  1. I'm sorry to say that it seems to be true. I'm trying to get some information. Weldon was a client and a friend for many years, a unique character with a warm sense of humour. I'll miss him. Paul Mooney www.millbrand.com
  2. At 3pm there's a lecture on 'generational conflict' if that's what you mean? I'd have thought everyone on here would enjoy a bit of anthropology... we're indulging in it everytime we post an opinion.
  3. Wow, someone that can see into the future. You're wasted on here
  4. It's boring shite like this as to why the younger crowd aren't getting into Northern.....
  5. This sounds really interesting actually! I'll have to see if I can get the day off work. If I can't will you report back Ady?
  6. Yet another of the icons from our youth passes away. Never TRUELY appreciated IMHO. Gr8 career and longevity - wudda loved to see & hear the 2 old timers SB & Sam Moore duet????? RIP BIG MAN
  7. Absolutely unique voice and very underrated songwriter as well. "It Will Stand" from 1960(?) was The General's response to rock n roll being finished as E Cochran & B Holly died and Elvis was drafted - how right he was and thankfully so! RIP General NJ
  8. Excellent stuff! he sounds just soooo good, I'm not a fan of Johnny Cash but they seemed to bounce off each other on that duet, defo a xmas pressie for me! Lenny
  9. Although as time passes it is to be expected that we lose many of the voices that have been so important in our lives. On hearing the news last Saturday about the General I was deeply saddened and like that of Otis Redding and Edwin Starr the death was unexpected and came as a bolt out of the blue. We have lost many other giants of the music but so many in circumstances that cannot fully surprise us: drug or alcohol related (Marvin, David Ruffin etc); as a result of a long illness Levi or Jackie etc);or from health related issues (Barry White, Solomon Burke etc). Both Edwin and The General were still working hard in the business and exciting so many audiences. In the U.K. of course, Edwin's loss was particularly painful because of his residency in this country. We saw very little on these shores of General Johnson because of the success he continued to enjoy in his homeland. Although his repertoire could have satisfied any weekender audience he simply didn't need to resurrect a career as have so many of the artists that have been brought over in the past thirty years. As with so many others on here it was the release of GMJALMT that blew me away and led to an appreciation of General Johnson's voice. Despite owning the Action copy of 'You're Everything' and 'Our Love Will Grow' I hadn't linked Norman Johnson with Chairmen Of The Board. As a student in Bangor I leapt at the opportunity of booking The Chairmen Of The Board when their 1971 tour was announced and the Melody Maker of May 1st that year states quite clearly that the Bangor date would be their first in the U.K. Sadly the tour never took place but I remember the interest in tickets from as far afield as the Liverpool and Manchester areas. I did get to see the Chairmen in the mid seventies but sadly never had the opportunity to meet the great man himself. RIP Norman and thanks for the music that will live forever.
  10. Thanks everyone, the first week's sales are excellent.
  11. I've only heard four tracks so far ("Selfish One", "Half Of Love", "Turn Back The Hands Of Time" and "Love Makes A Woman") but I'm impressed. Mellow-D (...or Melody as she's now known) shows promise and she's at the right age. Syl is hoping to do a revue featuring Mellow-D next year. Paul
  12. Its been a bad week. Having suffered the loss of Solomon Burke and now this, words fail me. What a distinctive voice and unique talent, sadly missed Thank you Dave
  13. Thats a real shame it didnt work out Ian........ best, Ivor
  14. Unbelievable............whats really sad is that no one thought it viable to bring over Chairmen Of The Board as a live act to any of the larger events over here......Id love to have seen them........Its not much fun being a Soul Fan at the moment what with Solomon Burke as well the other day.... RIP General.
  15. Love the record my all time fave General track awesome vocals.Should be played tonight at Prestatnyn R.I.P.The General........
  16. This one has really got me ...... Chairman of the Board were a huge part of my formative years. The Showmen, I learned about retrospectively & really added to the excitement of discovering a whole world of soul music I had no idea existed in the early 70s. Bless Your Heart (General) (Chairman) Norman Johnson. May 23, 1943 - October 13, 2010
  17. That band up there in the All Nighter in the sky continues to grow! R.I.P.General --thanks for the music you left us. T.C
  18. RIP . Thank you for the music . Malc
  19. Very sad. Listen to his "Wrong Girl" from, I think, 1964. Fabulous track
  20. Great record Scott, despite what cynics say about it Lenny
  21. Some singers you think will be here forever....Norman Johnson was, for me, one of THE voices of the early 70's. Probably never really accepted as a 'legend'...but a truly unique voice. Still very active on the Beach scene in the U.S. Solomon Burke I expected...due to his size and health,...but this has hit me for six! Such a loss.....
