Whenever I am invited to do the Hideaway in Manchester I always only bring about 25 45`s with me...knowing I only have two 30 min spots....and I am far from being arrogant (I hope ). After my the first three years Paul Welsby asked me wether I was not afraid to have not enough records with me in case someone already played stuff I was plannig to play. I had to answer it had never happened before so I was quite confident it wont happened now Marc

Hi James, think we had exactly this before...however, Butch by no means is a Hot Box DJ. In fact he even dislikes the term. To start with he is not even selling a piece (out of a so called hot box) if he hasn`t got a second copy... Butch is a leading and fabulous DJ becuase he has a box to deejay with that brings out new goodies that the so called hot box DJ`s after hearing (and watching the dance floor reaction) are hunting and trying to obtain. He is using the pace he is using to change his playlist very sensitive in respect to give each record the time it needs and to present a new reccord when the time is right for it, beside that I say thanks god he is not rotating his playlist faster, I could name you at least three DJ`s at once that would loose control of their sense of balance (and maybe wallet) if he would rotate as fast as he could However, his goodies most of the time come straight out of his huge collection at home. Not by selling/trading an outplayed item out of his dj box to finance the next (auction) biggie Marc

Got this update via email: Hello there: As a member of the O.V. Wright Memorial Fund team, you are receiving this email to help keep you informed about what's going on. This past monday, June 23rd, there was a meeting in Memphis at which Red Kelly delivered a Cashier's Check in the amount of $1763.02, which was the total amount received so far through our PayPal campaign, to Preston Lauterbach, the man who started all of this in the first place: The other gentleman in the photograph is Sylvester Sartor, the newest member of our team. An invaluable addition, Sylvester knows just about everybody in Memphis, and will be assisting us as we move forward with our plans. He is currently in discussions with the Cemetery about just what type of memorial our contributions will allow us to purchase, and we will keep you posted on what he finds out. Now for the exciting part: Sylvester has been friends with Willie Mitchell for years, and was the man behind getting Willie his long overdue 'Trustees Award' at the Grammys this past February. He agrees with us that any celebration of O.V. Wright's work must include Mr. Mitchell, who produced virtually every thing he ever recorded. Thanks to Sylvester, Red was able to meet with Willie at Royal Studio on June 22nd, and talk with him about our plans for some kind of tribute concert this Fall in conjunction with the laying of the stone. Here's what he had to say: "...you've got the eggs and the ham, right? Well let me tell you something, if you all are the eggs, I'm the pig!" In other words, he's whole hog on this and ready to go. We spoke about using Hi Rhythm as the back-up band for the concert ("no problem," he said, "I practically raised Teenie Hodges up..."), and spoke a little about our concept of a host of different singers performing O.V. Wright's material. Which, of course, brought us to the subject of Al Green: "Al's funny," Willie said, "Let me call him. I'll tell him when he's got to show up, and he'll be there, don't worry." SO, as you can see, this whole idea of ours is beginning to grow. With Willie on board, the possibilities are truly amazing. The target date for the concert is Saturday, November 15th, with a graveside ceremony (and possible Gospel concert) scheduled for the following day. There is an incredible amount of work ahead of us to make this happen. We are working on possible sponsorship options now, as well as political and governmental backing. A concert of this scope (which, if you think about it, not only honors O.V., but Willie Mitchell as well here in his 80th birthday, Grammy award winning year) needs to be held in the right setting (like the Orpheum Theater), and consequently will take some serious financial backing. We can do this, folks. There is no force so great as an idea whose come. It is time for Memphis to stand up and honor O.V. Wright, Willie Mitchell, and the incredible body of work that Royal Studio continues to produce to this day. We welcome any of your thoughts and contributions about all of this, and your assistance in spreading the word. There are, of course, no firm commitments on any of this as yet... and I am writing to you before we post anything on the web about it... but just imagine the possibilities! ...like Al Green, Don Bryant, Otis Clay, Percy and Spencer Wiggins, Syl Johnson, Ann Peebles, etc. etc all backed by the one and only Hi Rhythm. Hey, got two of them and I am sure more a collector than a "hot box" DJ... Must admit although I can see why (especially with todays prices) people would rather have one small "hot" box of tunes instead of a collection but somehow it seems to me that some of these hot box DJ`s can`t be really deeply in love with the music. There are hundreds not to say thousands of records in my collection I wouldn`t dream to take with me to deejay with these days and yet still I couldn`t sell most of them ´cause I would miss them too much. No, I don`t play CD at home... Still from time to time I have to sell the odd item to finance a new buy but that is only when my monthly cheuque takes too long Two of my fave DJ`s have an extensive collection and are far from being "Hot Box" DJ´s...those two are responsible for the most "new" sounds (since years) which in return all Hot Boxers are chasing later on. Must have something to do with their way of collecting me thinks..... Marc

Just "inspected" the label a bit further..As a Ron Nichols labour it has a po box in Ohio but was based in and with a NYC adress So indeed it could as well be an Ohio group as a NYC group... Marc

I still have my Sabra 45 and its not off centre. the tune saw some kinda re-activation early 2000/2001 and it was then I sold some Okeh WD´s. never came across an issue by the way. However, great tune. Still remember one night in 1997 when I played this (p**d) six times His other 45 on Decca as Louis Jones is also very worthwhile (both sides). Have a sales copy at 100 UKP if anyones interested. Marc
