  6. Jazz FM’s “The Story of UK Soul” Nominated For TRIC Award Had the below sent in, listening along with voting details (if of interest) follow below ... Jazz FM’s “The Story of UK Soul” has been nominated for a coveted TRIC Award in the public vote ‘Factual’ category. The 8-part landmark series, presented by Simon Phillips and produced in house, told the story of UK Soul from the 1960s to the present day covering Northern Soul, Lovers Rock, Acid Jazz and the Nu Soul sound of today. The Story of UK Soul is a time capsule of the evolution of UK Soul featuring surprising stories, unique perspectives and never-before-heard anecdotes from the likes of Beverley Knight, Mica Paris, Courtney Pine, Emeli Sande, Omar, Chris Amoo, Jean-Paul “Bluey” Manick, Billy Ocean and Carl McIntosh. The series also celebrated those instrumental in making the genre a success, including the legendary DJs Colin Curtis, Greg Wilson and Trevor Nelson, alongside record company owners and producers including Don-E and Eddie Piller. In addition, the series metaphorically toured the country, acknowledging the contribution that performers have made across the United Kingdom, from Edinburgh to Rochdale and Wolverhampton, alongside the more recognised locations of Wigan and London. The Story of UK Soul is nominated alongside TV shows such as “Drive To Survive” (Netflix), “Beckham” (Netflix) and “Mr Bates v The Post Office” (ITV). 9. Event: In The Spirit Of The Uni - 8 Ball Poole Soul Review: 5 stars by Dave Morris. Event Date: 11 May 2024 Our numbers were slightly lower than our first night but expected with other events happening. I would like to thank Matt for driving down from Trowbridge. He was always a great supporter of the Uni soul nights. A big thank you to the other residents Stuart Ross & Steve Malpass for sticking with the ethos of what were trying to achieve. We are looking to play something different from the same old stuff that can be heard at other venues in the area. ... Tap to view the full event review
  10. Event: In The Spirit Of The Uni - 8 Ball Poole Soul Review: 4 stars by Allchilledout. Event Date: 11 May 2024 The second spirit of the uni again offered me the chance to hear something different. To this it did not disappoint,I heard music that was new to my ears,or had forgotten. Tunes that are underplayed or just released. Even listened to stuff I didnt like but thats allowed and has always happened on the scene. The three residents were well supported by the excellent guest Matt from Trowbridge. So if youve got an open mind do give this event a go. Tap to view the full event review

  12. Event: In The Spirit Of The Uni - 8 Ball Poole Soul Review: 5 stars by Matt. Event Date: 11 May 2024 Many thanks for inviting me to spin some tunes, I really enjoyed the evening from start to finish. It was great to meet up with old friends and new and it brought me back to the many great nights we used to have at the Bournemouth University. I liked what Dave, Stuart & Steve are trying to do at the club, by playing underplayed tunes with some oldies also. Poole has always been a great area for soul and the knowledge of the soul fraternity is very h... Tap to view the full event review
  13. Event: Hemel Sos All Dayer Tony Clarke Jordan Wilson Review: 5 stars by Mod Life Crisis. Event Date: 11 May 2024 So, a new venue for a well-established Club. It’s in a village hall, with a large parking lot outside. Once we battled our way through the gang of feral youths hanging outside, we entered a decent sized hall. Plenty of tables n chairs, good size dance floor and the decks raised up on a stage at the end nearest the door. Bar area in a separate room - basic offering, prices ok. Was also a dodgy Welsh bird offering free cake and biscuits to all and sundr... Tap to view the full event review

  21. Staples Jr Singers Announce First New Album In Nearly 50 Years View full article
  22. Staples Jr. Singers Announce First New Album In Nearly 50 Years, Searching, Out June 14th via Luaka Bop Info This is a record that the Staples Jr. Singers started to make in the 1980s but never finished, and then lost the tapes. And while we didn’t try to make a record with them like it would have been made in the eighties, we did try to make a record with them that referenced another time—the way their music does. In the end, all it took was recording everybody in the same room, at the same time. Can you believe almost nobody does that anymore? For those of you who need a primer on the Staples Jrs. (no relation to that other band you’re thinking of): They are the Browns, a family of ten who came of age in the ’60s in a small rural town called Aberdeen, in northeast Mississippi between the black prairie and the pines. Back then, the South was desegregated on paper but not always in practice. Their parents found refuge and support in the church against the backdrop of an unwelcoming town (and nation), while the kids found refuge and a greater purpose in life in the music. Every weekend, when everyone was off from work, the family would pile into their van and travel across the Bible Belt to gospel programs and talent shows in the region. Excited audiences would flock to them afterwards, telling them, “Y’all sound like the Staple Singers, y’all should call yourselves the little Staple Jr. Singers!” And so they did. Release notes After the worldwide success of their 1975 album "When Do We Get Paid," reissued in 2022, The Staples Jr Singers — the family gospel trio of siblings Edward Brown, R.C. Brown, and Annie Brown Caldwell — are set to release their first album in nearly 50 years, titled "Searching" via Luaka Bop. The Singers recorded Searching live over two evenings in October 2023 from a single-room church in West Point, Mississippi called The Message Center. Produced by Ahmed Gallab, who performs as the artist Sinkane, and engineered by Albert Di Fiore, the siblings—Edward, R.C., and Annie, alongside their rhythm section (R.C’s son Gary, his grandson Jaylin, and Edward’s son Troy)—sat in a semicircle, some even on pews, playing their music in a room as it was meant to be played. “The process was very easy,” said Gallab. “There’s nothing like a family bond/band. It was so special to watch how locked into each other everyone was. You can hear and feel that on this record. Their remarkable journey shines through on the album, showcasing a captivating set of gospel, blues, and soul. In June/July they’ll return to Europe for a tour that includes headline shows in Manchester & London and Paris on a double bill with Gregory Porter. Searching Tracklist 1.
