  1. Maybe we do maths differently in the South as well Pete Taff
  2. Absolutely cracking reply from the Soul Police Statistical Department. Pete, have a count again of the people who have posted on this thread, then count those who have either said they like or are neutral (11 or so by my reckoning) - I think you will find that you are totally wrong, but hey, when did that ever matter in a good argument Taff
  3. Hey John how unusual, we disagree yet again Have you anymore current "hates" so I can have a listen with some guarantee of liking them Taff
  4. Suppose not Paul, I've been under suspicion ever since that first time, many years ago, when I suggested a totally random June break at a certain Cleethorpes caravan site Taff
  5. It's often mentioned on here how the oddest chance occurances result in memorable soulful occasions, here's another ! Having bailed out of the damp & dismal uk for a fix of spanish sun and sangria 2 weeks ago, there were no expectations or plans of things soul - the price that had to be paid for some warming rays. Day 3 arrives & bored witless in a small (but admittedly, sun-drenched) spanish town with the choice of ear-rupturing Baelaric beats or Dancing Queen and Mama Mia as evening entertainment, the following leapt out of a page of a Spanish Paper (I wasn't having much luck with the crossword and couldn't make head nor tail of my horoscope !) ; El Palau de Altea acoge hoy la actuaci³n de Betty LaVette, la voz del soul americano I still don't understand what the whole sentence means and no time or location was given, but next thing is that we're tearing along in the hired jalopy to a town called Altea, about 20 miles from where we were staying, by some fluke found a venue called El Palau and enquired as to the possibility of the said Ms Lavette appearing there, some time soon. After lots of si si, squinting and ques and pointing at watches, it became apparent that Bettye was indeed on........ in exactly 5 minutos and si there were plenty of tickets available. Time only to neck a quick san miguel and we were ushered in, to be treated to a fantastic show with Bettye giving it large on her current and 60's songs backed by a brilliant band, with us sat a few rows from the stage. In short, Magic Result........or so I thought, feeling extremely pleased with myself........until the subsequent inquisition...........so let's get this right, you brought us to spain without having any clue that Bettye Lavette (who we saw in London last year) was going to be on..........drove 20 miles straight to a venue you had never heard of, and 5 minutes later...........she's on stage, YES, that's exactly how it happened, see there was this spanish newspaper thing and I couldn't do the crossword and........ This is not working for you is it my dearest ? If it was trial by Jury, I'd be a gonner.........great night, truly totally unplanned, but I'm still getting the old fashioned looks that tell me someone thinks differently ! Taff the Innocent
  6. That Icmeler is clearly a place to avoid ! Bout 7 years ago, walking down the main drag which was lined with total pain in the arse. non stop "come in my bar, is best and cheapest in Turkey" hawkers. Having decided we'd had enough of the harrassment we decided we'd give the main drag a swerve and head off to quieter parts for a glug. Just then one of them decides to have one last go, racing across the road .................... "Hey Tommy, Hey Tommy u want drink, Hey Tommy come in my bar is best, Tommy you come have drink in my bar and I play soul music for you"...........Eh wtf ! Turning round to try and understand how this mystic Turkish git had worked that bit out, I was greeted by a guffawing Ion, last seen at the 100 Club a fortnight before, cue retire to bar for a few bevvies and talks of things soul. Must admit tho, he did (and still does) look the part ! Taff
  7. Yep, Soul @ The Ship in Leigh has a very friendly crowd despite their heretical devotion to the devil's musak . I also hear that there is a Soulful R&B / Modern Soul event at Ashwells Country Club, Brentwood, this Saturday 26th April, 2pm to 2am with live appearances from Nicole Jane and Nathan Watson who I am sure are renowned virtuosos of their genre. Contact number for this one is,07775 835901. The link below may give more info. https://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fusea...iendid=55893960 If all that fails, I'm told a certain shed at the bottom of a garden in South Woodham is a Modern Soul shrine on the occassions when Mr Stubbs lets it all hang out Taff
  8. Jackie lee & Delores Hall - Whether or Not Gail Anderson - Be so Proud Marie Knight - That's No Way to treat a girl Taff the dyslexic
  9. That does make sense having now also seen the ad on their web site for Prestatyn Motown Legends in April. The "branding" of the event under the Midnight Hour badge, long associated with the Northern & Motown events is what led me to believe it was the same event that I have attended previously. I'm just a confused customer ! The midnight hour crew are delighted to welcome William Hicks' Soul Satisfaction to the Motown Legend's weekend! Non-stop music all weekend! Fri 18th Apr - Fri 25th Apr 2008 Quote Offer Code 'IPML' Prices from £34pp BOOK NOW! Then you hit the book now tab..................... PRESTATYN SANDS - Self Catering DateNightsBreak TypePrices FromSavingQuote Code Fri, 10th October 08, 3 nights Motown Legends £34 per Person---IPML April 18th, 25th ? October 10th ? I'll have a scoop of whatever they're on ! Taff
  10. Just had the research department on this one........ It may be a totally different format to the 3 previous Motown Legends events I've attended, don't know how well the scans come out but "2 Traditional Northern Soul All Nighters and an All Dayer" seems pretty specific marketing to me. I hope they don't inadvertently cut and paste that lot or they may end up appealing to the people they aint apparently targetting The original point I was trying to make, was that in a limited "niche" market, to deny your previous customers the opportunity to give you their money again, is dim. Together with others who I know attended and enjoyed the (very Northern Soul focussed) Motown Weekends, we'll opt for Cleethorpes if we have to choose - hence the no brainer tag. Again, just think at best it's dim and Everton got beat so I've got the hump. Nother memo to self, get that cheque to Ady double pronto coz if we don't get in at Cleethorpes looks like we'll be a rockin and a rollin ! Bee bop a lula............................ Taff
  11. Surely ? So it won't be promoted heavily at the forthcoming Prestatyn event then, OK. Taff
  12. Perhaps...... Just seems dim at best. Would they not be better served by giving those that enjoy northern soul and Motown the opportunity to attend ? Taff
  13. Finger on the pulse again Pontins !!! Erm isn't there a slightly better etablished, must do weekender happening around that time ? The midnight hour crew are delighted to welcome you to the Motown Legends weekend. Non stop music all weekend. This is one you can't miss out on! Fri 6th June - Mon 9th June 2008. Prices from £50 per person Quote Offer Code 'IML6' BOOK NOW! This is perhaps one I can miss out on. Memo to self, get cheque to Ady pronto. Taff

  16. Went back and watched the very end of the movie (fell into a near death, trance the first time) up come scenes of the Casino and the usual dancing and backdrop sequences. Absolutely sod all to do with the plot if ever there was one in the first place. Then as the credits roll they reach the music advisor / consultant, whatever bit..........Kev Roberts, ahh mystery solved methinks. I think this film highlights the massive potential for far better marketing and awareness of our music by association with similar products of high repute or artistic merit. The Fred West story, is another feel-good britcom / romcom film just crying out for a Northern soundtrack. I reckon Northern Haemorrhoid Cream, would be a winner as well. "When your ring is just too itchy, reach for Northern, the Cream that brings smiles to your piles" (9 out of 10 DJs recommend it? cue pictures of 9 smiling Northern jocks and one with a strange pained expression) With prime time telly adverts backed by Northern jingles, we'll have sold out signs at venues all over the country. .......I'm going back to my Mail on Sunday before this turns into a rant. Taff
  17. Same here, I had no idea what it was when I got it.... amazed when the first track kicked in and thought this could be brilliant, then slowly as more and more classic northern played against a backdrop (unintentional that one) of dire acting, script, dialogue, unfunny "humour" and dire anything else that goes into making a film - just embarrassment that our music has been tacked on to such an appallingly bad movie for no apparent reason. The censor should have banned it for gratituous use of Northern or they could have used a Modern Soul and Northern Funk soundtrack which would seem appropriate ! Pete, before you watch, make absolutely sure you have nothing else remotely useful you could be doing with your life. It really is that bad. Taff
  18. It would seem I'm not alone in thinking this film stinks, despite the soundtrack, not a good association methinks. Line taken from Orange Film Review. "it is equally true that the soundtrack is packed with stone cold classic Northern Soul tunes. But on every other conceivable level, watching this film is like having to eat a cotton wool, tin foil and gravel sandwich." Hmm not good then ! Link for full review Orange Film Review Taff
