An interesting thing is this Zed1....I travel the country in all guises and vehidles. I meet 'the people' and hear their understanding of life. In my say 30 years of 'travelling' daily....I would say that Wigan is still known for Northern...than anything else! Well...I shoulda plugged 'the man'...Alfie Fleming! I came across his son selling his Dads record collection about 12 years ago based in Detroit. He was into hip-hop...crack and in essence a waster. He told me his dad had been a DJ throughout the late 50's/60's and quit in '70! He had died in '98 and eventually his entire DJ collection ended up with his son. I bought the whole lot......on a 'feeling'. The list the lad had prepared of around 100...of the 450 tunes....was AWESOME! When they arrived....they all had his Dads 'stamp'...A.C.FLEMING proudly placed on every tune! There wasn't 1 Motown tune.....every record tho' was an 'obscure' 60's....SOUL tune....every flippin' 1!!! Ended up with over 40 tunes featured in the top 500 Northern! After spinning them all I kept about 150....and sold the rest on Ebay or swapped them and indeed gave some away.......yours being a 'nugget' I recall!!!x But....what's the point in keeping em if they ain't gonna get spun....sez I! I have currently about 600 out and out Northern. I still take me plastic tool box for DJing which holds 100 tunes and a Sooty puppet in the front!.....and mic.....! I used to DJ 3 gigs in a night on occasion and never played the same tune twice and still 'had it away'....so where does one 'stop'?! Alfie brought me to my senses in 2002! His collection put together when it was 'happening'....said all to me....and i;ve focused on getting a top 500....that would make my 'tool box' if I was blindfolded! He collected some Soul albums in the mid to late 60's...and then progressed into being an acid freak....as many did! So his collection went that way! Yesterday we sold Jimi Hendrix 'Are You Experienced'...MINT...and several other 'classics' of that genre....and raised £650 for his cause...! Originally he came to me and asked for £100...for the lot!!!! I said nope...we'll do it together. After the instant sale success with his hippy gear....he said I can have all the Soul LP.s.....as a 'thank you'!!! However....as i've said I don't collect...or play LP's.....so they....along with me doubles/surplus 7"....are going!!! I have looked at the Record Collector 2012...and Ebay....and the majority of the LPs are around £10-30....but....I want them to go to folk who appreciate them....not want to sell them! The money raised will go to Olivia's wedding. I've done her school prom....seen her grow up and stuff and wellll.....u know!x If it's valued/worth say £20....then i'm happy to take £10 including delivery...on condition you are gonna keep it and play it! The Velvettes doing a Supremes hit and all kinda things...half a dozen came out over a year! Sent to me 'anonymously' too!!! I played them at doo's....but nobody believed me that they were who I said/thought they were!!hehe!x I'll admit this....for the first time in 'public'!x I believe Emporer Of My Baby's Heart...Kurt Harris became 'big' again...or for the first time in the mid 90's. I luv'd the record and was pleased to hear it around the Country. I had a copy of Dee Clark's That's My Girl'...and was taking it National wherever I went at the time too. Obviously I had become interested in anything Dee Clark as a consequence! I found this....at a Boot Sale around '96... I think Raindrops is the A side...and the above 'STOOORMER'..the B! When first playing it...I couldn't believe the 'speed' at which it was recorded......mad stuff...imagine the drummer and accompaniment?! Either heavy heavy drugs at play....or...trickery with the speed when 'pressing' the tune! So...I slowed it to 33....then increased it to about 38 rpm......and was astonished! I put a 'white label' over the B side......and took it to the 100club a week or so later. I spun it as 'Emperor Of My Baby' s Heart....PART 2' and called it 'Till the End Of Time'.........and folk danced.........!!! ...it's called 'Sootification' in local legal circles around my way Godzilla!!!x I've managed to cut out years of bureaucracy and bo**ox that Insurance companys have slung our way when chasing them for compensation for peedo victims around the land whilst abused in kids homes. For 6 years these shi*ters had used bits of paper and waffle to get nowhere. It took me 6 months 'Sootification'....by emailng 1,000 Councillors/dignatories etc with the sordid detail and cover uppers they had among their ranks..said in my lingo. Freedom of speech it's called....electronic type. They sh*t themselves and paid £4 million that time....within 4 weeks of me 'Sootification'. Since then over 500 folk have received similar 'support' where required and it's cost Insurance companys in excess of £7 mill......in 7 years to date. We got 4 new cases just come in. The Wales/Jersey exposure are on our radar too. Saviles lot and other 'celebs'...well...it's open season....honest!!! So....I have many more forums/official websites where my 'serious' chat will go....in 'ere....it's 'chill out'!!x. It's 'educated' many Execs in International businesses as to 'the real world'....the one that I deal with. Remember the Duke of Argyle Len? If I recall correctly....the City Stop Soul night was rammed every month...and we stuck mainly to obvious' tunes so to speak....party night! Very successful....but....a minority of 'hard core' wanted to hear summink different too! So...i set up this little dark dingy venue...The Duke of Argyle...above a pub....and it held about 30 people!!! EVERYTHING played there was obscure...rare....or at the time unknown as such! Shifty's tunes/Kev Featherstone...and Rob came over with some funky gear too! Did you do a spot there?? Many did! Awesome nights and horses for courses satisfied...in 1 town...job done! To be honest...at that time...we probably couldn;t have filled a 100 folk venue for such....! The City Stop party got 150+ everytime...every month! You are right tho'...if there is too much choice....then some venues will suffer. Do you leave that to market forces...customer demand....or reduce whats on offer.....? Always has been a toughie....and the latter needs huuuuge co-operation between folk. I remember us '9Clubs' Soul Club....used to liase all nights between us as best possible. We had a comradeship that the scene suggests should be 'normal'. In reality...it ain't like that! I got a new tune arrive today via the mail as opposed to a car boot! I was in Majorca on business and me mate listens to all kinda lingo channels...i like hearing the difference in dialect....but ain;t a clue as they talk too fast!!hehe!x Anyway....I was flippin through channels....and this tune was trucking along......so I listened...and was bowled over by the 'Motown' sound....!!! Neever heard of it....or them....and the DJ went on one and so we din;t have a clue who it was! That was 7 months ago....and last week....I heard it again....on a Spanish girls MP3 player!!!! I stopped her....and asked her in broken English.....who it was! She told me....and here it is....fresh outta the bag! They've done loads of tracks....but this seems to be less known by them! The most 'awesome' response i had to any instrumental was when I played Cal Tjaders-Soul Sauce...at Blackburn and the 100Club! Dealers...collectors and dancers came up asking what it was....after dancing to it!!hehe!x Another tune that got folks attention mainly at Soul nights was this version by Red Beans and Rice...1980...! I was driving down to London...flippin through the radio channels..and an obscure station came on and this tune was playing....June 1980....I remember it well! I came home and on the Saturday went to our last proper record shop and 'ordered;' it from the bit of ripped paper i'd wrote it on! It came! I had it in my box until 1994 when I started to spin it at my Soul Nights in Cambridge...! To date...personally...I have never found anyone who knew owt about it....BUT....I just found this 1 link on youtube...and i looked at the comments and it is very interesting indeed! The guy who plays the Sax in the band apparently went on to feature in Jules Hollands Millionaire Band....whom I've looked after in me time...but never knew!!!!!
