  1. The Casino must have had wide doors... The various sections on the bbc6 show were about the venue and the records....The Casino bit was all about RW
  2. So RW "discovered" " There's a ghost in my house". I'm sure many people in the UK like myself " discovered " it in the UK in 1968 via Motown Memories vol 2

  5. Leading up to HDH leaving Motown, it strikes me that the mid-late 1967 period of tracks produced, shows that Eddie Holland had, basically, gone on strike. He was pushing for a move, talking to rival companies. No new songs were being written. HDH were probably contractually obliged to produce product, so it looks like Brian Holland and Lamont Dozier had to re-hash old songs to cover this. Brian Holland and Lamont Dozier produced these covers in various artists from mid 1967 to the end of 1967. Of course Motown/HDH recorded covers of their songs virtually from Day 1, but there was new material being written...lyrics usually from Eddie. There seems to be a view that the "work to rule"" was led by Eddie, and perhaps Brian and Lamont were not so forceful or keen to push the issue. Eventually, of course, they followed suit. Helpless This Old Heart of mine Where did you go Just one last look Take me in your arms [[rock me a little while) I'll turn to stone...see above I like everything about you Come see about me Ask any girl Can I get a witness Heaven must have sent you There are probabally more...any views??
  6. Re Motown...Norman Whitfield , he re-tooled his songs a lot, spread around various artists. Unusually ,on this song he cut it twice on Gladys Knight..1966 ( Everybody needs love lp) and 1969 ( Nitty Gritty lp)....completely different arrangements. Also, according to DFTMC, Gladys' version was first...before The Temptations in 1967.
  7. Many thanks The Yank. Interesting....never knew about another "Originals"
  8. Hello, hope somebody can help me identify a cover version of The Temptations song "Ain't no sun since you've been gone" ( other versions of this tune include Gladys Knight, the Supremes, Chuck Jackson, Dusty Springfield, etc. This is a male version, group, quite a good stab at it I think. NOT the Dynamics,. Mid tempo item . On the old tape I had, it was given the name "Originals" but clearly isn't the Motown Originals. Thanks for any help

  10. Didn't know that Brown's had other venues until the previius post. Sounds like a similar experience.

  13. Julianb That makes sense, as the column refers to possible closure. So 12 December 1970 visit, closure late January 1971. I remember getting my B&S no. 50 and I recognised some of the people in the photos. Thank you
  14. Found the issue date..January 1971, which was a couple of weeks before closure. His visit was probably late 1970. That ties in with my memory of going there, but I'm not aware if he was there when I was . I probably would not have known if was the case
  15. Can somebody post the date of Godin's Wheel visit, and the date of B&S 50 please.?
  16. Could be an age thing. At the few NS events I attend, the tunes from the 70s always seem more popular. 60s classics followers are fast disappearing.
  17. Which is what I said above... A record never changes, only a person's viewpoint as to that record's reflection on their ever changing tastes and self image.
  18. Yes Mike...fantastic piece. Many thanks for that. I wasn't too aware of the other clubs associated with Brown's ownership. It seems they were larger events, with artists appearing. I never saw anybody at Moston. I recall it had a reputation for a bit of violence (probably reputation more than fact...I didn't see anything, apart from one fight)...and my parents used to frequent the Liberal Club over the road, so my early visits were "uncomfortable" to say the least. I'm glad that the Barn Dance wasn't just my imagination running away with . Perhaps the guys did join in, but at 14 I would be too shy. Took me a number of visits to gather up courage to take to the floor. Glad somebody recalled The Glories. I'll have a read of all that stuff...thanks again. Many
  19. Other big tunes played included: Feel so Bad Cool Jerk I'll do anything Sock it to 'em JB Who's making love Bring it on home to me Shake, Freedom train Funky Street (complete with crazy dance) Happy, & Don't tell your mama...fairly new releases You're not an ordinary girl, Going down for the third time, There's no stopping us now and more Motown And I now remember, half way through every session, the floor was cleared to enable all the girls (no guys) to take to the floor, and gather in a circle for a Barn Dance. The same 3 records were always played but I can only recall "Higher and Higher" , and "Give me my freedom (Glories). Can't recall the 3rd track.
  20. My first Discotheque , aged 14, was in 1969. The venue was Brown's Discotheque at the Ben Brierley, Moston, Manchester. (Actually it had been re-named Stop,Stop! by the time I started going. (I suppose that was some kind of Mancunian humour - "Stop, stop" as opposed to " A go-go" ). I presume most late 60s provincial discotheques played a mixture of Motown, Atlantic, Stax ( Club Soul) and pop chart stuff. However, at Brown's , the playlist was heavily influenced by the records filtering down from the Twisted Wheel. I'm not sure if the resident DJ ( Roy - local postman I think) was responsible for the record choices. I might be doing him a disservice, but I seem to think that some Wheel regulars were bringing in the sounds. On the playlist , heavily programmed were tracks such as : The Right Track, Harlem Shuffle, 7 days too long, Boogaloo party, Everybody's going to the love in, Let's copp a groove, Scratchy, Some kind of wonderful, Walking up a one way street, I spy for the FBI, Shake a tail feather, Help me, Can't satisfy, You've been cheating, Ride your Pony, Spooky's day off, Baby do the Philly dog, Mine Exclusively, Wade in the Water, Going to a Happening, and more. Rarer Motown ( B sides, choice A sides) were played too. Brown's closed about 1970 I think. By that time I was going into Manchester...several venues, (Top of the Town my favourite) and gradually got to hear rarer 45s , which led to visits to the Wheel. We were lucky to have several shops selling " USA Imports"...Spin Inn, Ralph's, Hime & Addison.... Great days.
  21. The Wheel closed in January 1971 I think.....quite a few years before the type of smooth productions as above. And things like "Hold back the night" and "Heaven must be missing an angel" were probably played at Rare soul venues before crossing over. When I went to The Wheel, as I recall, there was no "Title" attached to the type of club playing rare soul....it was a place that attracted you because they played "IMPORTS"...wow!!
