  1. Just out of interest what does Keb play off when he does his northern guest spots...got asked to dj at a party the other week and took a box of 50 45 s in an old plastic box....the audience loved the fact I was flicking through the covers pulling them out cueing up .......CDs are sooooo last millenium.
  2. It's up to the promoters really. He must have told the promoters that he only had cd.s and they were okay with it.I wonder if he would have borrowed a collection if they said vinyl only.I can't imagine it would have been hard for him to source a box.
  3. Northern Soul Folklore.............didn't dj Frank (Ian Dewhirst) get his teeth knocked out with a dimpled glass at the Mecca protecting the Soul Fox...it was all downhill from there.

  12. There was no defined style as acid jazz.If you listen to everything that was defined as acid jazz you would be none the wiser as to what it was.Listen to the Perry Lois interview re the split between jazz funk and jazz fusion.
  13. Anybody got a copy of this on the UK Spiral label from 1972.Dit 4 is the catalogue number.Ex Cond Please
  14. And I thought the workies clubs were retro trendy..throw the darts players cabaret turns out and get with it.Have you seen what sort of nights this club has on!!!! It's cetainly not wheeltappers and shunters.https://www.workersplaytime.net/whatsonOctober.htm although i'm ditching the northern soul for northern cabaret funk https://www.amazon.co.uk/Working-Mans-Soul-Various-Artists/dp/B000J3F7N8
  15. Perry Louis talks about his club dancing career whilst in Japan. This may answer some peoples questions how the soul/jazz/funk scenes developed in the south and the associated dancing styles..
  16. It does get confusing Rare Groove to me is the Saturday Night Fish Fry Norman Jay JB inspired funk that was played in the late eighties....ie Maceo, stuff on the King Label,Clarence Wheeler, Last Poets ..horn led funk etc. Everyone else calls the other scene...I think two step.To me it was boogie played down here around the time of the rare groove scene...very slow 80s productions one deejay was Lloyd And The Boogie Boys and it was a predominantly black scene. Two Step to me was the northern soul scenes offshoot the modern scene which was played by Yogi Haughton, Searling,Curtis etc in the mid to late eighties and was a predominantly white scene . The Jazz scene evolved from the jazz funk scene which was Cassinellis in the north,The Goldmine-Canvey Island,Purley Alldayers....everywhere really and it was the dancers that wanted the music faster.....the older style bop was played in The Berlin Club in Manchester and some other clubs were the south east was definately more fusion based...the dancing styles were miles apart as well as clothing.Fusion was slip on patent shoes, tight jeans, leather jackets, rolled Benny hats and the northern style were baggy 50s demob suits, wide ties and spats. There was a thing for small camera boxes as well to carry spare shirts etc. Heres a picture from one of the very first Southports Im at the back doing my best Frank Spencer impersonation and there's a quite famous deejay at the front. me at prestatyn.bmp
  17. Spot on...........and that's where it all met at Talkin Loud in London. The old Electric Ballroom jazz dancers were left in limbo when Paul Murphy left and Peterson took over. When the jazz dance scene ended at the ballroom Peterson took that crowd on to Dingwalls after a brief reappearance at The Wag on Monday nights. This was a melting pot for the leftovers of Rare Groove, the hardcore Electric Ballroom type dancers, disenchanted mods and people from the boogie scene....which is why you got Art Blakeys-The Feast,Alive-Skindo-Le-Le,Milton Wright-Keep It Up,James Mason-Sweet Power,Clarence Wheeler-Right On,Jean Luc Ponty-In The Fast Lane,Roberta Flack-Feel Like Makin Love and Ramp's Everyone Loves The Sunshine all played in the same afternoon. The outside world (most of them) were too busy at acid House.I still have some 12's that were pressed at the time ie Ray Barretto's- Right On and New Jersey Kings-Party that was released on baseline as they were that popular in the clubs.I remember buying one of the first Acid Jazz 12's which was The Bottom End/Kitty Bey-Byron Morris And Unity....this was typical of the sort of sound that The Monday Wag and Ballroom boys were dancing to.....and still are. I went to Shiftless Shuffle last week and the London Jazz dance scene is still thriving to a mainly seventies heavy fast jazz fusion beat. The Deep Funk scene picked off where Rare Groove died and mined it deeper.
  18. Here we go......this is the latin jazz stuff like Snowboy plays...pitbull latin jazz Jack Costanzo Tito Puente Joe Cuba
  19. Thinking about it now and you're probably right.I'm sure Terry had something going at the production village in Cricklewood as well. There was also the boogie scene in london too which was from memory after the rare groove stuff.I remember 2 step mostly from the early Southport weekenders played by Searling,Jonathan Woodcliffe,Bob Jones and others.I used to try hard to like it but I found the music too smooth and insipid ......we used to run back into the Cotton Club jazzroom where Norman Jay or Peterson would be deejaying.I suppose the other room was the modern scene w hich had evolved from mecca sounds to 2 step.Come to think of it Colin Curtis was playing it as well.
  20. Latin soul and Latin jazz are totally different.Snowboys live music is definately in a Latin jazz bag.Try these on youtube Bobby Montez-Kontiki,Jack Costanzo-Atu,Candidos Comparsa lp,Cal Tjader-Song Of The Yellow River,Eddie Palmieri and Charlie Palmieri stuff, Tuto Puente-Titos Odyessey.
  21. I was around doing clubs in this era.2 step was more of a northern thing apart from Terry Jones etc and the Norfolk village scene.Couldn't stand 2 step myself and always had to leave the soul rooms at Southport after 20 mins as the music wad dull as dishwater. The only saving grace was when Searling played a northern oldies set.Back in London the deejays were playing stuff like Milton Wright Manfredo Fest Say It Girl loads of Roy Ayres They Call Me Mr Tibbs Eddie Bo CLarence Wheeler RIght on etc. Even the fashion was different.....2 step peg trousers dress shirt slop on shoes college boy hair and geeky glasses.London rare groove leather box jackets Carpenter jeans black boots tom o shanter hats and shirts from Rockit.
  22. I collect different sorts of music, freakbeat, psych, jazz, funk, northern etc and try to collect the best music of every genre....never bothered being a label completist as most have their fair share of turkeys....I do breathe a sigh of relief though when I see big money records advertised and hear them and find out they are crap (IMHO)...that's one I don't need. There are quality music collectors, just rare collectors, label completists and people who just want the music on any format....i personally have always been into original stuff and wouldn't settle for a fake picasso on the wall.
