Hi Russ,
As the original DJ there along with Russ W, I can assure you none of the above would have worked.
There's a handful that would have done the business..Joe Jama and Bill Bush spring to mind, but the receptive audience had so much to choose from and, don't forget the playlist
was short. We might only play 100 records a night due to 2,3 and 4 plays a night.
Wigan was unique in it's make-up. Today we are older, wiser and willing to accept different styles.
If the Seven Souls and Silhouettes failed to entice at Station Rd, I can assure you the Mello Souls would have failed.
In my humblest opinion of course!
Kev
Seen to reall you and me having this discussion before Kev. Still think the Mello Souls would have made it, maybe not in 1973/74 but towards the end ('79/'80) if RS had got hold of this I still think it would have gone down taken the roof off
Two more from Butch that I thnk would have gone down well, Shirley Turner (Ann Robinson) World of Happiness and Jesse James Love Is Alright. Diane Lewis - Ain't Got A Chance Too. All in my opinion of course.

John Vincent and Richard Searling both owned the record while the Casino was open, but I don't know if it was actually played. Searling is rumoured to have offloaded the disc claiming it was "too good" for the NS scene of the time.
John Vincent told me that he offered it to Richard S and it was turned down with the "too good for the northern scene" comment you mention. Not sure if it was after Wigan closed or at the tail end when offered to Richard. Great record!!

But what about Lifeline Sarahleen. Large venue with a big - full dancefloor. Puts the theory that events other than Nostalgia ones are small on its tush.
Do like your idea of fitting tunes other than the usual 200 or so into a nostalgia night - but would it work? Or would the DJ, as some have posted on here before, have a mob of angries shouting get this rare sH17e off. Amazing how they can tell its rare by the sound
Bang on about Lifeline pal
Maybe all promoters should insist that DJ's play 4 or 5 records from left field just to spice things up a bit

At the end of the day paul, its just a bit of fun, it breaks the night up i know ur passionate about the scene, i personally think she had the guts to do it, i noticed on the handstands, she kept on pulling her skirt down, i was one of the judges that night it shouldve been liam imo only, thats all history now take care.
Billy
Personally Billy I think they spoil the night these days. I witnessed the same one Wicksy did and the best dancers sat it out.
To get on in a dance comp it seems you have to either look wierd or throw themselves about for the whole duration neither in time to the beat and totally lacking decent footwork. Like Rob said the choice of tracks for dnace competitions doesn't give those with decent footwork the chance to shine, the choice of tracks certainly needs looking at and the judges should be looking for the dancers first an formost not the acrobats....don't get me wrong I love to see the floor tricks but it has to fit in with the track, in the breaks etc not for the whole track.

I think it disappeared up there long ago personally, too much conflict, too much opinion, too much retro, nostalgia bollocks which rules the roost on today's scene, in certain areas it's turned into nothing more than a middle age fancy dress party, baggie pants, stupid hats, circular skirts and all the other naff nonsense has turned the scene into what we were all so worried that it could become, the music has almost become a watered down backing track to this retro scene that masquerades it's self as a rare soul scene in some areas and it sucks it really does, it's very sad but not a suprise, I'll take the tuneage over and above all else, I certainly don't feel the need to join this fancy dress party which basically has nothing to do with the Northern scene I grew up with which was to enjoy, collect, play and celebrate quality hard to find, authentic obscure Black American music.
Regards - Mark Bicknell.
I gotta agree with all you say about the fancy dress Mark. Was at a do other day and on the dancefloor there was some ridiculous looking outfits, seems that is the criteria to get into the top three of a dance comp as well cause certainly couldn't dance. Those doing the floor tricks don't even do it in time to the music, just throw themselves about with little grace and style.
Does little IMO to encourage youngsters onto the scene.

The soulie's that want to listen to something different are attending smaller venues, which are generally badly attended. The way forward may be to do what some oldie's nights are doing at the moment, which is to have a smaller room playing underplayed/rare/x over etc within the same venue such as Bentinck,Riley Smith Hall etc.
Lifeline isn't a smaller venue
The way forward is for promoters to program dj's who can play a well balanced set, that flows that also includes a certain percentage of underplyed, semi/unknown tracks, there are plenty that are good enough and are cracking dancers but are disregarded in the name of safety first attitude. A Dj who seems to get on these days is one who waves a blank cheque at records, not one who uses his or her imagination.
And I see so many plugs for venues that claim to be underplayed etc but often fail to deliver when I've either been or seen playlists.

Why on earth is it depressing chorleysoul? Bidds Nighter is on the 17th of October and Maxims Nighter is on 21st of November so its not all doom and gloom :-)
you forgot to mention the best upfront all-nighter (not just my opinion either
)Simon, Lifeline October 31st. The only other nighter with a likeminded ploicy that makes me want to go without driving for over 3 hoursis the Wilton (oh and Bidds when I can).
I agree with many ofyour points, the scene has been a failing scene musically by and largefor years. It gets more and more retro every year. Many people spouton about how they want something different but you never see them whensomething is promoted for them, even local to them!

A DJ is there to let those who booked at taxi know it's turned up at end of night
A Dj's job is there to entertain and educate (otherwise there is no point going out) but the balance has to be right according to the venue and the policy. But there a too few promoters these days who are prepared to stray from the norm and get DJ's who are prepared to educate with a few unknowns/semi-unknowns, which is a pity.
