  1. Seasons Greetings to all Derek
  2. Given that the only "Northern Soul" records are these tailor made efforts. None of the 60's & 70's tunes co-opted onto the scene were made as "Northern Soul".
  3. I've been fortunate to recieve an advance copy of this wonderful piece of work. I've all ready had hours of fascinating reading and replaying of records from the music liibrary. A fantastic piece of work and delightfully presnted in colour.
  4. This release from Nick Corbin is excellent- a real highlight in contemporary soul. Quality melodies and production. Nice harmonies on 'Time Alone' especially.'
  5. I do agree Owd Roger but unfortunately a pioneer to one person is often an irritant to someone else. We live in an age when the truth is often obscured because it doesn't fit what many want to believe. There are now dozens of memoirs about northern soul and indeed other genres of soul. A number are excellent and a number are dismal but having read a few they do not express a uniformity on what happened and how it happened. I avoided any direct criticism of individuals when I posted. I was a tad frustrated by the overall negativity but also I'm not qualified to comment as I don't know enough about how the scene was back in the day. There are some esteemed contributors to this site whose knowledge continues to impress me and it's to them I give way. To avoid being totally anodyne in my criticism about the programme I'll express the layman's opinion that RW was the weak link. Thoroughly enjoyed the musical content though.
  6. The BBC play ten hours straight of music from the golden years of the NS scene and still it’s not enough for some people who prefer to concentrate on negative comments. It’s obvious there is no definitive’right’ or ‘wrong’ about the history of the scene. It’s open to interpretation and fifty years on memories are set and for many unyielding. I stayed awake most of the night listening to BBC six music and thoroughly enjoyed the music. The guest DJs were a nice idea that was only partially a success. The music was a total success. Well done the BBC.
  7. Am surprised anyone took a chance on this after the Nurons ongoing fiasco. Found a printer for your newest tome yet Steve Derek
  8. Picked up an original 12" for a tenner this week. Og cheaper than a reissue go figure.
  9. Four years old now but this is one download I transferred to a CDr. Actually approached a couple of reissue companies but just got polite refusals. 'Sweet Tangerine' was the killer cut.
  10. This has a nice jazzy vibe. I agree with Roburt about downloads. The emotional attachment just isn't there for most of them. I still buy a few I like as I hope that eventually a physical release will happen - most recent example of which is Acanthe Lang who finally has a whole album release.
  11. Asked Kitch he said will go up tomorrow between 5-6 .
  12. Who is going to be stocking this 45 in the UK?
  13. Bobby Jonz RIP - I missed his passing. I had this on a tape of a Greg Vincent show from some forty years.
  14. I converted many of my cassettes to cdrs a few years back and gave the remainder away. Quite a few of them were used by a mate’s son as samples for beats at the studio where he worked. Good to see the music therein used positively. I’m unlikely to buy a cassette again but then I’m not the market.
  15. Grooms- ‘I deserve a little bit more’ is a fine harmony soul labour. The ballads are the pick of the compilation imo.

  17. One of the greats of popular music. As a songwriter unsurpassable and let's hope that the accolades reflect his immense talent.. I actually met him in a village pub in Surrey back in the 80s. He was humble and polite. As a singer and performer he was under rated. What a record 'Why Can't We Be Lovers' is. Lamont Dozier R.I.P.
  18. Thanks to your post Autumnstoned I just realised that there is another version of this by Linda Laine (not That one) and The Sinners using a different title. Dusty's is better but this version is good.
  19. I've got this one. Very superior double sider.' Don't follow me' has a great hook from the pen of Nick Corbin. Likely to become sought after in a few months, I reckon.
  20. This link between soul and the Vietnam War has musically been mined for probably twenty years since Greg Burgess' pioneering articles in 'In The Basement' & 'Record Collector' in 2001/2 so I do wonder if this third collection from ACE is a bit 'out of time'. For those that are interested Justin Brummer comprehensive and rather splendid Vietnam War: Soul, Gospel, & Funk Records website is still available and growing at: https://rateyourmusic.com/list/JBrummer/vietnam-war-soul-gospel-and-funk-records/
  21. Highly recommended. Two huge tunes from a big voiced singer formerly in New Street Adventure. My copy also dropped this morning.
