I wonder what became of these ladies who were tipped for big things on the Miami club scene in 1966. I guess they failed to hook up with any record label type guys, went home & settled down to family life.

Local singer Perk Badger progressed from gospel to cutting soul sides .........

Boba, Would that set of Vashionettes down from Chicago (see link in Post 7) have any connection to the "Mighty Good Lover" singers? (many times dancers in clubs would progress to being singers as they then got more gigs).

More good acts on locally .......... Jerry Williams had relocated to Miami by this time.

Two fine singing ladies perform in the 'Knight Beat' room at the Sir John Hotel (with Chuck Jackson, Marv Johnson & Jerry Butler to follow shortly afterwards) ........

James Brown (plus Nat Kendricks) back in Miami ... to cash in on the success of "Mashed Potatoes".

Another act down from Detroit to play a Miami club .... with singers from New York & Chicago to follow.

Copy writers at newspapers had no idea (usually) who & what they were composing words / ads about. Because of this, spelling mistakes (& worse) were very common. This can make searching (on line) for info on someone more difficult & can fail to turn up all related items. Searching for "Spyder Turner" would have failed to unearth this ad.

WMBM radio DJ King Coleman. He provided the vocals on the 45 "(Do the) Mashed Potatoes" by Nat Kendricks & the Swans.

The Steinways 2nd Oliver 45 on a local radio station chart in 1966.

The more interesting photo is of the Vashionettes down from Chicago to dance at a local club. I guess this outfit has to be the same one that cut for Checker a while later.

They were quite popular down in Miami and so were regular visitors. Coz of this they built up good contacts with local radio DJ's and this resulted in the Steinways 45's getting good radio airplay in the Miami area in 1966.

Frank Williams & the Rocketeers (Little Beaver started out with this outfit). Most of these pictures are lifted from club ads placed in the newspaper, so the quality of them is much reduced from the acts PR / publicity photos.

Other items to be found in old editions of the Miami Times ....

Loads of music fans have spent 100's of hours viewing old editions of Billboard mag online & downloading articles, record reviews, ads for new releases from down the years ........ well you can spend (waste?) additional time viewing old editions of the Miami Times newspaper online via the University of Florida web site. It takes patience to find soul related stuff but there is loads of it on there if you keep searching. Here's another ad for a show at the New Parisian Club (see Twans thread for earlier post of show here) ....

BTW, the tale about the Twans being the Swans (of Nat Kendrick and the Swans fame) isn't correct in anyway. Nat Kendrick and the Swans were really James Brown & his band with lead vocal duties (shouts, etc) substituted by local Miami radio DJ King Coleman to prevent JB being sued by King Records. No actual band by the name of Nat Kendrick and the Swans existed though King Coleman did gigs fronting some musicians under that name (& further 45's were issued down in Florida under the same band name).

That picture of the Twans was taken from a club ad in the Miami Times that dates from 1966. You can access loads of old editions of the Miami Times via the University of Florida web site. WARNING .... its as addictive (& time consuming) trawling that site as the Billboard site is on Google books.

Do you mean a picture of the actual group ?? If so ........
