Do You Have Enough Money To Be A Top Northern Soul Dj?
Ok, if an apology isn't enough, fair do's, I don't hold grudges, but you are quite welcome to if that's your type of personality. Like I said, I didn't intend to insult you, your night or the music, I simply didn't understand at that time.

Yeah thanks Trev. What I went on about at the Moortown do, wasn't against you though, I (as you say) had been away for a while and was suprised as to how much the music had slowed down, I was told by yourself I think, that it was because the people that used to go to the nighters in the old days were getting on a bit and couldn't keep up to the pace of the 100 mph stompers anymore, so the music had slowed down to accommodate them. I also found it hard to understand why when the rare and underplayed was played not many danced, but when a classic was played they did, I was advised also by yourself that it wasn't about the dancing to R&U, and if a few were tapping their feet, that was ok. All I said was that if more classics were played more would dance. You have to understand that as you say, I had been away for a while and that was the first event I had been to for about 15 years so a lot had changed in that time, as when I left there was no such thing as the R&U scene, or not that I knew of anyway. It came as a bit of a shock to me as it would to anyone else experiencing the same. Maybe I should have done a bit more market research? I don't have any enemies myself and if I insulted you or upset you on that night I apologise, it wasn't intentional. Steve

Do you have something against me? 'SM1964'? Everytime I comment you slag me down? Strange that you prefer to hide behind a username and not answer my PM as to who you are?

"THE BEST WAY TO GET A SPOT AND PERHAPS THE EASY EST IS JUT COME STRAIGHT OUT WITH IT TO THE PROMOTER AND ASK FOR A SPOT" Wrong that 'd', the best way to get a spot is to start up your own night. A lot of the time (not all), events tend to be a closed shop with their own residents and guests, and merely asking a promoter for a spot is much of the time a non starter. A promoter has to be sure that as well as having the right tunes, you also have the ability to play them. By play them I mean to please a crowd, use the gear etc. If you're going to ask a promoter for a slot, then you have to have ammunition to back it up, either by asking him to come and hear you play elsewhere, or asking him to ask another promoter how you did at their gig. No promoter in their right mind would give someone a slot blind.

*i easily get confused but do know that an oldies night is not a place to educate* Y'see! this is why this thread is going round in circles. It still is possible to educate at an oldies night, as mentioned what seems ages ago in this thread, there are loads and loads of oldies that don't get played anymore, that were massive back in the day. and there are a lot of folk out there that go to oldies events and hear the same old oldies, and for one reason or another might not have heard a lot of the oldies that don't get played these days. An example might be either that certain venues back in the day had their own big tunes or style of tunes, and if someone frequented one of those venues and might not have ventured much further, they may not have heard some of the tunes that were big at other venues. OR there is a lot of new blood on the scene so they will definitely not have heard ALL of the big oldies that were played at ALL the venues back in the day. So there's the educational part of an oldies scene. This thread could go on for years LOL!

I don't think it's just on this scene Beeks, the same goes on all dance music scenes and it has been that way for the last 20 years or so. At one time a DJs reputation depended on the tunes he had managed to get hold of and play. As I mentioned in another thread, giving someone who isn't a DJ a load of top tunes and asking them to DJ, is the same as giving someone who has no idea about engineering a set of spanners and asking them to build a car.

Ian if it helps, I was chatting to Gary a few weeks ago. His wife Lynne came to the 'Irish Centre' do and she rang him for me. He has got rid of all his records but says he has loads of massive tunes on Cd that not many have heard. He had Rich Searling round at his a couple of weeks ago too. Still the same old Gary as far as I can make out, but without the records. I plan to pop round to see him soon as he only lives round the corner from me. Didn't know that til I spoke to him though. Or the best one is "Can you play something that we can dance to" WTF???? OR "If you play this everyone will dance" Yeah right, either only they dance when you play it, or no one at all. Dickheads!!!

Do You Have Enough Money To Be A Top Northern Soul Dj?
Yeah but I think you would be more pissed off if they said "can you play something that we know mate", which is probably closer to the point of what they mean. Not having a go Ged, but nothing makes your blood boil more than someone saying that.

What I meant was a night of stuff that used to get played regular at events up and down the country and were big tunes and don't get played now. As opposed to the stuff that didn't get played much back then but does now at R&U gigs. There is a difference.

yes and I think that 258 posts on this thread show how passionate folk are on that very fact.

Do You Have Enough Money To Be A Top Northern Soul Dj?
Yeah how about another pigeon hole? 'Underplayed oldies', that would be brilliant event, as the R&U events seem to concentrate more on the stuff that didn't and don't get played much, but a night of stuff that did get played but doesn't now would be a top idea. I'm up for it anyway.

If only it was that simple! I think the Northern scene is the only scene where it matters so much.

You are correct, in my collection I have many oldies that don't get played now but were massive back in the day i.e Short Cuts - Your eyes may shine, Barbara & Brenda - Never love a robin, Tony Lamaar - Just in the nick of time, Johnny Vanelli - Seven days of loving you. All of these were massive back in the day but never get played now, except my myself and a mini handful of others. It's a top feeling when the older punter come up and ask what they are, and then say "I'd forgotten about this". There are so many old tunes that could get played but don't for one reason or another.

Point taken, and agreed to a certain extent. It's just that if you want an oldies collection anything like Ian's above without buying boots, that you would need a large amount of wonga. Even half of it would cost loads.

y problem isn't with the people who prefer classic oldies to underplayed and different stuff, fair enough, people can choose to dance to what they like and go where they want. My problem is with oldies DJs who play boots of these classics because they don't have the imagination or the interest or put in the effort to find their own style. Or Money!!
