What's The Most Ridiculous Cover- Up Name
Lenny Gamble - we all know this was in fact Ady Croasdale There was a long standing yet disproved rumor that David of David And The Giants Ten Miles High was in fact David Cassidy, like I say this was disproved, however, a few years ago I met Danny Bonaduce on North sea Ferries. Danny Bonaduce was in fact a screaming homosexual and he joined me for a drink on the Starlight Deck, I am straight but Danny had taken a shine to me for some reason. After a few duty free Stella's we got onto the subject of David Cassidy and Danny swears blind that David of David And The Giants Ten Miles High was in fact David Cassidy.

Soul Fan Or Scene Fan?
Well if there is one thing for sure it is the passion, reading all of the comments you can see that every one has a love for the music and their own way of being exposed to it. We do have many factors colliding, some complimenting and some that are a paradox, I think this is because it. "The Northernsoul Scene", is a very British cultural thing with all of the complexities such as nostalgia, economical divides, geographical divides, emotional connections to various records and even venues. We have some whose eyes roll back as they are transported to another place and another time on hearing the first few bars of a 45 and this can be achieved on the internet, we also have the, dare I say faithful? Who are searching for paradise lost? At Allnighters, we have a wide and varied "Scene" but we do have a scene. Looking back at our Barry's original grenade, re "Brownie Points" I think it right and proper that we have an appropriate matrix to show the points available to win or loose offer a year: Being Old enough to have attended Wigan Casino 0 Points Having attended Wigan Casino 25 Points Drowning on that you attended Wigan Casino -25 Points Wearing Baggy Pants 5 Points Not wearing baggy pants 10 Points Wearing Shorts -5 points Say get that shite jimmy bo horne off its rubbish -10 Points Dancing in your bedroom 5 points Getting caught by your mother in law -5 Points Being Ady Croasdale 6 Points Pretending to be Ady Croasdale 10 Points Asking for the Snake 5 Points Playing the Snake -5 points I hope this clears one or two things up reference the points system, it is of course a work in progress and please feel free to add to this matrix as you see fit.

Soul Fan Or Scene Fan?
"Just a lot of people who can no longer be bothered travelling" Mmmm is this a wind up? A group who travel for music, well aint that a "Scene"? Since when did a "Scene" ever require unity and a few central venues? The punk, mod, Goth, Rockabilly, Phyco Billy "Scenes" never did? There is no battle for supremacy between the promoters, each and every one offers a very different serving of Northernsoul, some like it hot n spicy while some like it a little more tame, besides it will always be the punter who decides no matter what any promoter writes on his/her flyers. "Egocentric approach to promoting" an ego does not fill a venue? The choice of DJ, the timing, the location and the venue all have an impact, if it was just about ego the Rocket would be the new Casino, it is not. "Scene is fractured and there is absolutely no desire amongst these large promoters to integrate" Why on earth should they? I want different flavors' from each event or there is no point in me traveling. If you think there is no scene then you're not getting out. My Northernsoul scene is a group of friends who ring around each other; arrange transport together to get to a venue one or two hours drive to be with other like minded people who love this music. What we do when we get there is socialize, dance and act a little silly, aint that a scene? Coz there are a lot of nighter goers who do this.

Alcohol At Allnighters...is There Really Any Need For It?
Dave some of those pigeons where sluts! I fancied most of them; it's great that these clubs exist and the Bolton Pigeon fanciers club was ahead of its time and well before the internet sites that specialize in sexy pigeons. I remember buying a hand full of Millet in the toilets one night just before the RSPCA raided the place and I got busted.

Do Records Make The Dj
Good question, what does make the DJ? I personally have no time for the phony famous. I don't mind cheque book Charlie's and born again Brian's (I do apologise for any DJ known as Charlie or Brian) I am of course impressed with a good record box but if they are a knob head then I don't visit their venue, well not too often any way. To play your stuff is one thing but to play the right stuff takes a little more, don't ask me what coz I don't know. I have seen the mighty and the meek both fill and empty dance floors so I think the dancer has a lot to do with it, Maxims has the floor that will tolerate most things and give them a fair crack of the whip. I love to hear new stuff but it's got to be soulful and danceable, I'm, not a beard stroker and most DJ's have some thing to offer unless they are just the meat n tattie boys with little to know imagination. I think kid no hair has a valid point

Grade 2 Listed Soulies
Grade 2 listed Soulies Billy Whiz I was going to add this to people with soul; by all means Mods move this if it's better suited there? I want to nominate Billy Whiz for the title of "Northern soul's Listed People" Billy is omnipresent on the scene, he is a living icon of Wigan Casino yet he is a down to earth good guy who is polite and genuine. He is a great ambassador for the nighter scene and I just want to give him a thumbs up on here, Soul Source, a site that I know he loves and reads. Billy, you are now officially "listed"

What Do You Really Want From A Venue?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Odf0KpluvgM&feature=player_embedded Sean Chapman dusted off this old Imber Village Soul Club sound on Saturday Night, its going for over two grand!

What Do You Really Want From A Venue?
What do you really want from a venue? Do you want to hear the Kev Roberts Top 500? Do you want a safe mix of every thing? Do you want an evening of new and exiting music that you can dance to? There are many different venues who promise us things, some fall very short in their delivery and there are many who follow the formula. I went to maxims on Saturday night, there where two allnighters to choose from this particular evening and it was a 50 50 coin toss as to where I chose. A decision never the less had to be made and I chose Maxims in Wigan. What di you choose to do and why? Maxims is a club that reminds me of the eighties and early nineties before the third wave of Northernsoul and dare I say a better time? Well it was certainly the leaner years with quality venues and less hand baggers, letters to the usual address. What we got at Maxims was a better and more distilled package, the venue it self can hold over a thousand people! The dance floor is big enough with out it swallowing us all up, there is ample room to mingle and yet it retains its coziness. I love the idea that we are in a "disco", the music system is by far more superior than most of the nighter venues I have been to and the positioning of the DJ's add to the atmosphere making them centre stage yet not dominating the landscape. If you didn't go on Saturday night then why not? I'll tell you what you missed. No I'll tell you first what it was not, it wasn't Wigan Casino, I have to mention this because there may have been a slight preconception? Sat near me where two local ladies with faces like slapped arses, Imberboy decided to investigate why, They told me that they had asked for Frank Wilson and Out on the floor and couldn't understand why the DJ didn't have them, I explained the music policy of rare and progressive sounds but this was like trying to educate pork! I am sorry for the two ladies but you have to read the label before you open the tin. No back to what you missed if you didn't go, first up was Caz, Caz had the unenviable task of playing to a cold floor as the venue was filling up, never the less caz belts out stormer after stormer with the deftness of some one who knows and loves the dance floor, about time Caz was given a later slot me thinks? I was in mingle mode so the next Jock I saw was Sean Chapman, now if you don't know of this young man or if you have never heard him then trust me any journey will be well worth it to experience his dynamic enthusiasm that literally infects the dance floor. I am not going over the top here folks it was like a soul bomb going off and the floor went mental radio rental! Middleton was never about a place, it was about an attitude. That attitude was for Soul music that was rarely played and for soul music that was progressive, yup you can hear the odd anthem but for me it was the pinnacle of Northernsoul that makes DJ's raise their game and that Middleton Sound, that Middleton attitude is very much alive and kicking the living shat out of the competition, if there is such a thing as competition to this very unique brand of allnighter? We where treated to some new faces, new faces to me, maybe I need to get away from the M62 corridor, we were treated to some new sounds that made me drool and wonder where these gems keep getting unearthed from, this is what I got into Northernsoul for in the first place and this is what keeps me going, a determination by the record gurus to keep pushing the boundaries and it is here at Maxims that we have our church and it is a broad church indeed. Just when I think the water is clearing, Soul sam steps up to the plate and what he did this night was like watching The Sorcerer's Apprentice as magic came out of the speakers. Sam aint every ones cup of tea I know because he refuses to follow any lead, Sam is Maxims cup of tea and we love him with milk and sugar and a massive slice of Battenberg and chocolate hob knobs. By now my legs where getting cramp but the night was far from over as Bob took position behind the decks. Bob made the mid session of Maxims sound flat in comparison to what he played and the pace was turned up to fever pitch, each and every track made me smile as I watched the dancers rejuvenate and bust their funky shapes. If you could have recorded Bobs set we would have had the next biggest Northernsoul CD and I would name it "Simply Quality" How can you follow a true professional who is definitely at the top of his game? Well Robbo steps up with unflinching modesty and crowns the night with a splendid mix of old and new giving every one present a feeling that each track has been especially selected for them, Robbo doesn't stamp his personality onto his set, rather he offers it unassuming the mantle of a great man and a fantastic end to a fantastic night. Middleton is dead, long live Maxims! If you are in any doubt what so ever that this is just another Northernsoul venue than let me put your mind at rest, it is not, it is magic.. We will watch this grow and grow. Yes there are many who are still in mourning for Middleton but the soul is still alive and the bricks and mortar we left behind a few miles down the road are just building materials they have as much magic now as a shopping center. Maxims is what the Northernsoul scene needs and wants, check it out.

The North South Divide
The North South Divide Its grim oop North Never ever done any Southern nighters darn Sarf apart from "t" Undred Club many years ago so I am asking the question rather than telling. Just recently I went to a massive scooter rally on The Isle of Wight where I did The Hipshakers who had advertised a Northernsoul room. My experience of this was not too impressed to say the least the evening started with a lady dumping a complete canister of talc then proceeded to disappear for the rest of the evening this was then followed by a procession of chaps spilling beer whilst walking across the dance floor. Later a clutch of trendy bendies hit the floor complete with bottles of blue stuff and yup, spilled this on the floor. Sean Chapman tried valiantly to stop this but to no avail. The music went from very good at the start to dia fookin bollockale towards the end with every clich being presented. Now I know this was a scooter rally but I just want to ask the question if this is what happens darn sarf on the nighter scene? I'm not trying to pick a fight and I'm not trying to diss any promoter, I just want to know?

Djs On Top Of Their Game ?
Bob Hinsley Robbo Sean Chapman I know Middleton has gone but any DJ who could hold a regular spot at either Middleton or now Maxims at Wigan gets my vote. You just expect magic at these events and I truly believe that it is a rare case of both the dancers and the DJ interacting with each other. I think that any DJ who can resist the same old same old and yet still inspire the dances is a rare thing and quite magical when it happens.

Ever Been Asked For A Request ?
I have just received an e-mail from Columbia's lawyers who represent Mark Wirtz, I am pasting this in: Dear Sir Our office received three phone calls today reference the request for Mood Mosaic: A Touch of Velvet a Sting of Brass. Our client, Mark Wirtz, is insistent that he could possibly enter into talks to consider the re issue of A Touch of Velvet a Sting of Brass originally released in 1966 on EMI Columbia DB 7901 as long as this gets some plays on the nighter scene.

Ever Been Asked For A Request ?
I was horrified to read this post yet I find it indicative of the Northernsoul in general, I would definitely name and shame him or her because this is not the sort of person that we want or need at our events. The promoters are being let down, the DJ's and collectors and even the artists themselves are indirectly being let down, yes this sounds a little over the top but I will explain..... Imagine one of the punters has asked for an underplayed, forgotten or abandoned track like say "A Touch of Velvet a Sting of Brass" then this would have been an ideal opportunity to give this track a rebirth and as daft as this may seam, the chance of that artist re issuing the track and earning some money, lets face it we have all felt the pinch of late. I think who ever is responsible for this should realise the implications and at least buy the DJ a drink, Southern comfort n Coke wasn't it?

Ever Asked A Dj For A Request
Ever asked a DJ for a request and they tell you the usual? Well I have been asking for a certain record to be played up and down the Nighter circuit for some time and the night it gets played I miss it when flitting from room to room. The track I want to hear and dance to aint too high brow in fact to many it's a little low brow and well and truly into the Divvey District, my requested tune is Mood Mosaic - A Touch Of Velvet A Sting Of Brass and Diane Djdivadi Crosby is going to play it for me this Saturday at Rugby!!! Any one else ever had to work hard to get a track played? Thanks Diane!! XX, see ya Saturday

Autumn Of Tomorrow ?
I find the reference to devil worship to be a little offensive and over the top. Both my wife and I are regular church goers and staunch Rotarians besides my record player is broken and only plays backwards. Just a quick one on playing records backwards, If you play Beloyd - "get into your life" backwards it says "Get into your car and drive mo fo"
