There’s a lot of high priced 45’s sitting on lists, could those who can afford already have these records if so will prices fall slightly as dealers won’t want stock sitting around.
could well be a combination of a) top end collectors more and more having accumulated what they were looking hence not buying that much (anymore) b) too much supply of high end items currently in general and c) of course less disposable income on collectors side in general

Heres a funny bit of trivia with that record: When I had Gary Spencer over here to deejay at our allnighters in Berlin late eighties, this alongside Jr. McCants, Deon Jackson, Idols etc was one of his main spins. I fell in love with it upon first hearing. So Gary knowing how much I loved it offered it to me first refusal when he was selling up a couple of years later, maybe 94 ? Still remember paying 300 GBP for it, a VG+ copy, telling myself "thats crazy, you cant tell that anyone" ...how times and PRICES have changed ! However, a few years later I had to move it on (to Timmy Boy Brown) and thought I would never ever get it back. Fast forward a couple of years, maybe ten, and a US contact of mine phones me "you wouldnt believe what I just found on top of a pile of records on the basement stairways of a LA second hand shop!" ...that baby was (and still is) mint- ... did cost me a wee bit more than my first copy though LOL ! So there I was a few months or maybe even years later with that record in my box sitting next Carl Willingham (RIP) in a Leipzig coffee shop one morning after the two of us had deejayed there together, and guess what: He had bought my old copy back then from Tim Brown and there we were, the two of us with the same ultra rare record sitting next to each other in a Leipzig coffee shop thousand miles away from where that record was published some 40 odd years later ! I mean, what were the chances... ?
For the record: I am that crazy that I also successfully hunted down her other Phelectron 45 "The Victory Song"..and I even love that one 😉

Marc, I think you've mistaken the 'look on my face' episode. It wasn't because I heard someone else playing the United Sounds, it was sitting there, contemplating listening and suffering an hour or so of Gospel !!
Well, lets just agree it was late in the night.. 😉 Late in that very night when this got uncovered which of course would have given you all the rights in the world to look a bit surprised.
Greg got his copy years before from pestering the former owner for years at a drive in so he told me laters.
Fun fact: Someone took a picture of that very moment when Greg played it that night - its somewhere on fb

Up vote Cheers
The very first time I heard it was on one of the early Kent albums - On The Up Beat I think. Only ever heard it played once, Ian Clark I think at the 100 Club in about 1986 (though my memory might be letting me down there). I've got the issue as well. Great record.
Seconded mate, the tune had sth like a cult status amongst the first German Soul generation, the KENT educated one. First time I heard it "live" was then in 1989 @Leighton Buzzard allnighters, sounded awesome in that huge hall. Demo here since decades and one that will stay with me till the end..

I bought Sams copy of him about 1980 or maybe a touch later, and kept it for a good many years. At the time I understood it to be the only known copy (or at least that was the impression I got).
When when I sold up in the late 1980s, it went though Domar and I understand ended up with Tim Brown.
I only played it out a spots maybe a couple of times, never really gought on.
Think it's still quite rare, but no idea how many copies.
Nice one, so Sam`s old copy now resides with me as I bought Tims copy back then. I too only gave it the occasional spin here and there.

Marc, thanks for the comments. Two questions/thoughts:
- Had not heard of The Fortune Tellers, clearly a Philadelphia group. But all The Show Stoppers were born in 1948/1949, so seems unlikely they were in The Fortune Tellers (not impossible, though). If there is a connection, could it be older Burke brothers? And is that acetate from the 1961 recording? Anything you can clarify on that would be great.
- Houseparty was written by Carl Fisher (Del Sharh) and Joe Thomas, The Show Stoppers guitarist, at least according to the publishing credits and my conversations with Bruce Weinroth. Am I missing something here?
Cheers and thanks for reading the piece.
Hi Joel,
sure and yes, Fortune Tellers and Showstoppers same group. The Sheryl 45 and the acetate are one and the same song and recording. Credited to the Fortune Tellers (45) and Showstoppers (Jerry Ross acetate).
These links might be helpful
https://music.metason.net/artistinfo?name=The Show Stoppers
This article informs us that Solomon Burke put the four brothers as early as 1957 😮 on the show business map
https://wiki.edu.vn/wiki32/2021/10/18/die-showstopper-wikipedia/
And finally the 1969 UK release -eight years after the of the Fortune Tellers Sheryl 45- is credited to "The Showstoppers"
https://www.discogs.com/master/1211732-Showstoppers-Just-A-Little-Bit-Of-Lovin
John Fitch wrote the "ANBAHP" flipside "What Can A Man Do" and was a guitar player (apparently also for Frankie Beverly & The Butlers) Later he went on to write some 130+ songs for different artists incl. the hit "Shame" (Evelyn Champagne King)
-
Interesting article and heres some add. showing their first incarnation (same line up) as the Fortune Tellers. They cut two 45s between 61 and 63 - what always puzzled me was that their 61 release has them as Fortune Tellers (on Sheryl Rec.) where on the og studio acetate they are already billed as "Showstoppers"... six years before they actually released as the "Showstoppers" ! However, the acetate clearly shows a strong and much earlier connection between the band and Jerry Ross, predating the Heritage release by seven years !
John Fitch not only wrote "Houseparty" but as their backing band guitar player also did a lot of touring with the Showstoppers incl. their UK tour. This tour not only generated the Showstoppers Beacon 45 release but also a release of a very nice John Fitch 45 which got some interest from the few upfront venues & DJ`s in the recent past.

They are "Gold Star" acetates as I recall , if that helps ... ?
Marc put some snippets on FB but I won't post them here without his permission.
Thats right mate, Gold Star. The Marvelos except for their very last 45 (on Modern) only ever recorded for and on WB or its subsidaries Reprise and Loma. As one of them 4 tracks later found its way on to a WB 45 flipside ("Yes I Do") my guess is that these four tracks were done as rehearsal for the WB executives to decide wether they take the group from its soon to close R&B subsidary LOMA to the mother label for greater exposure. Feel free to post the snippets if you like.
Some other LOMA connected tracks are by a group called the Fabulous Dynamics who went on to become the Soul Shakers. One of them tracks is an early work on "Somethings Burning".

My 2 cents here the 'no explanation needed' side was first picked up on the northern front some 10 years ago as 'something obscure' and else (that's for sure) by some dee-jays without better not 'overplayed' tunes as it was still a fairly easy pick back then (got mine so). It's an OK record but never one that I find exiting to play home. As for out I would never have dared. Music is lazy and the vocals pushy to the limit of parable to me.
The under therapeutic obstinacy 'low rider' commercial boat (now sucked in by hipsterism and other similar almost Satanic cults - so clearly not the real-deal elder folks out there) is starting to seek deeper and deeper in some strange musical realms at times I find. Going for the odd small pressed-up runs of small labels records with deep pockets newcomers investors willing to 'splash' their money with arrogance anytime they can.
You know what - "It's an OK record but never one that I find exiting to play home" - really hit the nail on its head. I just thought to myself in all that maybe 15, 20 years I have (and love) said record..it never ever found its way into my always changing dj box. So yes, a good record but not good enough in teh sense that there are trillions of more outplay worthy tunes out there. Having said that and reading what others said about its flipside I will give THAT another close listening the next days. Must say I cant remember it.

...interesting to note (and I myself did not before this thread) "JAH" was also written by Mr. Jarvis himself !
