Elbowed-Out -Things Are Changing - Just To Be With You

Soul Junction for some time have been releasing some quality tracks, mainly unissued 70"²s. Most have featured amongst the playlists of more discerning DJ’s up and down the country and quite rightly so.

Last summer we were treated to two unissued tracks from a group called Elbowed Out entitled Taking A Step b/w Girl You got Magic. As the Soul junction website says The group’s mission in life was “to get you up and out of your seat, and then to begin to move your feet” and both sides did exactly that.

A mixed race group pout of Seattle, the founding members were lead vocalist Sam Chambliss who also played trumpet. Lead Guitarist Denis Wilcox who also shared lead vocals. Drummer, Clarence Acox, Keyboard player Gaylord Young and a horn section that featured Ray Baldwin, Jabril Radhid and Nick Ceasar. They had all met while studying music at the University of Wasington. Sadly both Gaylord Young and Nick Ceasar are now deceased.

Elbowed-Out became regular performers at local area junior high and high school gigs, their repertoire included cover versions of songs made famous by the Blackbyrds, Crusaders and Herbie Hancock amongst others. They eventually graduated on the Seattle club scene, where they featured as the support act for the likes of James Brown, The O’Jays and Tower Of Power. Elbowed-Out later went out on the road securing touring dates across Canada. A connection was made which led to the band performing in the Pacific islands of Singapore, Indonesia and Japan. But after a period of circa Twenty year’s together they eventually disbanded and all went their separate ways.

Two more unissued 70"²s tracks are the feature of the latest offering from Soul Junction. The top side featuring the lead vocals of Denis Wilcox is an up-tempo dancer that will surely catch with Dj’s and dancers up and down the country. The flip a nice mid-tempo number with Sam Chambliss taking over on lead vocal.

Well known already by both advance plays and also via an early release of the mp3, this September Jones Voo Doo Madamoiselle 45 backed with Freddy Butler's lp track - That's When I need you, is a most worthy addition to the current stack of legendary Pied Piper releases and for me is right up there as a early candidate for the 45 release of the year.

You may also recall a earlier news article here on Soul Source featuring this fine track. It was a few weeks ago and featured a run down of the teaming up of tip top dancer Levanna McClean and Kent records which resulted in this release?

Holland-Dozier-Holland: First Look at The Listing of The Complete 45’s Set

Holland-Dozier-Holland: The Complete 45’s Collection Invictus - Hot Wax - Music Merchant - Info and a first look at the track listings

The planned release of this Box set has already caused a bit of a stir around the online soul music palaces, with speculation of the track listings

Now here on Soul Source we are pleased and proud to say that we can offer to all you soul music artisans the first public look at the track listings of this upcoming 14 (yes thats 14 not 8 ) CD box set courtesy of Harmless Records

HOLLAND, DOZIER, HOLLAND — THE COMPLETE 45s COLLECTION - VARIOUS ARTISTS

HURTBOX006 14CD 5014797890367 Harmless

The planned release date is given 19 April 2014 and have to say this does seem to be reading the details a "have your cake and eat it" release!
The releases notes below tell you that not only do you get all the 45 releases from these HDH labels (151 singles and 302 recordings total) , you also get a slack handful of unreleased acetate style tracks (16 in fact) and also 3 x Tom Moulton unreleased mixes.

Release notes follow, then the first look at the lengthy track listing of this 14 cd set

Harmless Records Release Notes....

2014 marks the 45th Anniversary of the launch of the Invictus, Hot Wax and Music Merchant labels — the trio of labels that Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier and Eddie Holland launched following their acrimonious split from Berry Gordy’s Motown Empire. Since the 45rpm record was the fulcrum of the new operation, we thought this would be the perfect excuse to celebrate the 45th anniversary by pulling together every single 45 release from the discography of Invictus, Hot Wax and Music Merchant - both A and B sides. That’s 90 x Invictus 45s, 44 x Hot Wax 45s and 17 x Music Merchant 45s — 151 singles and 302 recordings total.

In addition to the above we also scoured the world for many of the legendary unreleased singles and a number of extremely rare acetates now residing in private collections. We managed to unearth previously unreleased recordings by the Chairmen Of The Board, Eloise Laws, Honey Cone, the Barrino Brothers, the Jones Girls and 100 Proof Aged In Soul, so we’ve popped these in as a bonus. So another 16 tracks there. Oh and did we mention the 3 unreleased Tom Moulton remixes we found on Chairmen Of The Board’s “Give Me Just A Little More Time” and “You’ve Got Me Dangling On A String” and Freda Payne’s “Unhooked Generation”?

We recruited Dean Rudland to write the 80 page accompanying booklet and scoured the world for some interesting scans and pieces of memorabilia and we’ve housed everything inside a deluxe user-friendly box designed for quick reference.

This is the most comprehensive re-issue project ever undertaken on this important part of Soul music history. The Invictus, Hot Wax and Music Merchant labels continued Holland-Dozier-Holland’s golden touch with back to back international hits like Freda Payne’s iconic “Band Of Gold” and Chairmen Of The Board’s “Give Me Just A Little More Time” and then went to further huge successes with Honey Cone and Laura Lee among many others. Now, for the first time ever, you can own the whole catalogue in one superb and lavish box set.

Northern Soul Film - Record Store Day 45 Harmless Release!

Record Store Day — Northern Soul Special 7” Single

Details just in of an upcoming 45 release from Harmless Records tying in the upcoming Northern Soul Film Soundtrack and Record Store Day...
Record Store Day “Northern Soul: The Film” limited-edition 7” vinyl release. 1000 copies only. Classic pairing!
“Seven Day Lover” — James Fountain/“Hung Up On Your Love” — The Montclairs STOMP 1

The release blurb from Harmless follows below...
Harmless Records are proud to announce what will undoubtedly be one of the most anticipated Rare Soul double-sided 7” releases of all time.
Taken from the forthcoming double CD and DVD package for the film, “Northern Soul”, we are delighted to pair up two of the most iconic and cherished Soul recordings from the golden age of Northern Soul.

James Fountain’s “Seven Day Lover” released on William Bell’s tiny Peachtree Records from Atlanta Georgia in 1970 was, at the time, the rarest record ever known to the Northern Soul scene with only one known copy which was in the very safe hands of DJ Ian Levine. The next copy which turned up in the U.K. was then sold for a world record £500 in the mid 1970’s — the most that had ever been paid for a 7” single at that time. Since then the record has quite rightfully grown to the stature of one of the greatest records that has ever graced the Northern Soul scene and one which is now held in high reverence throughout all of the international Soul Music scenes.
Truly an awe-inspiring record and a classic of the highest degree.
The Montclair’s “Hung Up On Your Love” was one of a handful of records which was responsible for ushering in the age of what we now call ‘70s Modern Soul’ - the natural successor to 60s Northern Soul. Originally released on the independent Paula label from Shreveport, Louisiana, “Hung Up On Your Love” was truly one of the most groundbreaking records of the mid 1970’s. Heavily featured at Blackpool Mecca by DJ’s Ian Levine and Colin Curtis, the record took ages to break wider due to the sheer complexity of the rhythm and the unusual song structure despite the incredible intensity of Phil Perry’s unbelievable vocals which are a tour-de-force of Soul perfection.
Eventually the record broke wider throughout the North of England and is now considered to be one of the greatest of the 1970’s discoveries.
A pairing truly made in Soul Heaven.

Good to see yet more 'soul' involvement with Record Store Day which is on Saturday 19th Apr this year

Solid Hit Soul Club - London - Club Feature

Site note welcome to the first of a new feature. A lets have a look at members clubs...
SOLID HIT SOUL — A LITTLE CLUB WITH A BIG PASSION FOR 60’s NORTHERN IN THE HEART OF LONDON
The development of Solid Hit Soul has taken place over quite a few years to where we are now. The “music policy” for want of a better word is quite simple “60’s Northern”. Now that’s not to say that the odd “Crossover”, “70’s” or “R & B” doesn’t occasionally slip through the net, but overall that’s the main musical focus of the event. The other misconception is that we are somehow “anti” other styles of this great music of ours — Nothing could be further from the truth, we just felt that these other styles are catered for fantastically at other nights in London, and we wanted to create our own little niche for the style of music we’re all passionate collectors of :— “60’s Northern” Now that I’ve gotten the little political lecture out of the way, I can get off the soap box and tell you a bit more about the specifics:-
WHO — The current SHS team is made up of Dave Greenhill, Shane Cox, Stuart Tyler and myself . All of whom, with the exception of myself have stunning collections and a passion and drive to find corking 60’s Northern tunes for your entertainment. I quite happily make up the numbers, and do bring down cheap records to sell!! At each night we try and bring in a guest, who is carefully chosen to bring something special to the party and past guest lists have been a “who’s who” of some of the country’s finest 60’s Northern spinners. If that wasn’t enough, we’ve also been fortunate to have live P.A.’s from Pat Lewis, and Ronnie Walker
WHAT — As we said, 60’s Northern is our main bag, and to give a flavour of what to expect here’s the current top 5 from the residents play boxes:-
Dave Greenhill (Bucking the trend and giving us 6!!)
Jimmy Castor - It's Ok - Jet Set
Jesse Slaughter - I Had A Dream - Les Stan
Little Nolan & Soul Brothers - My Baby Confuses Me - Ty Do
Bobby Mac - Shy Guy - Vended
Gerri Taylor - I'm Satisfied With Your Love - Mica
Billy Webster & Silvertones - Give Me Your Heart - Cover Up

Shane Cox
Inspirations - Your Wish Is My Command - Midas
Three Jades - Makes My World - Maurci
Tip Tops - A Little Bit More - Roulette
Tokays — Baby, Baby, Baby - Brute
Sinceres - Girl I Love You - Pzazz

Stuart Tyler
Ted Wilson - My Aim Is To Please - Sierra
Locations - Mr Diamond Man — Ron Paul
Bobby Kline - Say Something Nice To Me - MB
Don Varner - Mojo Mama - Quinvy
Melvin Davis - A Quiet Place — Wheel City

Des Parker
Bobby Guitar Bennett — Blow My Stack — Unissued V Tone
Third Generation — It’s Our Time — Cover Up
Beverly Savage — How Can You Face the World — Tornado
Ethics — I’ll Be Gone — Unissued Vent
Trade Martin — You Move Me — Cover Up

WHERE — Our current home is a fanastic, atmospheric basement bar over the road from Liverpool Street station with free on road parking and good cheap accommodation nearby (e.g. Travel Lodge type gaffs!!!!!) Venue address is: - Shooting Star, 125-129 Middlesex St, London E1 7JF

Been going to SHS for best part of 6 years and still being put onto great new sounds by some very passionate and committed souls. The guests are of the highest quality and bring that something different in terms of both new and rare old sounds that you won't get to hear many other places down south.
Keep up the good work!
Andreas B Mar 29 2014 11:25 PM
Looking forward to experiencing this club for the first time on the 11th, coming over from Denmark. Looks like it won't disappoint by the lot of you's descriptions!
polyvelts Mar 29 2014 11:37 PM
Great little club with good quality sounds ! Speaks volumes that I'd rather hear 7tsmodern and crossover and wouldn't normally go to pure 6ts club but still love going here !! (That's a compliment by the way dave ha ha !)

Saxafone Mar 30 2014 11:28 AM
Bunch of Ba&tards, it's that good, I keep missing the last train home !
After complaining to Boris about the ridiculous situation whereby the last train leaves Liverpool St 10 minutes before the end of SHS, they are now building Crossrail out to Essex and it will run 24 hrs, sorted !
Great sounds, top people. What's not to like.

"A Little Soul Club, With A Big Passion", perfectly sums up Solid Hit Soul, and is very well "summarised" in Des's article! A perfect night out I only belatedly discovered a couple of years ago, and TBH is now the most important date in my "Soul Calendar", bar none! "Proper Northern", with both passion and thought, played by a very competent resident DJ roster, complemented by a quality guest, making the "Shooting Star" in Shoreditch a "must do" event!

Information

A quick clip of Kents release notes ...

Mary Love’s music was the foundation of our Kent label. Her recordings opened and closed the first two vinyl LPs and various artists CD, as well as appearing on the A-side of the initial Kent 45. She headlined the bill at the premier Cleethorpes Northern and Rare Soul weekender and helped Ace and Kent mark their 25th anniversaries, appearing at the celebratory live gigs. Her death in 2013 was a very sad day for us and her many fans.

This career overview CD features all Mary’s pivotal Modern sides, re-mastered from the original tapes. Nine of those 13 tracks are from the multi-track tapes and are therefore presented in their best sound quality ever. They are followed by both sides of Mary’s Josie hit, ‘The Hurt Is Just Beginning’ and ‘If You Change Your Mind’, and her wonderful Elco 45, ‘Born To Live With Heartache’, a major deep funk play in the last decade. The people involved with those recordings include Arthur Wright, Frank Wilson, Richard Parker, Miles Grayson, Ray Charles and Marc Gordon — as talented a bunch of Los Angeles musicians...

Micky Cruise - Memorial Fund Raiser

The date for the Fund Raiser Memorial Day to remember Micky and raise money for The Psoriasis Society has now been confirmed. Sunday 25th May at the Orrell in Wigan. There is a fine selection of DJ's who will be spinning quality tunes throughout the day in his memory with some fabulous raffle prizes which have been kindly donated by some of the Soul Scenes prolific DJ/Collector/Promoter/Dealer's in the UK.
Final line up and admission to be confirmed very soon. Hope lots of you can make it. I'm in no doubt that it will be a magic day to raise a glass to a man who can never be replaced. A true character and a one off in every way.
Andy Garside and Chris Waterman will keep you posted.

One In A Million - The Songs Of Sam Dees - Review

One In A Million: The Songs Of Sam Dees - Various Artists (Songwriter Series)

CDKEND 411

Meet Samuel L Dees — A Song-writing Phenomenon

As Tony Rounce clearly states in his opening gambit to the liner notes of the Kent offering: The Songs Of Sam Dees, “Few songwriters command the level of respect amongst soul fans that Sam Dees does. No single compilation could cover the whole career of a writer whose song list is a big as Sam’s”. As is usual with the Kent releases, you’d be hard pushed to find a better selection of Sam’s song-writing ability that highlights the selected time frame that concentrates mainly on his seventies decade compositions right through to the early eighties. Having already released a couple of Sam Dees CDs documenting his life and earlier career this particular compilation brings together a collection of 25 artists that recorded Sam’s songs that range from the, maybe not too well known, Larry Graham, a former bassist with Sly And The Family Stone to the majestic Gladys Knight And The Pips and all stops in between. Surely a fitting testament to Sam’s song-writing skill is the list of artists that came a knockin’ when they needed the ‘right’ song’.

Having said that... the opening track on the album is a monolithic performance from the man himself singing his stunning self penned, “My World”. The song was picked up for release from a local label by Polydor but the version included here is different one. The emotive and passionate ballad sees Sam accompanied by a piano for the most part with intricate contributions from strings and guitar but make no mistake, it’s Sam’s own deeply soulful vocals that steal the show.

The first lady of Malaco, Ms Dorothy Moore sees her outing “Girl Overboard” which saw a release on RCA featured and it’s a great reminder of how she could melt the most stringent of hearts with her pitch perfect soulful expressionism via her distinctly velvet yet southern sounding vocals. A collaboration with long term song-writing partner Frederick Knight the song is a play on the nautical theme as Ms Moore uses Sam’s poetic license to tell us she’s overboard in love for her man. The sassy “Woman’s Way” from Alabama’s Rozetta Johnson that appeared on the Clintone imprint gave her (and Sam) a bone fide hit record when at the end of 1970 it slid into the Top 40 RnB Chart at #39. Rozetta’s oft spoken vocal sits atop a string and horn laden track arranged by none other than Warren Dale and is a musical hand in glove moment. It’s difficult to imagine the song being done by anyone but Ms Johnson and her slightly strained at times vocal.

Having played Jackie Wilson’s “Just As Soon As The Feeling’s Over”, for most of my adult life and having developed a huge love of all things Davis-Sims- Sanders it’s great to see it included with such exalted company. With Jackie’s powerful range and clarity the song is almost wrung dry by him. When musical titans meld rather than clash then the end result can be stunning and stunning is exactly what this Sam Dees penned, Carl Davis produced. Lifted from Jackie’s final Brunswick LP “Nobody But You”, even now forty years after first discovering it Sam and Jackie still manage to set my soul alight.

When you combine the talented Fame studio band with a distinctively plaintive song from Sam and elicit the deeply soulful vocals of Alabama born singer Clarence Carter, it’s a fair chance that the whole kit and caboodle will cling together and fashion a performance of note. That’s exactly what happened as Clarence and producer Rick Hall cashed in on Clarence’s international smash hit ‘Patches’ and included Sam’s ”Changes” on the Atlantic album they produced in 1970. A mid tempo ballad telling the story of abandoned love, it relies on Clarence’s impassioned tones that rightly takes pride of place amongst the stabbing but subdued horns and bongo breaks. Probably overlooked by many as it quietly nestled on the album it drips the quality associated with the legendary Muscle Shoals studio and will delight fans who are hearing it for the first time.

Sam’s ability to write songs that seem to be tailor made for their individual singers is highlighted on the inclusion of Millie Jackson’s contribution to this compilation. The decision to re-edit Millie’s version of “Mess On Your Hands” and omit the rap based profanity that peppers some of her outings is a good one. The tale of warning Millie tells her new man’s lady is as you’d expect from such a defined singer. With a voice that growls her pity for the woman but then wraps around title words like a spoon in warm treacle it’s one of the highlights of the entire CD for me.

Famed Philly musical giant Bobby Martin encouraged Sam to make the move to the West Coast in the mid 70s. Originally furnishing Martin with songs for acts including Tavares he stayed a decade and ended up signing with A&M’s publishing division which saw his songs exposed to a larger list of both singers and indeed listeners. Included here is veteran jazz pianist/vocalist Les McCann’s, “So Your Love Finally Ran Out For Me”, a desperately lonely tale of a love withering on the vine and McCann’s inability to put it right. It’s a first hearing for me and has led to me searching out Les’s “Tall Dark and Handsome” album, that Mr Rounce declares is stuffed full of Sam Dee’s songs.

http://acerecords.co.uk/cache/images/CDKEND-411b_383_383.jpg

Loleatta Holloway’s deep soul vocal outings rank up with the very best and the inclusion o Sam’s ‘The Show Must Go On’ , is a well chosen representation of her style and will enthral lovers of her sometimes earthy performances and her powerful prowess in soaring from a vocal standing start to the dizziest of heights within a few seconds. For me this performance is another hand in glove musical moment, right singer, right song. In our house, it doesn’t get much better that Loleatta belting out a Sam Dees song.

http://acerecords.co.uk/cache/images/CDKEND-411d_383_383.jpg

The CD encompasses a number of Sam’s eighties composition sand included are four songs that showcase Sam’s development alongside the musical requirements of a new generation whilst remaining true to the soulful quality he’d always placed at the very core of his music. Cultured lyrics, immensely passionate vocals to interpret them and strong tenets of musicianship are the glue that hold Sam’s catalogue together and it’s a small group of songwriters that can straddle the changing times of which Sam is one. A collaboration with Jeffrey Osborne delivered a song that ushered in Sam’s eighties work and ‘Where Did We Go Wrong‘, by Los Angeles’ ex funk band and 9 piece outfit, Love, Togetherness And Devotion. Osborne, the lead singer of the group would shortly leave a strike out as a soloist but this plaintive ballad outing would ensure that he left on a high as it reached a credible #7 on the RnB Chart.

The production techniques, (some may say values) , of the eighties ushered in the use of more and more reliance on synthesized instrumentation and sometimes this can, in your author’s opinion at least, dilute the whole listening experience. Gladys Knight And The Pips had a more than fruitful relationship with Sam and included here is their Columbia outing “Save The Overtime (For Me)” and I have to be honest and say it left me a little cold. Included as a, ‘tip of the hat’ to the creative combination of the pairing of the group and Sam, the song unfortunately gets ‘mullered’ by the tacky production for me.

Bringing up the rear at Track 21 and Track 22 are two The first one is collaboration between Sam and his long time friend ex Tramps member Ron (Have Mercy) Kersey and is a better example of the soulful eighties dance style for me. Sung by Johnnie Taylor the soulful disco outing “Seconds of Your Love”, it gained both a 7inch and 12 inch release on Beverly Glenn Records (as did an LP on Taylor), but failed to make any commercial impact. The final track on this congregation of Sam’s work comes from Larry Graham, the former bassist with Sly and The Family Stone that has also had recent work released on the UK Soul Junction imprint. It’s quite fitting that this tribute to Sam closes with what was his biggest selling hit “One In A Million You”. Selling over a million copies the release on Warner Bros breached the RnB Chart in 1980 and in August of that year achieved the #1 spot eventually remaining on the charts for a full six months. It’s an impeccable ballad with which Larry’s crooning style is well matched and the success of it broadened Sam’s musical reach to artists even more.

“The Songs Of Sam Dees” is a CD that will be snapped up by the legion of Sam’s already ardent fans but it will also provide an insight of his genius to soul fans who haven’t already been converted. If my memory is correct, this is the third CD that Kent has released on Mr Dees and if Mr Rounce true to his word than Sam’s Nashville outings and his work with his own Pan Pad label are in the offing.

The Songs Of Sam Dees is available shortly from the Ace/Kent website at http://acerecords.co.uk/kent-label so pop along there and treat yourself to 22 tracks of from the work of a musical icon....tell ‘em I sentcha.

BBC 1 One Show visits Northern Soul Again

Posted up in the forums yesterday a request from the BBC asking for dancers for the 26th March in London for 'The One Show'

The full request can be read via the source forum link below

While nothing shows up yet on just what the focus of this segment is going to be, guess this news (and recent word about a bbc4 project) does sort of show that the mainstreams interest in northern soul isn't fading just yet...

Extra Rich In Soul Cd Review - Soul Junction New Release

Extra Rich In Soul - Various Artists Cat # SJCD5007

Release date Monday March 17th 2014

The Soul Junction label operated by John Anderson and Dave Welding regularly release recordings that appeal to a complete spectrum of soul fans, many of them appealing to a cross section of fans of differing genres. Their latest CD offering entitled “Extra Rich In Soul” stitches together fifteen tracks that highlight the labels’ ethos by blending some of their previously released songs with a few that are seeing a release for the first time.

The CD kicks off with a couple of outstanding earlier Soul Junction releases : The recently sadly passed Oliver Cheatham’s melodic ”Don’t Pop The Question” and Jesse James “I Can Feel Your Love Changing” . Both are fantastic efforts and the Jesse James even had your miserly author shelling out for a vinyl copy back in 2012! Of course Philly legend Jesse is well known around the soul bazars with a slew of classics that have filled Northern and Modern Soul dance-floors for decades. The inclusion of the song on this compilation, which I always thought sounded similar to Al Green’s better stuff, will hopefully let more folks know that for Jesse, there is/was a musical life after “If You Want A Love Affair”.
Another soulful stalwart who has recently passed on that saw his work picked up by Soul Junction is William Bell Weatherspoon and their 2010 release of “I Can’t Wait (Until The Weekend)” paid homage to the unique voice that was originally first head by UK soul fans as a member of Ohio’s The Soul Notes on Way Out Records and is justifiably included here.

Natural Impulse area group championed by Soul junction, the label having licensed a modern soul monster double sider from the former Californian High School band back in 2008. On this particular album the third track from the sessions that were rediscovered in 2010 is included. Entitled “We’re Gonna Make It Through” is a mid-tempo, almost shuffling dancer with a prominent horn section waving its way in tandem to a strained male vocal supported by angelic femme back up and a lilting alto sax providing timely solos. If there are any other tracks in the can from this group than we need to hear them for sure.

Unreleased at the time many of Detroiter Clayton Hooker’s recordings have gained favour in recent times and Soul Junction look to satisfy fans of this smooth sounding vocalist and multi-talented musician with the inclusion of two tracks that see the light of day for the first time. “Have You Had Enough”, a lilting ballad that sways along with Clayton’s velvet laid back vocal up front and centre and “Say It Again” which sees Clayton adopt a high tenor range on a slightly disco sounding track peppered by what sound like handclaps which for me is a waste of his vocal talents. The song is pretty nondescript to my ears although fans of this semi-disco styled soul may well appreciate it more.

Janet Wright, a native Detroiter enjoyed her first recording sessions for the famed Magic City Records logo before being employed at the legendary United Sound Studio undertaking backing vocal duties for many of the classics recorded there. With such a pedigree it’s no surprise that she later struck out with other backing singers to form Consumer Report and enjoyed a release for Atlantic Records. Back in Detroit and under her stage name of Pix’y she recorded in 2013 her unique version of the Rose Royce classic “Love Don’t Live Here Anymore” and it’s this outing that is included here. Cover version for me at least, need to ensure that it’s not an imitation of the original and Ms Wright captures the passion of the original whilst still stamping uniqueness on her own vocal interpretation which on such an iconic song is just what’s required.

In case you’re wondering about the title of the compilation it’s taken from the work of Eric Oliver Harris who records under the name of E.R.I.C (Extra Rich In Class) a former bank teller from New York who is now a full time musician and who’s “Backstage”, from 2012 that is featured here. A modern anthem now, it’s once again a laid back vocal performance that highlights that quality, well produced soul music is alive and well.

So, Soul Junction’s “Extra Rich In Soul” CD covers a number of releases from the past six years of the labels history and combines it with a spattering of new voices/music for the first time. I’ve left some for listeners to discover for themselves, having given a flavour of it. It manages to combine the sound of laid back soulful vocals with strong musicianship and will delight fans of the, almost lounge music sounding, side of the soulful sound. If your idea of ideal soul is Joe Hicks belting out “Don’t It Make You Feel Funky” or Gil Scott Heron’s hard driving social commentaries, then you’ll need to move along because there’s nothing here for you but if, like me, you can step into different genres with the ease of a hand sliding into a silk lined glove and if you don’t won these tracks on vinyl then this CD is a must for you.

So... off you pop and secure you’re copy from soul junction at http://www.soujunctionrecords.co.uk tell em I sentcha.

Thanks for the review Dave
But I would just like to point out to the readers that the Jesse James in question (a.k.a James McClelland) was originally from Richmond, California and has for some considerable time now been a resident of Stockbridge ,Georgia. Therefore he is not the same guy as the Jesse James out of Philadelphia.

Top quality cd from start to finish. Great to be reminded of the calibre of previous releases such as David Washington , Audio , Jesse James and Bill Spoon but to me the icing on the cake is the previously unissued Natural Impulse cut. Lovely track. Another winner from Soul Junction. Mark Houghton

Its looks like a really fun film, his story is unbelievable we all know that, but I just wonder about that actor as James Brown, he's not real enough for James, not rough enough... maybe its just the trailer.

Thought 'Ray' was a good film also, but its not the way I'd like to remember Ray Charles.. and I think this film on James Brown will be very much the same, do you know what I mean...

Its all going well for Dale now, after months of training he,ll do 100 miles easly with still 2 weeks to go, raised over £1000 up to now, be great to double it. Everybody who knows him have never had a bad word for him, helps people out with dj equipment or lifts to venues, so how about sponsoring him for a great cause.

Prestayn Weekender 2014 - A Lookback by Dave Thorley

Had a great time at Prestatyn. The event that brings together all shades of the scene and celebrates what's happening around it. Not all of it for me, but so much good stuff, that there were always many options of places to be, chat, laugh and dance.

The Impressions, were off the good scale, still have great voices, treated us to an hour of ballads and dancers, but everyone a classic. Richard Searling and his team did a fantastic job and with 3500 peeps in and all that I saw and spoke to smiling and enjoying themselves, a great weekend.

The records available for sale were amazing, for those that want that, the rest of the 'Soul Bazar' not for me, but clearly some like that and each to his own. In fact that is what this event does so well, it entertains all shades of the soul scene and long may it continue to do so.

The Uptight room went well for its first, bringing another dimension to the mix of music played across the weekend. A massive thanks to David Ripolles, David Abbott, Ian Wright, Leona Murphy, Mick H and SoulShakers Bamberg for their sets and enthusiasm for the idea of the room. Not going to say "room awesome, DJ's played out of their socks, and busy room etc". No, over all a good starting point, floor was busy all night, but room numbers fluctuated all night. But Richard S and I are both happy enough to do it again next year. Soul Sam says hi to everyone and says he'll be back for next year. Thanks to all that came and joined in, especially the dancers, those that never left the floor all night.

Lastly love the 2 hour Stafford set with my old navigator Ady Pountain by my side. Shocking time 5-7 Saturday afternoon, so was so pleased to see so many come to join us. It was fun to be back there if only sound wise for a few hours and clearly the people in the room did.

So all in all fab weekend, for any dissenters, get over yourselves, it's a once a year bit of fun with many old mates, not critical Nato peace talks upon which civilization it's self depends.

Dave

First off I should say that I was not there. Sounds like a really good event this year - loads going on and great live acts. Hope everyone had a fab time.

On a rather controversial point I saw this comment from someone who is very well respected on the scene about the DJ/music policies - on the usual topic I'm afraid. I can't say whether it is true or not but I just thought it was worth a post (in this internet 'free' world):

Have to say that some of the main room "DJs" at Prestatyn obviously weren't prepared for the turntable cameras....plenty of bootlegs, pressings, carvers and other dodgy vinyl on video...l hope you were suitably embarrassed guys

I'm not trying to stir things up, but for an event such as Prestatyn I was a bit surprised. I think something as big as Prestatyn reflects on the wider scene.

I would think twice about travelling a long way to a venue and spending hard earned dosh if I though DJ's were playing boots.

Sh*t - sorry guys and gals if this upsets anyone. As I said it's just a second hand comment.

Cheers

I didn't notice any bootlegs, a few second issues and UK issues were played but I have no complaints as they are legitimate issues. Personally I'd rather spend time dancing than checking up on the DJ's and there were some outstanding sets - especially on Sunday evening and the DJ's guys deserve a lot of credit for their outstanding contribution. Struggled on Friday and Saturday to get on the dance floor because it was so busy, wondered whether the Northern room sets could be repeated in a another room a couple of hours later to lighten the pressure on the main room.
Thanks to all the organisers for the event.
Thanks to John, Sean and Nige on Sunday for the blisters on my feet, great music and I was compelled to dance more than is good for the old dogs.

My first Prestatyn and only my second weekender and would have to say it exceeced my expectations, I went intending to hear new stuff to my ears and found the Redemption room where I spent most of my time to be excellent, well done to all who Dj'ed in there..On a couple of points raised above I quite enjoyed browsing the "bazzar" but think it a shame room could not be found for it elsewhere, our time spent in the main room found us standing on every occasion ,obviously more seats would not have guaranteed a seat due to the numbers .As for repeating main room sets not a bad idea in some cases but for me not at the expense of the other smaller rooms losing out on avaliable time, have not the faintest if there is another room somewhere that does not get used.Just the thoughts of a newbie to the weekend scene.
Oh and the Impressions were as everyone seems to agree outstanding

Sound quality. If you pull curtains across during the day, and do sound checks, lo and behold when you pull back the curtains at night you will get a different sound. That is kids stuff!! Also there was very little new in music in the great hall, and repetition- the Stafford set was brilliant Having said that there were one or two excellent sets, not many. How many times was Elijah rockin with soul?
All the upstairs rooms were par excellence.

I took a look at one record seller, and found twenty odd boots in one column-at full price. Also why are people getting booked for the weekend into their chalets to find that 500 wristbands were apparently available to all comers? Which would explain why the floor was heaving. And was there really a ska session? That sounds like last days of Wigan--Spyder was awesome. The quality of drinks was awful. Why couldnt I get a vodka martini? So good and bad in equal measure.. Keep the commercial faith

It is not about what the label is or whether that particular piece of vinyl is worth mega bucks.
its about the floor .. Its about filling floor with people who have paid to listen and dance to good music .. Do they care if it is a pressing or not .. No they don't its only some pretentious Dj On his high horse about what he has or has not got or what he sees someone else playing.
Prestatyn was excellent music and excellent live acts - however the accommodation is total crap and filthy and the food is no better so if they want my money again they will need to sort that in this day and age it isn't acceptable....

A great weekend all round even though I only saw it in staggered glimpses as I was busy filming interviews in a room upstairs most of the time!

I think one of the most significant things for me was seeing a sizable amount of young respectful and energetic people there this year which energized the atmosphere for me.

And I didn't see any bootlegs on the screen on the odd occasions when I looked up there. Just stone solid rare originals. I think there's some mischief-makers out there who just want to be critical of an incredibly successful event!

Few comments from me. Firstly the impressions where as good as it gets. Was great to catch up with people that you tend to lose touch with for one reason or another. Few questions. Why isn't there a seperate area for the market type stalls like there used to be ie in the bandit / fruit machine area. And why was the bar in the main room made to queue from one side when the other bars where as per normal and what happened to the seating area in front of the bar. Promoters over to you. Steve

lots of bootlegs were played.a certain dj springs to mind but wouldnt be nice to say his name.i do not agree with bootlegs.the djs that have paid a lot of money for the real record cannot play it if its been played earlier, even though it was on a boot leg.not fair & not right imo

The Trey J’s - I Found It All In You - We Got A Thing (Going On) - SJ526

The blurb is below...

Out 17th Feb 2014

The Trey J’s: In the late 1960’s James Binford originally from Indianapolis, Indiana and Joseph Smith from Detroit, Michigan who had both by then migrated south to Atlanta, Georgia, formed a vocal duet known as the Trey J’s.

The groups name the Trey J’s is an Americanization “Trey” derived from the French word for the number three “Tres” and the first initial of James and Joseph and their late manager Johnny Glover’s christian names, hence Three J’s.

By the early 1970’s The Trey J’s had become regular performers at Atlanta’s most infamous Black night club ‘The Pink Pussy Cat’. It was while performing at the Pink Pussy Cat that the Trey J’s came into contact with a local record producer by the name of Thomas Fletcher Davis more commonly known as Tee Fletcher. Tee a successful recording artist in his own right with a string of recording for several labels such as Josie, Shurfine, and Tragar had begun his own production company Tee Gem Records.

Jessica Records Article on SKM - Preview

Dave Rimmer passed on word of an article that he has posted on his SKM website after an interview with Curtis Smith.
A few preview clips follow below, for the full meaty article you will need to get yourself over to the SKM website (link to the article at the end of the page)
Preview clips...

As some people will be aware, my fiancé is called Jessica, so it came as no surprise to discover that she was collecting the Jessica label, and that she had also made the connection with the Essica label. There were however, several gaps in the numbering system used by the label, and we were never sure whether that was because we just didn’t know what the missing releases were, or whether they even existed.
After a considerable amount of digging to try and find out what the missing numbers were, we finally made contact with Curtis Smith, and interviewed him by phone last weekend.
Here’s what we found out:
The label is definitely from St Louis, and was owned by a gentleman called Matt McKinney, whose wife was called, you guessed it, Jessica.
Curtis doesn’t really remember too much about Matt McKinney, other than the fact that he was a big friend of Harvey Fuqua, and had ambitions to get into Motown with his recordings. That didn’t happen of course, so I’m still searching for a contact with Matt McKinney. The only possible thing I’ve turned up so far is this recording:
Danright DR115 - Matt McKinney - Ballad of My Lai / Hungry Road - 1970
And as this is a Nashville label, I’m not convinced it’s even the same Matt McKinney.
Unfortunately Curtis was unable to explain why the label name changed from Jessica to Essica either.
So, onto the individual releases:

http://www.soulfulkindamusic.net/artric2.jpg

Jessica 401 - Willie Small - How High Can You Fly / Say You Will - 1965
Firstly, this is Curtis Smith. He wasn’t under contract to Jessica at the time this record was released, so it was put out with the fictitious name of Willie Small. The catalogue number is also interesting as well. At the time this was released Curtis was working at the ‘401’ club in Powderly, Birmingham, Alabama. (I believe the club was owned at the time by John Hayden, an Alabama resident, but unfortunately he passed away in 2012, and his brother Danny Hayden.) That’s how the record came to be released as Jessica 401.
There are actually two different design labels for this release: The first shows Eddie Silvers as the writer, presumably because Curtis couldn’t be associated with it, the second shows, correctly, Curtis Smith
There is also, somewhat surprisingly a Dutch release of this record, although I do have certain doubts regarding its legitimacy.

http://www.soulfulkindamusic.net/artric6.jpg
Curtis Smith is the second from the left in this photo.
Jessica 402 - Rozetta Johnson - That Hurts / It’s Nice To Know — 1965 (Also released on Atlantic 2297)
http://www.soulfulkindamusic.net/artric7.gif
At the same time that Curtis was working at the 401 Club, so was Rozetta Johnson (The correct spelling of her name is Roszetta Johnson), and her single was issued with catalogue number 402 because just up the road from the 401 Club was the 402 Diner !
She was born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and grew up singing in her local church choir. She joined a gospel vocal group, the Violet Harmonettes, and after her parents separated moved to Birmingham, Alabama, (and later McIntosh, Alabama). She started her singing career at the 401 Club, and the release on Jessica was her first recording. Following her stint at the 401 club she was then hired as a featured singer at the A G Gaston Lounge & Supper Club, subsequently toured as part of the Bill Doggett Revue, and then recorded several singles for the Clinton Moon’s ClinTone label
CT-001 - A Woman's Way / Mine Was Real - 1970
CT-003 - Who Are You Gonna Love / I Can Feel My Love Comin' Down - 1971
CT-006 - Holding The Losing Hand / Chained And Bound - 1971
CT-007 - Can't You Just See Me / To Love Somebody - 1972
CT-008 - How Can You Love Something You Never Had / Personal Woman - 1972
Curtis has no knowledge of how the Jessica release also came to be released on Atlantic, however, as the ClinTone singles are all distributed by either Atco or Atlantic, and have Atlantic Master numbers, there must be some connection there.
By the late Seventies Roszetta had left the music scene and followed a career in education.
Later in life, she returned to singing, primarily as a Gospel singer, and went onto international success using her married name Roszetta Johnson Scovil.
Sadly Roszetta passed away on the 24th March, 2011....
article clipped and end preview

http://www.soulfulkindamusic.net/artric30.gif

The ‘For: “Wes”’ track was arranged By The Soul Merchants, written by Eddie Silvers, Dawson & Hill, and produced by Eddie Silvers, The ‘Light My Fire’ track was conducted by him.
There was also a release on Unisfere that he appeared on (and wrote the flip side to)
UniSFERE 700 - Robert, Ron, & Eddie - Love Potion #9 / Robert & Ron - I Ain’t Finish yet - 1969.
So that’s it, the story of a little label in St Louis that released seven singles, recorded by artists from as far afield as St Louis, Atlanta, Washington, Birmingham, and New York.

Saun & Starr - Hot Spot - Daptone Pre Order 45

Daptone seem to have a winner with this upcoming 45

Due out at the end of this month, this is simply a tremendous début 45 from duo Saun and Starr via Daptone Records

Here's the soundcloud

https://soundcloud.com/daptone-records/saunandstarrhotshot

Blurb:

Though they are currently in the studio putting finishing touches on their debut full length album, two of their tunes have thankfully been committed to seven inch wax. The A-Side, ‘Hot Shot’ is a feel-good shaker that features the inexplicable range of Miss Starr Duncan Lowe, backed staunchly by the “Baddest Band in the Land”, The Dap-Kings. The flip, ‘Gonna Make Time’, showcases Saundra “Saun” Williams’ smooth, smoky vocal, atop a bed of deep low-rider soul.
If this 45 ain’t your bag, please go lay down on a busy street. There’s no hope for you.

Lee Fields and The Expressions - New Album & Dates Annouced

Word just in from Truth and Soul Records of NY about Lee Fields and the Expressions next album and upcoming USA/Europe tour dates

Titled "Emma Jean" and announced to be released in June this year via Truth and Soul Records (see below for the T and S site link)

Clips from the blurb below...

Coming at a time when many new artists are trying to emulate the soul and swagger of the 1960s, Mr. Fields showers us with authenticity on the 11-track set, highlighted by first single “Magnolia.”

Hear the refreshed cover of the JJ Cale track that embodies the late, great American singer-songwriter and the Tulsa Sound he helped create.

https://soundcloud.com/truthandsoulrecords/magnolia

There's a sharper wisdom in the songwriting--from the having loved, lost, and learned vibe of “Don't Leave Me This Way,” backed by crooning guitar and wailing horns, to the sophisticated arrangements and studio acumen that's pared with Lee's straight forward sincerity in “Just Can't Win.”

Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys wrote “Paralyzed,” and having Emma Jean mixed and partially recorded at his Nashville studio, country soul and bluesy rock are immediately noticeable. It brings a different kind of strut to the album, but Fields--born and raised in North Carolina--is right at home with the Southern soul sound.

In fact, it feels like a natural progression: an organic, refreshingly pure next step...

Upcoming Events

Mar 12: Lee Fields & The Expressions, Austin, Texas
Mar 13: Lee Fields & The Expressions, Austin, Texas

George Clinton Interview on Factmag

Factmag features a current London based interview with Mr Clinton
A quick preview ...

....sessions with Rudimental and Joss Stone, hanging out with Prince and Jalal Mansur Nuriddin (of The Last Poets), recording a whole album direct to vinyl, and chowing down on a chicken doner in a Goldhawk Road kebab shop, Dr. Funkenstein found time to impart his (other-)worldly wisdom at a Q&A session held at Shoreditch House, at a masterclass for young producers at Metropolis Studios, and over a can of ginger beer with...

...mother was a big Louis Jordan fan,” he says, humming the lead sax line from Jordan’s 1945 jump blues cut ‘Caldonia’. “Living in Virginia, what you heard on the radio was country and western —” and here he breaks into the refrain from Slim Willet’s ‘Don’t Let the Sun Get In Your Eyes’, “then R&B stuff, you heard on records.” Louis Jordan, along with Muddy Waters, Lightning Hopkins, and Elmore James was the music Clinton’s mum listened to when she was getting ready to go out...

Soulfinger - A Life love and Passion Motown Era Project

A heartfelt artistic statement paying tribute to the great songwriters of the classic “Motown” era.

The idea was to highlight and re-record B-sides of lesser known soul music gems from the late 60ties up to mid of 70ties, inviting a variety of amazing artists to perform on one song each:

Leela James - Teedra Moses - Jaguar Wright - Kathy Sledge - Syleena Johnson - Anthony David - Truth Hurts - Martin Luther - Joi - Stephanie McKay - Antonique Smith - Angela Johnson - Ben L’Oncle Soul - Sara Devine - Milla Brune - Mizzy

We want to put this labor-of-love out into the world in a very different manner than how it’s usually done.

We have come up with (we hope) absolutely extraordinary luxury packaging for this super-limited, hand-numbered collector’s item. This will not be released in digital form, no iTunes, no Amazon, no Spotify.

For our limited edition run, we picked Kickstarter as platform:

KICKSTARTER CAMPAIGN LINK

Clips/info/samples etc via this page

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/soulfinger/soulfinger-life-love-and-passion

Every unit will be uniquely identified by its serial number.

NOTE: The serial on the prototype used in our photoshoot uses the name of our company ("Soulfood Music Group"), on the final product we will change this to:

Soulfinger - Life, Love & Passion -- Nº: 000X

Full list of participating artists:

Leela James, Soul Train Music Award & NAACP Image Award nominee

Teedra Moses, signed to Rick Ross' Maybach Music Group/Warner Bros.

Jaguar Wright, legendary singer, once backing vocalist of Jay Z

Kathy Sledge, (“Sister Sledge/We Are Family”)

Joi, lead-singer of Raphael Saadiq's Lucy Pearl (“Lucy Pearl/Lucy Pearl”)

Truth Hurts, (“Truth Hurts/Addictive”)

Anthony David, Grammy Awards nominee, reputedly First Lady Michelle Obama's favorite artist

Syleena Johnson, Grammy Awards nominee (Kayne West - "All Falls Down"), daughter of Syl Johnson, TV One “R&B Divas”

Martin Luther, Golden Globe nominee (“Across The Universe”), collaborations with The Roots

Stephanie McKay, toured the world with Kelis, collaborations with Mos Def, Talib Kweli

Antonique Smith, Golden Globe nominee (“Across The Universe”), played the role of Faith Evans in the film "Notorius"

Angela Johnson, collaborations with Frank McComb, Eric Roberson, Rahsaan Patterson

Sara Devine, backing vocalist Mary J Blige

Ben L’Oncle Soul, Motown signature and France’s soul music super star

Mizzy (“Soul:ID”)

Milla Brune, Belgian shooting star

MUSICIANS:

Working on classics, it was important to us to have an identifiable sound all across the album and so we decided to work with a steady band of musicians, all having an impressive track-record:

Steady backing band:

Gene Lake - drums [Maxwell/D'Angelo/MeShell Ndegeocello]

Jonathan Maron - bass [Groove Collective/Maxwell/India.Arie]

Selan Lerner - keys [Nile Rogers/DJ Spinna/Kanye West]

Mike Ciro - git [Janet Jackson/Raheem DeVaughn/Mariah Carey]

Chops Horns [sugarhill Records/The Police/Alicia Keys]

Recommended New Film: 20 Feet From Stardom

I've just seen a screening of a brilliant documentary featuring some great soul sisters that is nominated for next week's Oscars and gets a UK release in a couple of weeks.
It's called '20 Feet From Stardom' and is about backing singers who performed with major rock stars (plus Stevie Wonder and MJ), but of course there are a few familiar names in there for soul fans. It primarily centres around Darlene Love (Crystals). The cast also includes Merry Clayton, Tata Vega, Gloria Jones, Lisa Fischer, Patti Austin, Susaye Green (Supremes) and Mable John and I also discovered that Edna Wright was Darlene Love's sister!
Claudia Lennear (Ikettes) was at the screening and did a Q&A at the end.
Some great vocals and if you enjoyed Standing in the Shadows you're gonna love this.....seriously recommended.

An Afternoon with Mary Wilson of The Supremes in Kilburn

Thought this might be of interest to some, given her Dreamgirls book success on screen on theatre it might not be as much show and tell as the original book, but hopefull will follow the book rather than the showbiz interpretations. I have seen this lady before and she can certainly sing.

Sounds a great afternoon out for anyone that can make it

I assume it is based on the book as below, which is one of the best biographies I have read.

added by site

Join us for a very special afternoon of music and conversation with Mary Wilson, a founding member of one of the most successful female singing groups in recording history — The Supremes. SInce the 1960s, Mary Wilson and The Supremes have brought the sound of Motown into the homes of millions across the globe and simultaneously advanced civil rights by breaking down barriers in the entertainment industry.

While growing up in Detroit’s Brewster Projects, Mary’s love for singing blossomed when she befriended Florence Ballard, Betty McGlown and Diana Ross at age 13. Four decades and 40 albums later, what once started as a dream has exceeded beyond Wilson’s wildest imagination.

Wilson has written a best-selling autobiography, performed on stage and screen, lectured and toured the world, and continues to be looked up to as a singer who set the standard for females in the recording industry.

Kindle - Southern Soul-Blues (Music in American Life)

Here's another Kindle highlight
This one is titled Southern Soul-Blues (Music in American Life) and was released last year but as the kindle edition is now available for £1.12 uk wise and is billed as 344 pages, thought maybe a highlight be of some interest
Here's the blurb...
Publisher: University of Illinois Press; 1st Edition edition (12 Mar 2013)
Review
"Southern Soul-Blues takes on a woefully unexamined topic to make a significant contribution to studies in African American popular music. David Whiteis is a conscientious researcher, an astute observer, and a superlative writer."--Robert Pruter, author of Chicago Soul and Doowop:
The Chicago Scene
Product Description
Attracting passionate fans primarily among African American listeners in the South, southern soul draws on such diverse influences as the blues, 1960s-era seep soul, contemporary R & B, neosoul, rap, hip-hop, and gospel. Aggressively danceable, lyrically evocative, and fervidly emotional, southern soul songs often portray unabashedly carnal themes, and audiences delight in the performer-audience interaction and communal solidarity at live performances.
Examining the history and development of southern soul from its modern roots in the 1960s and 1970s, David Whiteis highlights some of southern soul's most popular and important entertainers and provides first-hand accounts from the clubs, show lounges, festivals, and other local venues where these performers work. Profiles of veteran artists such as Denise LaSalle, the late J. Blackfoot, Latimore, and Bobby Rush--as well as contemporary artists T. K. Soul, Ms. Jody, Sweet Angel, Willie Clayton, and Sir Charles Jones--touch on issues of faith and sensuality, artistic identity and stereotyping, trickster antics, and future directions of the genre.

Melvin Davis In Vogue Magazine Feature

A great article and some interesting footage as part of the Shinola project on the link to Vogue on line below !
“Detroit’s full of characters,” says photographer Bruce Weber, who, eight years ago, corralled a sampling of the city’s talented eccentrics for a major photo portfolio for W magazine titled, "Welcome to Motor City." Now he’s shot and filmed an entirely new batch of wonderfully singular personalities from the city for Shinola, the growing watch and leather goods company aiming to revitalize manufacturing in Detroit.

100 Club Allnighter Tonight - Canceled

Sat Feb 15th 2014 all nighter cancelled

Due to a combination of unfortunate events but mainly due to a licensing problem we have had to cancel tonight's event.

Missing the January date threw me and the club, independently of each other, and we did not apply for the license in time. This would have been salvageable if it had not been for the licensing authorities announcing a visit this weekend and them not turning up on Friday so it would have been tonight and we therefore would have had to shut at 3 am, leaving a lot of nighter attendees frustrated.

To make matters worse, I contracted gastro enteritis at 1am this morning and would not have been able to run the event and Keith Money rang up from Scotland yesterday saying he could not get down due to the weather. Others have said the weather would have stopped them attending. Rather than run a patched up dance from 11pm-3am I have decided to cancel it. If anyone has run up any pre-booked train expenses or hotels I will refund some or all of the money depending on circumstances.

Please pass this message on to anyone who might be attending

Inner City Soul Club Returns In A New London Venue!

We just want to thank those who have continued to support us since the creation of Inner City Soul club last March and to announce that we have moved to a new and fantastic venue in London - Duke's. The new venue is a short walk from Liverpool St. and Aldgate Stations, and is complete with a large wooden dance floor and incredible sound system.

We have a cracking line up for our next event, which will be running till 6 AM - Lars Bulnheim (flying over all the way from Hamburg), Marco Santucci and Kitch - so we hope to see some of you down there for what promises to be another night of amazing Rare Soul!

Over the past year we have had some fantastic and memorable events, with some of the best DJ’s from Europe including Edu Domingo, Laurent Reus, Malayka and Matt Fox and many others from the UK including Adam Torel, Callum Simpson, Rich Evans and the Va Va Voom boys.

As we are on the younger end of the soul spectrum (Tomas is 22 and James 29) our focus has always been on promoting an event which both appeals to dedicated soul fans but also focuses on creating an atmosphere which encourages a younger generation to enjoy this fantastic music. Consistent with this ideal we have always sought out DJ’s who we believe to be exciting and play the best across the board 60s and 70s soul records out there!

Here are the current favourite spins from the two residents to give you a flavour of the club...

James Pogson:

Ishola Muhammad — “Open Up Your Heart” (Guess)
Little Willie Johnson — “Loneliness” (Vendella’s)
John Harris and the Soul Sayers — “Hangin’ In” (Kerston)
Harvey Scales & the Seven Seas — “Trying To Survive” (Magic Touch)
Mellow Madness — “Save The Youth” (Mega)

Tomas McGrath:

The Soul Injection — “Stay Off The Moon” (Accent)
The Underground Express — “I Never Found A Girl” (U.G.E.)
Kelly & The Soul Explosions — “Talking About My Baby’s Love” (Dynamite)
Charlene & The Soul Serenaders - “Can You Win” (Volt)
Paul Burton — “So Very Hard To Make It (Without You)” (Music-Go-Round)

Once again thanks for the support!

The Guardian Does Popcorn

A look at the 'Popcorn Scene' could be read in the Guardian yesterday and while its a mainstream take it read quite well to me.
A few preview clips...
Belgium's 'Popcorn': the last underground music scene in Europe
Antwerp's answer to northern soul has a drowsy, decadent vibe and its DJs favour eclecticism, jive music and playing records at the wrong speed. Bob Stanley gets into its strange groove
... DJ plays Eartha Kitt, the Skatalites, something that sounds like a northern soul record at the wrong speed. The atmosphere is friendly but exclusive, and the musical mood dark and opulent. This is a Belgian Popcorn club.
... really do have the wrong idea about Belgium," says Bill Brewster, the author of Last Night a DJ Saved My Life. "Musically, it's been far more innovative than people give it credit for, possibly due to the push and pull of the Flemish and French split..

worth reading/watching, although like the northern scene I suspect you really need to live it to fully get it. Having said that I have come to really enjoy a lot of Popcorn tunes in the last 15 years or so.

The very first Manchester European Soul weekender started off with a popcorn day. It was fantastic.

The article mentions the "Kingpin" in Sheffield, this is a miss-print, it should read "King Bee".

Let's hope, the popcorn scene will not be detected and exploited by hipsters and fashion victims 😄
However, I like to mix up popcorn with Norhern Soul and Rockabilly - just good "Oldies": 😉

Lifeline Soul Club: The Real Deal Rare Soul All-Nighter is Ten Years Old

Lifeline Soul Club: The Real Deal Rare Soul All-Nighter is Ten Years Old.

21st February, 2004 saw Andy Dyson and Mick H with myself doing the promoting bring to the scene the Lifeline Real Deal Rare Soul All-nighter too a full house at the much missed Sheridan’s in Dewsbury.

Move forward to 22th February 2014 and we celebrate 10 years of Rare Soul All-nighters. Time really does fly because it doesn't seem like ten years since Nick Stevenson kicked off the first night to a packed club eager to hear the best the scene had to offer. Since that night a who’s who of the soul world from around the UK and Europe have graced the decks at Lifeline playing to eager crowds a fantastic array of rare soul music. I’d attempt to name all the guests but I know for sure I would upset someone by forgetting them.

Since Sheridan's, the Club has had a couple of other venues since settling in at our current home of the The Brookfields Club, better known to most as The Stables to most. In-between we resided at The Ye Olde Bell near Retford, a top quality venue I personally wish we could go back to. We hosted what were in my own opinion two of the best weekenders I’ve ever attended and many others said the same. We then moved to The Fox, off the A1 at Colsterworth which just didn’t work, too out of the way for many. We then got the chance of moving too the Stables, a top quality all-nighter venue with large dance floor and balcony.

Back to the present. Reluctant DJ and top collector Nick Stevenson returns to help us celebrate 10 soulful years.

Baghdad’s (and the South Coast occasionally) Russ Vickers is flying in to make his debut behind the Lifeline decks. A long time collector, Dj and promoter, we are looking forward to what Russ has to offer on the night. We will hopefully be welcoming the return of Soul Sam to the decks after his recent serious illness. As usual Butch, Andy Dyson, Mick H, Cliff Steele and myself (Chalky) will be playing the very best in Rare Soul from the 60’s, some 70’s and knowing Sam something more recent. To see out our tenth anniversary will be Nottingham’s Rob Smith.

Everyone involved with Lifeline, Andy and Mick, Myself, Mandy and Wendy, would like to thank everyone who has helped us reach our tenth anniversary. All the DJ’s, the record dealers in the balcony, the door staff for looking after you all and most important of all everyone who has paid their hard earned money to come through the door to dance, tap your feet or stroke your chin, without you there would be no club!!

Moving forward a little, unfortunately the Stables Club for April and June was already booked for weddings when we tried to book our dates again. After attempts to secure another venue were beginning to look fruitless Mace came to the rescue with the offer to put on a co-promotion at the newly refurbished Sutherland Road Community project, better known to most as Bidds.

A link to some photos before and after at the refurbished club…..

The venue has been transformed in to a two room entertainment venue. Seating removed and replaced, brand new dancefloor, toilets……you won’t recognise the place!!

Lifeline for the two months mentioned have agreed with the top R&B Club POW WOW to put on a joint promotion. So Lifeline will be in the main room and Pow Wow will be in the second. we are hoping to try and recreate the spirit of Sheridan’s when the top soul clubs from around the country all promoted under one roof. You will hear in the main room the usual Rarest of the rare, forgotten quality oldies from a £5 to £15000 and in Room 2 Pow Wow will treat you to the very best in R&B, Rhythm and Soul, Boogaloo and much more besides. Full details will follow in due course.

We hope to see you all there…we will be back at the Stables in August.

Do you know Dave I think my memory is f**ked.

just do a bit of research and it would appear we were at the Fox before the Bell, 10th December 2005, the first one at the Fox.

We were still at the Fox in June 2006 but must have moved in August or October that year? I can't find an event listing for first Ye Olde Bell night so will have to get old flyers out. Pretty sure the first weekender would be 2007 and the second and last 2008 and moving to the Stables that year. 2009, April we were at thenStables as i had a broken Elbow then and been out of hospital long and it is the only night I have missed.

Will try and do a proper timeline of events at the weekend.

i'd love another weekender at the Bell, best I have been too.

Surviving The Decades: 8 soul groups journey through their 50 year careers

Surviving The Decades: 8 soul groups journey through their 50 year careers by Steve Whittaker
I just stumbled on this recent release via Amazons Kindle store
Kindle Price: £3.58 includes VAT* & free wireless delivery via Amazon Whispernet
Length: 309 pages (estimated)
The online preview below seems flawed but you can get one sent to your kindle before buying.
Press Blurb
Surviving The Decades is eight short biographies of soul music groups who have battled to stay in the music industry, their road has often been dogged by bankruptcy, false promises, racism, and non-payment of royalties.
They learnt their craft the hard way, which no TV reality show can ever teach you. 50 years is a long time in a business which takes no prisoners. Success usually came after years on the "chittlin" circuit and travelling hundreds of miles, but then to adapt to new musical trends and technology, now that to me, takes some doing.

Ady Croasdell - Play Box Mix

A Sunday Afternoon ear treat
Thanks are earned by Kieran Lockyear for putting this all together
Here's the words from the Mixcloud post...
Big thanks to Ady Croasdell for the 66th "Straight From The Play Box" mix.
Ady Croasdell aka Harboro Horace was an aspiring mod in 1966 when he fell in love with music of all kinds. Though mainly going to underground and psychedelic gigs, he loved black music (initially country blues) and heard classic Stax, Atlantic and Motown singles played at the local dances where his Market Harborough mod/skinhead gang went.
An “Old Soul” all nighter in a disused railway station in the middle of the countryside (not even near the village), which he happened on by chance in 1969, lead to a love and interest in Mid-60s soul sides. He started collecting, then dealing (records not pills), then promoting then DJing, then record compiling for Kent in 1982. Kent Records has been running for 30 years now.
He has run the 6TS at the 100 Club soul all nighters for over 30 years and the 6TS Northern Soul Weekender in Cleethorpes for over 20. See Website for more details: http://www.6ts.info/

September Jones in a couple of weeks, toussaint McCall in a few months and I'm still finalising plans on some of the others. I didn't do this as a Northern mix, there's more R and B and Popcorn than I'd normally play at the 100 Club

Anna Gordy Gaye, the ex-wife of late soul legend Marvin Gaye and the older sister of Motown record label founder Berry Gordy Jr., died in Los Angeles on Friday at the age of 92, the family publicist said.

"She died today at her Los Angeles home. She passed away from natural causes. They discovered her body at 3:00 a.m.," said Maureen O'Connor, executive vice president of publicists Rogers & Cowan.

Anna Ruby Gordy was born in Milledgeville, Georgia, located in Baldwin County, Georgia, the third-eldest of eight children of Berry Gordy Sr. (Berry Gordy II) and Bertha Ida (née Fuller) Gordy. Shortly after her birth, Gordy's father moved up to Detroit from Georgia to seek a better life for his family and to escape any hint of racial tension due to a business deal, later sending for his family after settling down. Gordy, like most of her family, became a successful businesswoman, starting out as a co-operator of the photo concession at Detroit's Flame Show Bar in the early fifties with sister Gwen, later starting her own namesake label, Anna Records with Gwen and Billy Davis in 1958, a year before her brother Berry launched Tamla Records, later to be a subsidiary for Motown.

The label would later be noted as the distributor of Tamla's first national hit record, "Money (That's What I Want)". Other artists such as David Ruffin, Marvin Gaye and Joe Tex also recorded for the label, which lasted until 1961, when Berry Gordy absorbed the label and its artists. Gordy then joined her brother's label and started the Artist Development class, becoming its president. Gordy also joined Motown's staff team as a songwriter. Gordy's biggest success as a songwriter came in the late 1960s and early 1970s, co-writing two major hits for Motown group The Originals, alongside her then-husband Marvin Gaye, including "Baby, I'm For Real" and "The Bells", which also featured Anna's niece Iris, as a co-writer. In 1971, Gordy's husband released the acclaimed What's Going On, which featured two songs co-composed by Gordy, including "Flyin' High (In the Friendly Sky)" and "God Is Love".

The song's musical instrumentation was co-composed by Gordy and was used in another Gaye-Gordy composition, "Just to Keep You Satisfied", which Gaye produced versions by The Monitors and The Originals before overdubbing the Originals' version for his own version on 1973's Let's Get It On. However on Gaye's version, the singer completely rewrote the lyrics and based the song on the demise of a marriage. Gordy left Motown in 1979 and retired from the music business

It was only a couple of years ago or so that Elton John was hanging with the Hannibal after recording a cover of his 'Hymn No. 5' (never too late to pick up some tips Sir Reg)

Voodoo Mademoiselles - Lev and September Jones

Five months ago a young Northern Soul fan was filmed by her mother dancing along to an excellent but very obscure 60s soul recording on the steps of the Yury Dolguruky Monument in Moscow. 50,000 You Tube hits and lots of enthusiastic, kind words encouraged the girls to repeat the stunt, this time in their home town of Bristol, to the prescient Pied Piper production of ‘Give Me Lots Of Lovin’’ recorded in Detroit by Freddy Butler. The hits doubled.

Another selection of quirkily-set dance arenas were used for the next four great slabs of vintage rare soul and then the big one. Set at a nondescript Bristol street corner, Lev begins grooving to Pharrel Williams ‘Happy’ which breaks effortlessly into the Northern Soul classic of the same title by Chicago group Velvet Hammer. That captivating video went viral and has so far notched up more than half a million views.

Slightly taken aback by the success of their modest works, Lev’s mum Eve, a 100 Club Northern all-nighter, die-hard back in the 1980s, contacted me about getting some recognition for the artists and music makers on the tracks they were using. The licensing details on some of the music was not always clear-cut and the publishing details could also be problematic, so I suggested they work with an Ace Records controlled track where we could cover them for any licensing eventualities and get recognition to the right people.

Of the suggested recordings Lev, who seems to have a taste for the rarer end of the soul spectrum, chose a track by legendary Detroit artist September Jones of which there is only one known acetate copy-featured at the start of the video. Like the Freddy Butler recording used in the second video it was a Pied Piper production and Ace had made a deal with original Funk Brother Jack Ashford and his Pied Piper partner’s successor so the fabulous 1967 recording is featured in the latest installment, graced by Lev’s dance moves and a Spanish brass band.

The recording has become hugely popular at the 100 Club all-nighters and now Ace have made the previously unissued track immediately available on download and there is a 7” vinyl Pied Piper single being released in a few weeks as a taster for the 2nd CD volume of the Pied Piper story.

Roy Roberts - Thinking About You 7" Out Now!

Soulstacks Records latest offerings

After what seems like an age between signing the contract with Roy and taking the box of finished 45s off the courier man's hands, at last these are here!
Those who've had pre-orders placed for months - yours are going out today. *Lesson learned: If you can't hold it, don't 'sold' it!

You can PM or (ideally) order at the site here

Roy Roberts - Thinking About You/Let's Wrap Up Tonight Baby (Country Star) £8

‘Thinking About You’ is a fantastic dancer that rides along on a groove underpinned by bubbling percussion and spacey synths and with no 7"³ release at the time, it’s the reason that soul people have been hunting down a mainly Country album since it became more widely know a couple of years back.

For the flip side of our 45 we’ve chosen a later moment from Roy’s back catalogue, the 1979 disco soul of ‘Let’s Wrap Up Tonight Baby’: a homemade, slightly minimal four minutes plus of raw dancefloor grooves designed to keep the feet in perpetual motion.
Soulstacks Records are delighted to offer this debut 7" single courtesy of the talents of North Carolina’s finest, Mr Roy Roberts. We hope you enjoy!

Cool Article On Wilton Crump

Here is a cool article my friend wrote on singer/songwriter Wilton Crump (who you might know from his obscure sweet soul single "Give your love to me" on his own Olive Branch label):
http://beltmag.com/gary-indianas-fabulous-footnote/
The article gives a nice insight into the Gary, IN soul scene and the town itself -- birthplace of the Jackson Five and the doowop group the Spaniels. Vee Jay was mining talent from there in the '50s and '60s (and a lot of soul groups came from there). Definitely an interesting read.
added by site
Preview clips
“Mellow Tone Studio, Wilton E. Crump, Director & Arranger” reads the ornate cursive lettering of a hand-painted sign affixed to the wood paneling in the Crump family basement. Beneath it sits an upright piano weighed down by a half-century of show posters, string arrangements, and newspaper clippings documenting a young (and a not-so-young) man sharing stages with his musical heroes. “You want to know, what ‘Mellow Tone Studio’ was?” chuckles the man calligraphically immortalized in the sign’s bold red lettering. “This is it!”
In 1967, Crump left Gary to study music theory and education at Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Mo. Though 300 miles from home, Crump found inspiration when a familiar sound became ubiquitous around campus. Years earlier, Gordon Keith and four millworker colleagues had formed the Steeltown record label. The ambitious Keith released the Jackson Five’s first record in 1967, and “Big Boy” became a Midwestern regional hit. Soon, Crump heard his former rivals’ voices at every Jeff City party.

Nice read Bob. Wonder though if Wilton Crump is related at all to Michael Crump who was co-composer with Ronnie McNeir on a number of excellent Ronnie McNeir recordings from the 80's ?

Joe Evans Of Carnival Records Obituary

In the mid 1990s musician and record producer, Joe Evans, moved from his New Jersey home to enjoy retirement in Richmond, Virginia. He decided to study the history of black music at Virginia Commonwealth University. After a brief conversation with the lecturer Dr Christopher Brooks, Joe lent him “A Carnival Of Soul” Volume One the first of three Kent CDs of music from Joe’s Carnival label released in the UK.

At the next class, after reading the CD booklet notes, Dr Brooks announced to the other students that there had been a mistake; he should be sitting alongside them while Mr Evans taught the class! That relationship would eventually lead the pair to write Joe’s autobiography Follow Your Heart.

Joe had a remarkable career. The highlights included playing alto saxophone in the bands of Jay McShann, Lionel Hampton, Cab Calloway, Louis Armstrong and Fats Waller among many others. He was a regular member of the house bands at such legendary black music venues as the Savoy Ballroom and the Apollo Theatre at the very height of their fame; entertaining the dancers and backing the likes of Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Sam Cooke, Jackie Wilson, Ruth Brown and Clyde McPhatter.

After a spell as a record promoter for Ray Charles’ Tangerine label and running his own early 60s R&B label, Cee Jay, with Clarence ‘Jack Rags’ Johnson, he went back on the road with the Choker Campbell Orchestra on the very first Motown Revue. They backed Mary Wells, Marvin Gaye and the Supremes at the start of their illustrious careers, thus helping create a new sound for the nation’s youth.

Having tasted the excitement of the independent record business, he was hungry for more and teamed up with his old boss, band-leader Paul Williams, to form Carnival Records in 1962.

Originally based in New York, by the time of their big hit with the Manhattans’, ‘I Wanna Be (You’re Everything)’, Paul had left. By the issue of Barbara Brown’s ‘So In Love’ (Carnival 508), the label’s address had switched to his New Jersey home. There he ran the business with his wife Ann taking charge of the mundane but vital office work. She helped groom the acts and acted like a mom for many of the teenage singers. The music continued to be recorded in New York studios but with a younger nucleus of musicians which included guitarist Eric Gale, drummer Bernard ‘Pretty’ Purdie and bass player Jimmy Tyrell, instead of the big band stalwarts Williams had used on the early recordings.

The success of the Manhattans dominated the mid-60s releases. When they weren’t recording hits they were helping on background vocals with Barbara Brown and writing songs for their friends and protégés the Lovettes, Phil Terrell, Norma Jenkins and Harry Caldwell. The Manhattans’ sound, which became the Carnival sound, was very much based in doo wop and its inherent strong, simple melodies. The group was blessed with two superb songwriters, Winfred ‘Blue’ Lovett and Edward ‘Sonny’ Bivens. To have witnessed the guys sing at their creative peak must have been a great experience.

Needless to say it was Joe Evans’ musical knowledge, experience and talent that got the sound down so well. Apart from his entrepreneurial skills and musical vision, his own songs and collaborations with other writers and singers were of a very high quality.

By 1969 the Manhattans had left Carnival to record for the King subsidiary De Luxe. Their potential successors Lee Williams and the Cymbals had also moved on. Joe didn’t find an adequate replacement until 1970 when the Pretenders, a three guys, one girl outfit, cut a rousing, uptempo version of ‘I Wanna Be’ that wowed the dancefloors of the UK’s Northern Soul scene when “discovered” by those DJs a handful of years later.

The distinctive Carnival label has been revered by UK 60s soul music lovers since the first copies reached these shores. Prior to the Pretenders popularity here, a four-piece girl group called the Lovettes had, unknown to them, scored a belated dancefloor hit with the scorching ‘Little Miss Soul’, a track that the fans would have called a “monster sound” in the Northern Soul clubs of the early 70s. This song, though written by Blue Lovett, was more in the Motown than the Carnival mould. Adrenaline-powered and feisty, it was tailor-made for Northern Soul all-nighters, where dancers could let themselves go to the Detroit-inspired beat and revel in the glorious harmonies of the sassy girl group. Other cherished tracks for the retro dancers of the UK included the Topics ‘Hey Girl (Where Are You Going)’ and the Metrics ‘Wishes’ both released on the tiny Chadwick subsidiary and now fetching hundreds of dollars to collectors when located.

Local school teacher Phil Terrell had two great 45s on the label including the in-demand ‘Love Has Passed Me By’, Norma Jenkins’ ‘Me, Myself And I’ is a beautiful number as is Barbara Brown’s ‘So In Love’ and the rest of the Lovettes, Pretenders and Lee Williams & The Cymbals sides-that’s without counting the fabulous Manhattans. The Carnival label was a guarantee of soul music excellence; drop a needle on any of the singles and it is going to be a listening pleasure. Kent have issued four 24 track CDs, a vinyl album, both Manhattans LPs on one CD and dotted countless other Carnival gems about on Various Artists compilations over the thirty years we have worked with Joe and lately the Westwood Music Group.

That project began in the early ‘80s when I flew in to Newark to meet up with Joe for tape research and an interview. I landed just as the Eastern Seaboard was being hit by its worst snow storm for decades. That did not deter Joe and his beautiful and charming wife Annie from driving their big old sedan over several miles of icy roads to meet this total stranger. The journey back to theirs was fun with the car skidding and sliding along serenely. We stopped for lunch at a “surf ‘n’ turf” where Joe and I found we had a shared love of good food. Joe was already taking several pills for his health and Annie was concerned for him, but Joe’s charm and his impish sense of fun earned him a good meal. Eventually living to three years short of a century, I guess he read it about right.

That cold spell continued and nobody fancied another slide-a-thon to get me to my hotel so of course the lovely pair offered me the spare room, another good feed and an early start to work the next day. Apart from the priceless tapes and beautiful studio photographs of his acts, Joe showed me two fully signed programmes from the very first Motortown Revues that he played with. He told me stories about playing with Louis Armstrong, performing with John Coltrane and Charlie Parker shortly prior to Parker converting to Bebop. He recalled his times backing the big stars at the Apollo and Savoy, chuckling at stories about Satchmo and how Jackie Wilson jumped off the stage at the Apollo and knocked out three loudmouths who had called him a faggot, all in the instrumental break of the song. Annie treated me like family and a few years later I was happy to attend his 80th birthday party and present him with an award from Ace Records in Europe specifically for his achievements in soul music.

It was very sad that he lost Annie a few years later but he soldiered on and I’m sure he continued to entertain, amuse and enlighten through his later years.

The world should salute Joe, and Ady too for bringing it's attention to the beauty of the Carnival label. For me, the greatest music label ever. Trancendental! and I never really properly appreciated it until that series of cds was released. Track after track of otherworldly ....heaven!

Thank you Joe. And thank you Ady. ( And what a beautiful obituary; which other Northern promoters have shown that level of love for our music?)
