I agree - this interpretation of an old classic by Al Kent shows his total understanding of quality black dance music both old & new - & to my way of thinking that is a talent worth having ( & rare !!).

Here is my take on records like this & a few of the angles it can be looked at 1 - Northern Soul fans who listen & think how could they do this to a JJ Barnes classic ? - they have just ruined it by putting a "disco beat" behind it. 2 - Northern Soul fans who listen & think that is an refreshing interpretation of a JJ Barnes classic. 3 - Soulful House fans who know nothing about Northern Soul or JJ Barnes & listen to it with no bias at all.

Barnaby Bye - "Can't Live This Way" Eighth Avenue Band - "The Whole Thing" The Brothers - "Are You Ready For This" (Will always be a New York Disco tune - it is NOT Northern Soul) High Voltage - "Country Road"

Two copies that I know of on The Fylde Coast - mine & Pete Haigh's. What is the going rate for this tune now ? It will help me decide if it is a "Northern Classic" or "Disco Dross"

Yes that wonderful piano riff was used in many dance tunes thereafter - I love "Someday" absolute classic.

  12. Honestly never liked any of them - reasons below What Kind Of Lady - Dee Dee Sharp (Ms Sharp, who I adore, becomes Ms Shouty on this) Let Her Go - Otis Smith (SingalongaMax chorus) Girl Across The Street - Moses Smith (Dreadful lyrics) Nothing Can Compare To You - Velvet Satins (Rock & Roll) 'Cause You're Mine - Vibrations. (Extremely noisy)
  13. What Kind Of Lady - Dee Dee Sharp Let Her Go - Otis Smith Girl Across The Street - Moses Smith Nothing Can Compare To You - Velvet Satins 'Cause You're Mine - Vibrations. All stone classics to some ears - but not mine. However, I LOVE the Del Larks !!

  18. As you say a great LP all round - as regards the cover & name it all adds up to being a heavy funk group - of course when you listen to it their soulful harmonies take you to another level - if you only ever own one 70s album this the one you should have - it's blinding !!
