  17. Mainly from Detroit??? sure major soul city I agree and that period 66-68 produced some wonderful tunes but you have to through Chicago which IMO matched Detroit pound for pound, L.A/West Coast Mirwood is a prime example of a West Coast Label which sound was and still is a good template of what we now know to be classic Northern Soul, Philadelphia, New Orleans, New York etc. into the mix and open up the period to cover 1964 - 1969 I think. Regards - Mark Bicknell.
  18. Yes early 90's Bridge Hall Hotel but it was no hotel more a working mens club type venue...lol Paul Brennan and Mark Valpond ran soul nights there but handed the venue over to myself, Pete Hollander and Dennis Billingham, it was around the same time as we ran The Concord Suite, Droylsden and a bit later Hyde Town Hall, the allnighter there ran for maybe 18 months on and off, there were at least three managers through the venue in that short time, we later found out that the gig was totally illegal as they never applied for an allnight dance licence...lol we did get the odd visit from the police but they never bothered us, it was a great little allnighter alway's full holding a couple of hundred people, the venue was knocked down several years ago and I think it's a supermarket now. Regards - Mark Bicknell.
  19. Perfect reply, can't really add to that, I've certainly found where I want to be...Stamford Bridge on a Saturday afternoon bliss....lol Regards - Mark Bicknell.
  20. The term or name 'Northern Soul' is retro and nostalgia in it's self, a term coined by DG back in the early 70's, for me circa 2008 the term 'Northern Soul' evokes everything naff conected with the rare soul scene, baggie trousers, soul patches, T- shirts etc. etc. and all the other pointless tat that goes along with it. As a music term it's first class and is a easy way to tag, soul music in the main played in the North simple as, as with many things connected with this scene the name and the term has been used and abused for far too long. Regards - Mark Bicknell.

  24. A couple of years ago at The Orwell in Wigan when the guy's had the Northern room going upstairs and I'm sure Kirsty will remember this although in jest I'm sure she shouted to me as I went upstairs something along the lines of 'Mark gonna play the same records you've been playing for the past fifteen years then?'............ laughed it off at the time but never a truer sentence spoken to me, recently I have declined and cancelled a number of DJ bookings for several reasons which I won't go into as some are not connected with the Northern scene at all more to do with personal and business stuff, but to be honest I'm bored with the whole DJ deal and process, Kirsty was right to a degree as because you might have a half decent box of top tunes in time it can get a little predictable and I simply started going through the motions, Bobby Kline, Four Tracks, Cashmeres, Majestics, Elbie Parker, Troy Dodds, Jimmy Burns etc. etc. almost like DJ'ing by numbers and because you think that these records and others need to be played as I always applied the give it the best you think you got type of ethic I've basically hit a brick wall, the funny thing is I still have access to some blinding records which are not so over exsposed and do channel these on the radio show, the other side of the coin is many venues do not want or allow change or different records so it's somewhat of a catch 22 situation in many cases, I must say I feel as free as a bird to collect and enjoy what I want now and it's a joy, best music in the world if you can do your own thing. Regards - Mark Bicknell.
