Papa And The Uptopias Cry For Joy The fastest growth genre within the UK with rare-soul collecting at the moment seems to be "Sweet Soul Harmony".A long standing demand has always been enjoyed in the USA and JAPAN. If your a long-term vocal-group-harmony fan or a Brit Soulie joining the in vogue sound, listen to this impossible Layayette Thomas project from San Francisco. After the novelty intro, droning brass opens the way for some soul-rap; and then this beautiful recordings rises Phoenixesque, gliding into Soul-Group harmony greatness with a precise blend of pained vocals that deliver something really special. an awesome example of the genre, rare in the extreme and in the type of condition the discerning collector dreams of. FLAWLESS! Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 88.00 Sophisticates I Can't Stand It C/w I Need You We will not linger long mentioning, the now well know dumping of the MUTTlabels remnants @ Bob Mayes emporium in Detroit. But we must draw your attention to this collectors piece that has for some inexplicable reason been just that for over 3 decades. The handful that entered the country in the early 80s seemed to have been diverted by the NSJock, do not pass go and get file in the collection. Today this 45 rarely comes to market, but we think you'll be shocked by the sheer class that lies in the grooves of this Motor City girl group masterpiece. BOTH sides just give it up BIG! The need for it's long overdue renaissance with Northern Soul will ignite it's potential into something to talk about. You can't argue with really great music - can you. Sorry, this item has already been won! Pearls Shooting High C/w Can I Call You Baby Herb Miller's work on this now iconic Indianapolis vehicle, spawned some of Soul's most-wanted, least-seen 45s. Just like his highly coveted work with The Vanguards, this serious rarity by The Pearls is another vocally slick delight that seamlessly cruises along on a wave of shrill girl-group chorus and a lead crooner of the highest calibre. With the bonus of a haunting-soul-ballad straight from the top-drawer on the flip, this 45 underscores Herbie Miller's obvious abilities. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 355.00 Daphine Williams I Love You Do you want to hear something extraordinary? Click the sound file and sink into a groove with no obvious comparables. WARNING. A clean & clear soulful vocal darts in and out of a trumpet and hammond arrangement littered with a subtle but shrill girl chorus, then a trumpet break of pure ecstasy! Stunningly gorgeous NS Crossover. Flip it over and it's the Boogaloo/Funk fans turn to get excited as Roosevelt attacks Brian Augers MOD classic "Black Cat" and again the trumpet & organ rule, but not completely as Roosevelt ups his vocal and rasps defiance and angst in liberal quantities. Major Harris Call Me Tomorrow I'm just reaching that stage of my life, where I'm finding my car keys in the fridge and a slab of butter in my coat pocket! But I'll never forget the Saturday afternoon when the Melton Mowbray &Stamford crew set off for the Blackpool Mecca in the comfort of a mattress laden Transit Van! Butch the driver had just received a sales cassette tape from Simon Soussan full of new discoveries! Lou Ragland was my instant favourite, quickly replaced by The Steinways but by the 5 hour mark Major Harris was the King of the C90. As if it was yesterday that haunting electric guitar intro, Major effortless vocal purring those simplistic lyrics... today it still has the same effect. Shiver inducing Northern Soul, in an irresistible format, pressed in durable heavy duty vinyl; as opposed to styrene. Gorgeous isn't it, but not as gorgeous as the memories it has left me and so many others members of the early 70s vest-brigade. Now, where did I put that Betamax remote control....? Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 199.00 Chris Clark Love's Gone Bad C/w Put Yourself In My Place Seekers of the clean, tidy and rare TMG's in their original jackets, here is another fine copy of one of those elusive little critters that continue to elude. 1966 non-hit shows Chris Clark in an angry mood as here "Love's Gone Bad" the flipside is her wonderful version of the Elgins & Isley Brothers timeless classic "Put Yourself In My Place". This gritty, grinding Rarest Of The Rare offers an expressive soulful vocal cradled by a finely tuned male vocal group (most likely The Sheppard Brothers) creating a Northern Soul platter of primitive greatness! Already enjoying a huge underground cult following with this copy just begging for the right DJ to give it that little bit more exposure it's own rarity has denied it so far. Chubby Checker You Just Don't Know (what You Do To Me) the vinyl WOW factor has just rushed through me! Unissued in the USA - UK Pye gave this 45 life in 1965 as a B-side, and ultimately selling virtually nothing on release. Those 60s Soul Pioneers turned market stall foragers, junk shop rummages, cut out bin flickers; playing both sides of anything and everything just hoping for a "sound" that could be the next "Soul Dance" discovery. This example is of course the very pinnacle of those teenage adrenaline fueled searches. In 2012 to encounter a copy in flawless totally unblemished condition is truly remarkable - act accordingly. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 562.00 Kareem Never Give Up On Love Reworking a favourite doesn't always hit the right note, but this sultry, sweet, slick and smooth adaption of Ronn Matlock's "I can't forget about you" is masterful in both production and fluency of performance. The effortless delivery of the exquisite vocal laid over the familiar melody is truly delicious. Classic sweeping strings, plaintive horns and sophisticated arrangement equals modern soul perfection. This white label promo offers several mixes, the soulful play being the Mike Patto produced Radio Mix. A downbeat 2 step anthem, guaranteed to give goose-bumps, this is also much in demand for the house edit. Released in 1997 on Exploding Plastic records, this highly collectible white label is rarely seen for sale as collectors keep it under lock & key. Rumour has it that eventual releases were all sold on a London market stall when the label went under. Courtesy of Ali The Guru. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 388.00 Blues And Soul Blues & Soul # 17 March 1969 One of the really elusive first 20. Front cover is Otis Redding not for the first time featured with a horse. This 1969 issue highlights for the Soul Historian the level of demand for re-issuing Soul rarities due to DJ generated demand. May alone saw near 20 45s. inc: Astors - Candy, Spellbinders - Help Me, Rex Garvin - JB, Darrell Banks - Open The Door To Your Heart etc. 1969 was truly the peak for British Soul fans - and all-night-club attendance John Abbey & Peter Trickey review new releases inc: Z. Z. Hill's UK only "Make Me yours" etc Artist pics & articles on: Joe Tex, Junior Walker & the All Stars. Curtis Mayfield, Ben E. King. Artist pictures of the Van Dykes, Esquires, Johnniie Taylor, Jean Stanback, Theresa Lindsey, Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin, Temptations, center page spread of Stevie Wonder, Joe Stubbs .. On top of all that info are the 1968 readers poll results for all categories. Out of all the early Blues & Soul I consider this the most interesting &informative, as always a wonder column from Dave Godin of course! Perhaps more inciting are the Record company adverts shimmering with retro images and design. Action, Island, Atlantic, Deep Soul, Chess & Tamla Motown all have eye-catching ads that are pure-pop-art! Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 154.00 Flamingos The Boogaloo Party Very RARE 1966 original first press UK Philips # BF1786 By early 1967 this disc was the most-wanted of all UK soul release 45s. Being released and deleted almost simultaneously. Leaving only the lucky few with a copy, quickly making it's way into the hands of all-nite club DJ's to rise up into a Twisted Wheel, Mojo, Nite Owl MONSTER! After all this is total 60s Soul dance music of the most vibrant kind, with demand rising to fever pitch, in 1969 Philips re-issued this classic on #BF1786 note this release # was kept the same throughout the 70s & 80s as Phonogram continually re-issued. Mr Manships Auction Results 9-5-2012
Chancellors All The Way From Heaven C/w Sad Avenue Why this sublime mid-60s New York vocal-group session has not hit the real-big ticket is a mystery. Freddie Perren's subtle arrangement cradles a sublime lead vocal, bolstered by an effective echo-chamber vocal-harmony-chorus. This records drips with all that is good with vocal-group Northern Soul; carefully constructed to maximize the vocal clarity woven into a harp and guitar mix that provides the irresistible dance-beat arrangement with Detroit style mini-instrumental breaks embroidered the full length of the song. SUPERB!! If that wasn't enough the flip side is 60s Sweet Soul Nirvana - a truly gorgeous stepper of the highest order. PS the smart ones amongst you will not have missed this offering is the stupidly rare PINK stock copy....in lovely clean condition. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 107.00 Erroll Dixon The Hoop Oh yes!! Street-level English SOUL from 1966. An intoxicating dancefloor experience, relentless thumping Northern Soul R&B, that from the first note to the very last, will leave you breathless. John Farrar played this recently at the "Copper Tops", Worcester. I myself spun it at the last 2 mighty "STUTE" happenings. The reaction was identical - it not only rammed the floor, it kept the floor going for the rest of the set. Absolutely compelling Northern Soul floor-shaker! with absolutely no USA release. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 148.00 Joey Dee And The New Starlighters How Can I Forget Vocal / Instrumental If you seriously collect Northern Soul classic original the chances are you don't own this one. There were of course total failures - this is one of those passed over releases that never sold a bean. The winning bid was £ 124.00 Isonics Sugar C/w 1967 Beverly Hills vocal group creation that has taken the Soul Clubs of the North by a storm. A group joins the spoken intro; which collides with a penetrating piano which runs the full coarse of the recording, prompting, interrupting and encouraging some totally wild vocal-group harmony vocals. Killer instrumental breaks, Piano & bongo fight for position with blaring girls, rolling-tongues and those of so insuppressible make vocals. Soul fuses with Latin to craft a awesome piece of Northern Soul - flip side is an overlooked Deep Soul delight. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 311.00 Zoot Money's Big Roll Band Big Time Operator Flamingo Club will remain in the history of the 60s British MOD culture for ever. This legendary haunt for the smoke's "The IN Crowd" gave birth to the reputations of Jimmy James & The Vagabonds, Geno Washington & His Ram Jam Band, Georgie Fame, Shotgun Express to name but a few. After talking to an original MOD recently he said his most memorable night was watching Zoot Money Big Band live @ Cheateux Impney, Droitwich he thought? Which was hardly surprising as this group not only had one crazy-rasping lead vocalist, but also boasted Baritione Sax,Piano, Hammond Organ, Bass, the usual guitars & drums driven by a defiant attitude. This single characterized everything a MOD wanted to be - "Big Time Operator" ultimately becoming an anthem, selling reasonably well on the back of portraying a current lifestyle. As this beautiful RED & WHITE DEMO it's speaks history, culture &collectability in just mammoth proportions. Sorry, this item has already been won! Killer tune that hardly anyone owns - so rare -so very very good. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 411.00 Fellows Let's Make It Last C/w She's Always There Forgive the pun but this really is "solid" Detroit; that has sat under the radar for decades suffering only from it's own rarity, as this disc gives up not one but two fabulous Motor City male-vocal-group Northern Soul dancers. Topside is an atmospheric George Clinton composition elevated by swirling strings and a signature LeBaron / Solid Hitbound production, that the Fellows attack with a blend of the snarling lead vocal supported by smooth-as-silk harmony vocal support, crafting a seamless but gritty dancer. Flip it over muscle-bound horns join the proceedings on a jerky Northern Soul dancer of equal potency! A rare disc offering two killers from Detroit with the added attraction of the George Clinton / Parliament connection. Not only as a writer but suspiciously singing as these vocals are so, so "Parliamentesque". Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 409.00

Bobby Goldsboro Too Many People The late Northern Soul DJ Nev Wherry was the main-man championing theRARE British release Northern Soul. Making this Bobby Goldsboro stomper a Cleethorpes monster! Such was the demand the bootleggers combed theUSA for a copy - there is NO USA 45 release. So they used Bobby Goldsboro's USA United Artist 91024 "Blue Autumn" lp track - wrong again it's a wishy-washy inferior version. So, even after that ridiculous bootleg Nev with his signature smile spun his Green & White 1967 UK DEMO it became Cleethorpes & Wigan Casino monster. Sorry, this item has already been won! An ooh-so-potent Chicago Northern Soul shaker, vibrantly-raw unpolished session that just rips-it-up! NB "Do You Get The Message" was NOT issued on Jimmy's Giant 708 release.
