverd without trying to produce ready made Northern Soul in my opinion.

IL should just accept his place on the scene as a former icon, and not spoil it by putting out this stuff targetted at a scene that does not want it.

  15. The point is if a soul night advertises its music policy and it stays within it, nobody can really argue, its when it promises one thing and delivers another.

Its not a new problem, but it is a persistant problem.

Ive never heard a ska record played at a soul night ever, and would ask for my money back if I did (Unless it was advertised that it could be a possibility in the first place).

I suppose 'Across the board' covers all angles, so a good marketing plan could get away with anything.

  16. Ive got about 5000 tracks from various sources including Northern, Blues, Motown etc on my IPOD and keep adding. I just like the fact that with this many tunes (and alot more still to add) its great not knowing whats coming up next.

Nowt better than sticking it on a charger/player/speaker on holiday and using the shuffle feature to get the variety.

With cds, tapes, etc I got to the point that I knew the sequences coming up and its predictable and boring after a while.

Long live the ipod. Even better having the latest one with the touch screen as you can log on to the internet and play the tunes stored on utube etc for nowt and again pick and choose.

  17. A few points.

First of all its great that new sounds are still being introduced and welcomed.

When Mr Levine sold his various collections, how many tunes were then 'broken' by those who bought them? Playing a record once as was the case sometimes hardly gave them a chance to be 'broken' and there must have been that much stuff that some of these new discoveries of the last 25 years were always there anyway.

And finally in the 'SoulBowl soul packs of the late 70s', when the scene was in decline how many tunes sent out for 10 pence each have be 'discovered' all over again?

    Food for thought.
