Marva Whitney at the Jazz Cafe London tomorrow (sunday 23 oct)

"Marva Whitney is fondly remembered by funk devotees as one of the rawest, brassiest, most powerful divas the music ever produced." and you can catch her tomorrow! read more for info and flyer Marva Whitney is fondly remembered by funk devotees as one of the rawest, brassiest, most powerful divas the music ever produced. Along with fellow funk belters Lyn Collins, Martha High and Vicki Anderson, Marva made her name singing with the James Brown Revue, while her much-sampled recordings now fetch astronomical sums on the collector's market. In 1969 Marva made her first solo recordings and scored hits with It's My Thing (You Can't Tell Me Who to Sock It To) and Unwind Yourself. Marva hooked up with Soulpower in September 2004 and has since performed sold-out shows in Germany, France, Sweden and Finland. Sweet Charles Sherrell has worked his way up to the James Brown Band through playing with Curtis Mayfield and Aretha Franklin. His first recording as a bass player with James Brown was Say it loud (I'm Black and I'm Proud) in 1968, and his groundbreaking skills have influenced a new generation of funk bassists like Bootsy Collins. Later Charles became James Brown's musical director and wrote several songs for the godfather of soul, in addition to playing bass on the now classic, The Funky Drummer. Support on the night from Holland's Lefties Soul Connection and Jazz Cotech Dancers main-man, DJ Perry Louis. more info at http://www.meanfiddler.com/displayPage.asp?ArticleID=2639&URLID=19 marvawhitney.jpg
