  8. Still recovering from another blinding night at North Herts Number 1 Rare Soul venue and what a night it was! Considering that we were expecting only around 100 in, due to it being Bonfire night and the Hembsy Rally being on, we were more than pleased to welcome 260 through the doors. All of whom were up for dancing from the start. The night was, in the opinion of many that I spoke to on the night and who have phoned and emailed me since, one of the best yet (so if you werent there you missed a belting one!) The atmosphere was electric, the people great and the music outstanding with the across-the-board policy working well to get even the most sore feet grooving.Guests Sean Chapman and Dave Halsall did fantastic sets in The Ghetto! and Sean also in the Main Hall where a sea of dancers greeted his every selection. It says something for Sean when he managed to keep the loyal Ghetto Crew upstair with him whilst Soul Sam was ripping up the dance floor in the Main Hall. (I am sure Sean will post his own comments on the night here when he gets back from Italy!) Mr Halsall surprised many with an excellent selection of the great and the good in Modern Soul and has earned a deserved return trip to what many consider one of the best modern rooms in the South.Needless to say Taffy, Nathan and Soul Sam delivered their usual quality sets which saw, as always, The Ghetto! grooving as only they can. DArcy in particular was a very happy and VERY sweaty man by the close :-)In the Main Hall the atmosphere was buzzing and again an across the board policy of oldies, newies etc went down well with the Soulful and the dancefloor groaned under the weight of slipping and sliding leather soled feet. Fingers and Hammie were greeted with the usual warm embrace by the Plinston regulars, Soul Sam (making another venture into the main room from The Ghetto!) played one of the best sets he has done, according to many, and as stated Sean Chapman really brought the house down, even despite his dubious dancing and obviously doddgy T-shirt choice!!!!! I finished the last hour with a mix of classic oldies, quality 70s and a few sixties newies and ending the night with Im On My Way to a handclapping acomplment from those still with enough energy to so so. The Mojo Room saw busy action all night and I last got a chance to spin my R&B selection in there to an apprecitive crowd. At this rate we may even convert Soul Sam...or maybe not :-)))))In short, a great night and roll on January 14th with Ginger, Mischief and Dave Flemming guesting...be there or miss out on one of the Souths best nights! TheBigO * So many fun things to report but will just note a few here: Soul Sam in a red stetson hat at the end in The Ghetto! spinning The Whole Damm Worlds Going Crazy and dedicating it to the Us election; Sean Chapman mincing, that is the only word we can use, all night to the Toons, Taffy standing with a handbag outside the Ladies trying to look OK with it; the girls outside having a cigarette and trying not to look like naughty schoolkids; Tim Brown getting really p***ed off at the number of people telling him that the rare Constelations track he reviewed was an old Plinston spin; myself and Sean being caught in some very dubious poses (see photos elsewhere)...the list is endless so feel free to add

Sadly us mere mortals will have to be content with trying to mug them for it or praying to the God that is Mr Anderson that he may be able to secure the rights to it for a Grapevine release. taffy Posted: 2003/11/19 20:12 Updated: 2003/11/19 20:12 Regular Joined: 2003/6/30 From: letchworth Posts: 32 Re: eric lomax girl your so good -c/u and 4 out of the 5 came via soulbowl. Is it an unissued acetate? Who knows, but I did hear rumour some time ago that Mr Anderson was trying to secure the rights to an unissued UK LP by someone well known that fell through so it may be that if it is unreleased. Questions, always questions!!!! Mind you, at the next Plinston both Mick Smith and Butch can spin it at the same time in both rooms, that should really p*** us all off and rub salt in the wounds!!!! It is still a great record and one I belivie that Mick S spun first a good few years back so hats off to him for such a quality tune. Another for the Southern Soul Fraternity!!! Guest Posted: 2003/11/20 16:21 Updated: 2003/11/20 16:21 Re: eric lomax girl your so good -c/u Correction - I have been told by my all-seeing Guru Taff that it was Dave Welding, then Butch then Mick then Steve who got the said record in that order - so a slap on the wrist for me, and a slap around the head for the smug Taff!!!!! Oh and he knows, because hes been told, the story behind the 45 I belive. As for John Manship willing to part with £££s for any info on its real identity I think his moneys safe because at 4 figures for one you can bet that said 5 DJs/Collectors will not be rushing to phone him to screw themselves!!!! Has anyone checked with Im back; Im gone;Im back; Im gone etc etc Levine to make sure he hasnt got boxes of this rare gem stashed away, like his other rare items: 4 Vandells and so on??? Anyway, thats the fun of collecting :-) * Funny how this tune has been spun at the 100 and Cleethorpes for a good few years and not a whisper - now, BANG! Any reason for this or has the North just caught up with it???? mike- Posted: 2003/11/20 16:55 Updated: 2003/11/20 16:55 team member Joined: 2002/8/26 From: Posts: 2244 Online! 12. SOULGATE N14 — THE GATHERING! Hard to believe that it’s 1 year since we were all gathered together to say our last goodbyes to our dear friend, Randy Cozens, but here we were, once again gathering to celebrate the life, music and ideals of ‘a good friend of ours’. ‘Ye Olde Rising Sun’ was once again the venue that would play host, as it has done almost exclusively for the past 18+ years, to the alldayer that is simpley known as SOULGATE and by 12pm on Saturday afternoon the decks and sound system were in place, the DJ’s were beginning to gather, the pub staff were bracing themselves for the onslaught to come and the doors were thrown open to the best soul event in North London. Throughout the day the venue saw a steady stream of Soulies coming to pay their respects and share their memories of Randy and dance to some truly great music from across the eras and across all styles — stompers rubbed shoulders with shufflers, 2-steppers and deep deep soul. The usual eclectic mix that has been the trademark of all SOULGATE’s and that strangely works to help create that unique vibe the event has. Myself and Trickster (whose lovely and long suffering wife was also in attendance) drew the short straw and were first on. The man with the nifty appreciation of all things 1950’s did a great job mixing classic Northern from recent years with forgotten oldies and got the alldayer off to a great start. I was on next, spinning a mixture of 60’s-Y2K, but was given the usual treatment from those reprobates from Letchworth I begrudgingly call my friends — namely constant heckling and questions being asked about my sexuality! Despite all this I carried on, with my 2 young boys watching on at this their first experience of daddies rare soul world (poor sods!) and then made way for ‘The Ladies Choice’ Taffy. At this stage I thought now was the best time to drop the kids off at my brothers and save them from Taffy’s selection J and so I missed out on around 2hrs worth but returned with my lovely wife Jane at just after 4.30pm to find the venue buzzing and a good sized crowd in residence. Jo Wallace, Buey, Johnny Timlin, Tony Smith and the Master that is Terry Jones were doing the honours to an appreciative audience that included, amongst the faithful, such faces as Terry and Paul Cozens, Tim Brown, Keb Darge and Ady C, who was due on later. All did a great job but I must single out Jo for special mention with a great set of those beloved West Hampstead toons that had many of us trying to get a cardiac arrest out on the floor. 6T’s Rhythm ‘N’ Soul never sounded better and I for one was one happy, now very sweaty, punter! Top work and she’s a girl as well — go figure J With the evening session came the arrival of those 3 stalwarts of SOULGATE, Roger Stewart, Taffy and the quite cuddly these days Ady C and they didn’t fail to deliver. The dance floor saw heavy action, the atmosphere was as great as always and the place was rocking! Before he came on for the last hour with Ady, Taffy could be found putting his new moves learnt at Spearmint Rhino to good use on top of the table outside the pub. Let’s just say that it was an experience to behold!!! As mentioned Taffy and Ady finished the day off with a last hour of just great great music and SOULGATE classics, each playing 3 records every time, that included the Tyrell Corporation ‘6 0-Clock’; Futures ‘Party Time Man’, Majestics ‘I love her so much it hurts’, Archie Bell ‘Where you gonna go when the partys over’ and of course the track that is fast becoming synonymous with Randy, Bobby Kline ‘Say something nice to me’. Midnight came around all too soon and the guys ended with 2 blinders. The anthemic Arthur Alexander ‘I need you’, which saw many with a tear in their eyes as memories came flooding back and ended with Jimmy Radcliffe ‘Long after tonight is all over’ which saw Taffy and Ady joined by myself, Terry and Paul, Tony Smith on the decks and a massed choir of Soulgate regulars belting out the lyrics at the top of our lungs. If the great man was looking down, as I am sure he was, he couldn’t fail to have had a huge smile on his face (and more than likely his shirt off and standing aloft a table joining in.) It was left to Randy’s youngest, Terry, to thank everyone and say the goodbyes and before we knew it another SOULGATE had come to an end and the crowd set off into the cold night air, a little damp, a little tired but full of happiness and pride at what was another great alldayer in N14 and a fitting tribute to one of the areas finest sons. Roll on SOULGATE 2005! TheBigO * I would like to extend my thanks to everyone who attended this years event and who helped to make it a success but I would like to pass on a well deserved pat on the back to Taffy and to Terry & Paul, without whom this event would simply not have happened. They are a credit to Randy’s memory and something tells me the legacy of Rare Soul in N14 isn’t over yet. Well done lads, it IS appreciated. Photos will be posted later but be very very AFRAID!!! Aplogises to those DJs I didnt mention above, I was so busy groovin and chatting that I didnt get everyones names but know that you are loved and appreciated by everyone and I am sure someone will put my omissions right.
  13. Not sure if my last posting made it or not so here it is again. Need the 2 people who came along to the Plinston last Friday to get in touch so that i can get you sorted out for the next one on July 2nd to make amends for the Queen tribute band that were on at the hall :-)))))) Email me at nh6tsmafia@aol.com and just tell me where you saw the information (cause I know and Ill know its you!)and we can get you along to our humble little abode. 14. Hi Had a few calls asking when the guests would be on tonight, obviously looking to avoid my spot then!, so as Ill be running around from now until 2am tonight getting things sorted I thought Id pop a notice here... Alan H, Arthur Fenn and Dave Welding in that order will be on from 10.45pm until 1.30am in the Main Hall and Alan in the MOJO Room from approx 11.30ish and Dave and Arthur in The Ghetto from 11pm-12.30pm but that could change as anyone who has ever been a guest at the Plinston will testify and done The Plinston Dash. :-) Lastly can we please please please try and leave the huge posters on the walls until 12am this time and try and not to look too desperate PLEASE!!!!!! See you all tonight. TheBigO
  15. Seems my posting worked then as weve gone through almost 200 tickets in less than a few days! Looks set to be another great night so if you are travelling PLEASE get a ticket from the Box Office (01462-672003) or reserve one from us at the usual contact address to avoid having to wait to get in or, worse, being turned away. We are very pleased to have our special guests joining us for this the 2nd Plinston of 2004: The Dome supremo and owner of tasty suits Mr Alan Handsome Handscombe who will be gracing the decks both in The Main Hall and The Mojo Room and spinning some of his little beauties that have got them grooving at the Tuffnel Park venue over the past few years; Arthur Fenn needs no introduction to most and will be in both the Main Hall, meaning Soul Sam will only be in The Ghetto! for this night, as well as The Ghetto! and a varied and exciting selection of tip top toons is expected; finally Mr Dave Welding is the Midlands best kept secret as far as we are concerned and should surprise a lot of people in both the Main Hall and The Ghetto! with his knowledge and collection that he has amassed over the last 30+ years on the scene. Dave has turned both Taff and myself, and countless other name DJs, on to some blinding obscure and not-so-obscure gems and so we are pleased that we have been able to give him the wider exposure he deserves and thus be able to doth our cap in his direction - a genuine guy and a tip-top soul boy. Of course The usual Suspects will be behind the decks as always and Keith Hammond and others will be there to help you part with your hard earned readies via the medium of merchandise :-) Probably my last post before the event so have a great weekend all and see ya next Friday for the usual Happy People Party that is the Plinston :-)
  16. Latest news from the Box Office today is that they are no longer reserving tickets on the door for picking up on the night due to a change in policy. Dont have the full details yet but if you dont have a credit card then drop us a line at the 6Ts Mafia, along with all the names of those who want one put by, and we will sort it this time. The buzz on this one is huge and growing and looks set to be another packer so dont delay - be sure to put yourself where the action is on Friday May 7th! In addition the latest Trading Cards are out there, after a cock-up in the design stage (see elsewhere for the scan), and features The Plinston Family Movie and the July Trading Card reveals all on Roger Banks secret life :-) TheBigO nh6tsmafia@aol.com
  17. Hi all, Just a note to say the latest issue of RECORD COLLECTOR has a 4 page article on Northern Soul with contributions from Ady, Alan Handscombe, Ginger Taylor, Jo Wallace amongst others. God love him :-) ) So, enjoy the pics and all comments of a dubious nature are encouraged....TheBigO
  19. Seems that the P.O b****ked up our mail out and some people didnt get their notification that the planned Plinston night this Friday 19th March is not on and has been cancelled. Next night is Friday May 7th with Arthur Fenn, Dave Welding and Alan Handscombe. Please spread the word to avoid fellow soulies turning up and dancing to a Jimi Hendrix Tribute band - PLEASE!!!! TheBigO
  20. Great news that Taffy posted re: Soulgate being held on Saturday 26th June 2004 in honour and memory of Randy, and as he had instructed. I know all the Letchworth crew are looking forward to it and I hope that the event is well supported and that we can raise more money for the nominated charities. As always Ive been put in charge of the flyer designs so expect a special Trading Card to be on the look-out for! The DJ line-up is HUGE with many of the scenes TOP DJs pledging their support. Full details will follow Im sure from Taff and from myself with updates etc, so start spreading the news (Old Blue Eyes!) an get your arse down for what I am sure will be a fantastic alldayer - and FREE as well!!! 21. Ah, it does my old heart good to confirm that the next night at North Herts venue for all things soulful, The Plinston, will be Friday 7th May and will of course be another 3-room packer. The Usual Suspects of Taffy, Nathan, Hammie, Fingers, Soul Sam, Ab, Leon, Kieron and Yours Truly will be joined by 3 tip-top guests: Alan Handsome Handscombe (in both the Main Hall and The Mojo), and both Dave Dracula Welding and Arthur Uncle Fester Fenn (Main Hall and The Ghetto!). The usual mix of forgotten oldies, current monsters and new spins will be the order of the day and as always its an 8pm-2am job. We will be featuring our guests from the cancelled event in March, namely Gene R and Mr Mischief, at a later date for those eager to pay homage as they DJ. Full details will be posted in the events guide shortly so keep em peeled and spread the word. Also keep the March event flyers as they will now be worth something one day :-) Last, and by no means least, the guests will be this months Trading Cards, a special group of 3 being issued in their honour, so keep an eye out for The Plinston Family Trading cards as, and I know your chuffed about this, they will be in a strictly limited number available on the night and at select venues across this land of ours. And NO you cant get the missing ones to complete your set, unlike some when we say limited we mean limited!!!!! Hugs and love TheBigO
  22. Hi all, Due to unforeseen circumstances outside of our control the March 19th event at the Plinston Hall, Letchworth has been cancelled. We are looking at trying to reschedule to an alternative date but failing that our next night will be Friday May 7th with Alan Handscombe joining our residents and another T.B.C. We are sorry about this and hope that as many of you as possible will spread the word at venues and via the web etc to ensure that everyone knows about this and avoid fellow soulies turning up on the night. Ill post further news as soon as I have it re the next night. Thanks all for your help with this. TheBigO
  23. Hi all, tickets are flying out the door but there are still some left BUT, and I say this every time, if you are travelling call the Box Office (01462-672003) to make sure you can get in. You can ask them to hold the tickets for you and pay on the door (at the ticket price of £6). Its easy and makes sure you get in!!!! (and to the smart arse who emailed me, no Mr Smug its not a ploy to get people to come, ask anyone who attends, its always a 350/400 packer!!!) Now, I have to get back to the phone and heading off for the set up that no one ever sees! TheBigO * One last point: dont email from 4pm today as we wont be able to read them AND leave the posters on the wall until after 12am PLEASEEEEEEEE! Then you can grab them in the Plinston Scramble!!!
  24. With the weekend coming to an end and people planning for next weekends soulful fix we have been able to get a better grip on what the demand for tickets is going to be for Fridays event with Mick, Butch and Sam et all. In short HUGE!!!!! We have recieved over 40 emails requesting tickets for Friday (accounting for 100) and I know that the 100 Club was full of people saying they were coming down. If that is the case then we strongly advise you to get a ticket or reserve one before setting off as we have a regular attenence of over 350 and, having done the number crunching, if everyone turns up who says they will then we are on for another sell-out and a waiting list adopted to get in!!!!! Dont say we didnt warn you......that said, looks set to be an absolute BLINDING night so see ya inside. * Mick and Butch and Soul Sam will be on from 9pm onwards so come early
  25. Hi Brothers&Sisters, The family and I jet off this Friday for the rather nipple freezing -40c and 6ft of snow that is Minnesota at this time of the year for Xmas, where the wife and kids can sample the delights of the Mall Of America and I can be found, as usual, knee deep in shite, dust, the heady aroma of dubious leaf products from the staff wading through the racks of 45s and Lps that my little source has in his warehouse. Whilst Im away anyone that needs info on the forthcoming, and looking to be a sell-out, Plinston bash with Butch and Mick Smith guesting should call the lovely Kay on 01438-236808 where she will impart words of wisdom and answer any queries you may have. Have a lovely Xmas everyone and heres to a successful and soulful New Year for all clubs in 2004. Now, wheres my thermal jock strap?......
