Mary Wells - (Artist Of The Week)

Artist of the Week revisits the career of Mary Wells
Mary Wells Biography (Wikipedia)
Mary Esther Wells (May 13, 1943 – July 26, 1992) was an American singer who helped to define the emerging sound of Motown in the early 1960s. Along with the Supremes, the Miracles, the Temptations, and the Four Tops, Wells was said to have been part of the charge in black music onto radio stations and record shelves of mainstream America, "bridging the color lines in music at the time."
With a string of hit singles composed mainly by Smokey Robinson, including "The One Who Really Loves You"", "Two Lovers" (1962), the Grammy-nominated "You Beat Me to the Punch" (1962) and her signature hit, "My Guy" (1964), she became recognized as "The Queen of Motown" until her departure from the company in 1964, at the height of her popularity. She was one of Motown's first singing superstars...

New MD Records 45 Release - Karla Denning & Dynamic Siblings

NEW RELEASE ON MD RECORDS!!!
 KARLA DENNING - I BEAR WITNESS/DYNAMIC SIBLINGS - I BEAR WITNESS - MD 103
Joe Stevenson was born in 1930 in North Philly, and from a young age was passionate about music, graduating from playing & writing to producing, whilst holding down two jobs in the post office and as a school teacher. By the end of 1960, Joe had built a studio – Imperial Sound Studios at 447 N. 60th St, Philadelphia and was putting out 45’s on his own “Pentagon” label, and from 1965, in association with partners, Bill Lucas and Ed Kelley, was producing and putting out releases on the “Del Val” label.

MD records, in association with Joe Stevenson bring you two tracks, recorded at Imperial Sound Studios that sadly did not make it to vinyl at the time. Vince Apollo (Marvin Brown) had recorded, and released “I Bear Witness” on Joe’s “Pentagon” label in 1967, but had also cut a duet version with his sister Connie, as the “Dynamic Siblings”, which never made it past the acetate stage until now!!!

Coupled with this, we have Karla Denning’s “Funky” take on the “Vince Apollo” tune, recorded in 1971 and again, not getting past the acetate stage until now!!
Just a heads up, first class postage costs have been increased by Royal Mail, prices below now reflect this.
As usual the singles are £10 each and postage first class recorded in the UK is £2.70 for 1 to 3 singles. Europe and RoW on request.
Payment is via PayPal friends and family, so 1 single to UK would be £12.70, 2 singles £22.70, 3 singles £32.70.
If paying goods and services please add 5%, so for example, one single would be £13.35, 2 would be £23.84 etc.
PayPal address is d.parker299@btinternet.com

Heywood Civic Centre - Last One 1 June 2019

This event started up in 1995 so it is one of the longest running, same venue Soul nites in the North. I started djing there in 1996 and I haven't missed one month of playing Motown , Soul and Northern Soul to really fantastic appreciative crowds over all of those years. Unfortunately Link4life who manage the Heywood Civic Centre on behalf of Rochdale Council have hiked the room hire price up way beyond an affordable amount. I have therefore had to give them notice that we cannot keep the event at their premises any longer. I realise this may be sad for a lot of people but just like the Phoenix rising from the ashes, we will move the event to another location and will call ourselves the 'BURY SOUL CLUB'.
Venue will be relocated to the Polish Centre in Bury. Meanwhile this will be the final one at the Heywood Civic on Saturday 1st June. A lot of fond memories for a lot of people and the odd marriage gained from meeting at this place ... so thank you to all of those people and hope to see you all on the night. We are also offering the chance for every DJ that has played Soul there over the last 24 years to bring along their Favourite Soul Record of All Time and they can play it on stage during the night (No floor clearers if possible....we know what you are like ha ha)

PrinFest - Charity Event Birmingham This Weekend

This Bank Holiday Sunday 26 May, PrinFest Northern Soul & Mod Alldayer with 12 hours of top DJs spinning vinyl.
Heart Research UK have published a press release detailing both their involvement and the background to this event which follows below.
Scooters, Northern Soul and dancing – Halesowen woman remembering late husband with ‘Mod’ inspired charity event
A Halesowen woman who lost her husband to heart failure is raising money for Heart Research UK Midlands and the Woodland Trust with a vintage scooter and Northern Soul inspired event in Selly Oak Birmingham.
Jo Prinsen is hosting the Northern Soul and Mod Charity AllDayer on Sunday 26 May, on what would have been the 50th birthday of her late husband, Ian ‘Prin’ Prinsen, who died in 2016.
The event, which is being held at Bournbrook & Selly Oak Social Club, features a scooter ride-out, taking in sights around Halesowen, Uffmoor Woods, Clent and the Lickey Hills, as well as live DJ’s spinning vinyl, vintage stalls a charity raffle and even a barber.
All involved are donating their services for free, and all the money raised will be donated to Heart Research UK Midlands and the Woodland Trust.
Inspired by their shared love of scooters and Mod culture, Jo decided to organise the event, dubbed ‘PrinFest’, to celebrate the memory of Prin and to raise money for causes close to her heart.
“Prin passed away very suddenly, it was a total shock,” said Jo. “We had been together for 26 years.
“When we got married at Dudley Registry Office in 1999, Prin rode there on my Vespa 90.  Prin is missed so much by all his family and friends, who remember him as a true gent and one of the good guys. His friends gave him a scooter escort to the funeral.
“I wanted to do something that would help to raise money, but also to raise awareness because I think a lot of people don’t realise that heart problems can affect people in their 40’s, and also the ‘classic’ symptoms are not always there.
"PrinFest will reflect Prin’s love of Northern Soul, Mod culture and classic Vespa scooters. He loved building engines, he worked on friend’s scooters and one day hoped to have his own little business fixing scooter engines.”
“The local scooter clubs have been fantastic, I’m really touched by all of the support that they are showing. A lot of them didn’t know Prin personally but they’ve all just got behind him as a fellow scooterist.
“They are all joining in on the ride out, which will be a scenic ride past areas of significance for Prin including woodland that we used to walked in.”
Local businesses, from dry-cleaners to scooter shops have pledged prizes for the raffle, including scooter services and suit cleaning.
Heart Research UK Midlands have also donated many prizes including a 7 night holiday stay for four people in Cyprus .
“I’ve been overwhelmed with the support I’ve received, people have been so lovely. The generosity of people has been incredibly touching,” said Jo.
John Lloyd, Heart Research UK Midlands Regional Executive said: "We are proud to be associated with Jo`s event and the opportunity to highlight the work of Heart Research UK here in the Midlands.
“We encourage everyone to get involved, and hope that with our support, the day will be a huge success.
“Prinfest is going to be a great event and will help to raise funds for our pioneering research in to the treatment, prevention and cure of heart disease, helping hearts here in the Midlands."
Everyone is welcome to attend the AllDayer, with tickets costing £5. For more information, please contact Jo on Joprinsen1@gmail.com. aka #jop

Leola Jiles of the Apollas R I P

More sad news for the soul world. Leola Jiles has passed away, she sang with the group throughout and also had a notable solo career. The photo is of her, Billie Barnum on the right and Ella Jamerson on the left just before appearing on stage at the Cleethorpes Weekender in 2007. My Ace colleague Alec Palao got to know her very well when researching his Apollas CD on Kent and they stayed close...
"Leola Jiles, the soulful lead heard on the Northern Soul classics ‘Mr Creator’ and ‘Pretty Red Balloons,’ and one of the most distinctive voices in San Francisco R&B, gospel and jazz, died from complications from a stroke last Thursday.
Her friend Alec Palao mourns her passing.
They say deaths come in threes, and this past week has certainly lived up to that ominous maxim. For me personally, it included the passing of a respected musical acquaintance, a long-lived family member, and tragically and unexpectedly, one of my favourite people. I have known Leola Jiles for the best part of ten years, and it’s going to be hard imagining things without her. The loss of Leola to her friends and family is matched equally by the loss to the music world of one of the Bay Area’s most cherished performers, one of soul and jazz’s finest vocal stylists, and one hell of a classy lady to boot.
Leola Jiles was born in Ferriday, Louisiana in 1941, moving to the San Francisco Bay Area at the age of nine, settling with her family in Pittsburg, the delta town where Leola would live her whole life, and remain well-known and well-loved in the community. Encouraged to sing by her parents in church and high school, Leola’s powerful voice soon got her noticed by legendary gospel musician and advocate, Faidest Wagoner. Married to Robert Jiles and working as a secretary, Leola’s first record for the Orchestra label in 1962 was organized by Wagoner and featured two of her songs. Local airplay caught the ears of San Francisco-based gospel quartet the Apollos, who were looking for a replacement singer, and immediately hired Leola.
With their tailored exuberance, the Apollos had graduated to the white nightclub circuit where gospel now sat alongside jazz and folk as a popular form of entertainment. From 1962 to 1965, the quartet – Leola, Ella Jamerson, Joann Forks and Ronnie Brown - toured the nation, appearing at high-end niteries, jazz festivals and making frequent television appearances. They also cut two excellent secular singles for Leiber & Stoller’s Tiger imprint as The Lovejoys. In all these activities, Leola was invariably front and centre, as she sank her church-sharpened teeth into whatever material the group decided to tackle. At first that led to some friction with the other members, particularly Joann Forks, but it was clear Leola’s tremendous vocal prowess could not be denied. The young woman could handle a tender showtune ballad or tear into a belter straight from the pulpit with equal aplomb, and her striking good looks – she had once considered working as a model – also brought Leola a lot of attention.
But Ms Jiles was a team player: when Brown left in mid 1965 and the Apollos became girl-group the Apollas, it was Leola and Ella who became the nexus of the group. Joann also left, replaced by Dorothy Ramsey, and this was the line-up that was signed to the Warner Brothers R&B subsidiary Loma in the summer of 1965. A&R honcho Dick Glasser had recognized the many qualities of the trio, and especially Leola’s lead. As supervisor on all the Apollas’ recordings for Loma, and later Warner Brothers proper, Glasser made sure the act always had strong material, sympathetic charts from the likes of Gene Page and HB Barnum, and a production style that brought out the best of their vocal talents. The string of exceptional singles that resulted speak for themselves – ‘You're Absolutely Right,’ ‘Just Can’t Get Enough Of You,’ ‘Sorry Mama,’ ‘Jive Cat,’ and of course two discs that have resonated in UK clubs for decades: ‘Pretty Red Balloons’ and ‘Mr Creator.’ On all of these, Leola nails it time and again, bringing an equal amount of interpretative professionalism and joyous exuberance that literally jumps out of the grooves.
Despite the singles’ consistent quality, the Apollas were unable to make much headway in the charts, but for much of the next six to seven years, they were constantly working, becoming a much sought-after act in several different environments. Whether it be opening for the Monkees on their first concert tour, playing Bay Area teen clubs with the embryonic Sly & The Family Stone as their accompanists, or entertaining the troops both home and abroad, the Apollas were a dependable, professional group with a finely-honed act of contemporary pop and R&B that always left room for a little gospel. They were particularly popular in Australia, New Zealand and the US outpost of Guam, and toured these regions on several occasions.
Billie Barnum replaced Dorothy for a year, until Joann returned to the fold in 1968; Forks’ spot was subsequently filled by Blondell Breed. This latter line-up made two records for Bell with Dick Glasser in 1971 under the name Love Salvation, after which the Apollas decided to call it a day. Leola then cut her third solo single for A&M, the now highly-regarded soul of ‘To Make A Long Story Short’ (during the Warner Brothers period, she had recorded several sides under her own name, including the single ‘Keep It Coming’ and a tremendous uptown ballad, ‘I’ve Got So Used To Loving You,’ that remained unissued at the time). A few bare months after it had come out, she looked like she was finally going to get the break she deserved, when lead vocalist Jean Terrell left the Supremes and Leola was optioned for her slot. But manager Glasser would not allow her to do so unless he got to produce, which killed the deal and left Leola temporarily heartbroken.
After this missed opportunity and a subsequent automobile accident, Leola forewent her professional singing career and enrolled at UC Berkeley to study drama. She starred as Mary Magdalene in a major production of “Jesus Christ Superstar”, followed by a stint with Sammy Cahn’s “Words & Music,” that brought her to London in the 1980s. But Leola never gave up singing. While at UC Berkeley, she became the featured vocalist with the university jazz band, and toured Europe with them, to great acclaim, as well as working with personages as prestigious as Dizzy Gillespie and Placido Domingo.
Remaining in the Bay Area, Leola then developed a cabaret act that became exceptionally popular, winning awards and plaudits left and right, and leading to engagements all over the United States with her trio. She kept that up right until about the time I got to know her. There was also a fondly-remembered Apollas reunion at Cleethorpes in 2007, organized by our own Mr Croasdell. Leola even gained a little local notoriety back in 1979 when her ebullient gospel-inflected treatment of the “Stars And Stripes,” sung at the opening of a San Francisco Giants baseball game at Candlestick Park, offended a handful of killjoys, who somehow persuaded the team to “fire” Leola. The outpouring of fan and press support saw her invited back to sing three more times, on her own terms.
That sounds just like the Leola I got to know and love, a vivacious and kind-hearted, thoughtful lady, who could be tough and feisty, but only when she needed to be. She was also one of the funniest people I have had the pleasure to be around. I already knew she had a hell of an instrument; when I had access to the Warner Brothers tape library some years ago, the first reels I made a bee-line for were those of the Apollas, and sifting through those remarkable performances – along with Leola’s playful between-takes chatter – gave me instant resolve to give the group the anthology they deserved. Leola and I were laughing from our very first phone conversation, and I remember when I first pulled up to her home in Pittsburg, the same one she had bought with her late husband Robert back in the early 60s, the first black couple on the street – she was waiting on the porch with an amazing smile, and an infectious laugh not far behind. I’d sent a CD of the Apollas tracks ahead of time, and her first words to me in person were, “that b**** can sing!”
Assembling the Apollas compilation was a complete treat. I was more than happy to ferry Leola around, whether to the studio so she could watch me mixing the old tracks, or over to San Francisco to visit Ella and spend hours reminiscing over the exploits of the group (the pair of them together truly had me in stitches). Every journey was a laugh riot. Whenever we went to her favourite local restaurant, it was a cheap date, as Leola was so beloved in Pittsburg, her meal was invariably comped.
After the CD came out, we stayed in regular contact, with frequent visits, and she would astonish my wife Cindy and I with her surprise appearances at our Christmas parties (where of course she held court with her typical style and grace). Leola had told me of her health problems in the past, dealing with bouts of cancer on not one, but two occasions, and so when earlier this year she called to ask if I could take her to and from a couple of appointments for eye surgery, I imagined that the same inner strengths that had beaten the cancers would prevail again. Some unforeseen complications arose that obviously scared her, but her sudden passing last week was truly a shock. I really had believed that her indomitable spirit would rise to lick these latest problems.
Leola always liked to refer to me as her “producer,” and after a few years of gently tip-toeing around the subject of doing some recording with her (“you know you're gonna have to pay me!” she would always tease), I had persuaded her to contribute vocals to a Stax-type arrangement I had put together, very much with her gospel “growl” in mind. On the drive to the hospital, she sang along with the demo, and expressed enthusiasm for the task, although I could tell it was going to take a considerable degree of strength on her part. Sadly, that’s not going to happen now. If I had to choose one recording to remember this amazing lady by, it would probably be the late period Warners single ‘Who Would Want Me Now’ – for the incredible, heart-wrenching way Leola not only brought church to a pop song, but the playful asides and audible twinkle in the eye that were so much her personality. She’s belting it out upstairs right now, that’s for sure."

This weeks Artist of the Week Celebrates the music of William Bell.
William Bell Biography (Wikipedia)

William Bell (born William Yarbrough; July 16, 1939) is an American soul singer and songwriter. As a performer, he is probably best known for his debut single, 1961's "You Don't Miss Your Water"; 1968's top 10 hit in the UK "Private Number", a duet with Judy Clay; and his only US top 40 hit, 1976's "Tryin' to Love Two", which also hit No. 1 on the R&B chart. Upon the death of Otis Redding, Bell released the well-received memorial song "A Tribute to a King".
As a songwriter, Bell co-authored the Chuck Jackson hit "Any Other Way" (which was a cover since Bell issued it first) as a follow-up to "You Don't Miss Your Water"; Billy Idol's 1986 hit "To Be a Lover", which was first a hit for Bell under its original title "I Forgot to Be Your Lover"; and the blues classic "Born Under A Bad Sign", popularized by both Albert King and Cream.
Although he was a long-time recording artist for Stax Records, he is unrelated to the label's one-time president, Al Bell.

Release Date: Monday 20th May 2019
Following on from our previous release of two of the more in demand songs from the Washington D.C Tec label by Roscoe & Friends and Tojo, we at Soul Junction have decided to release the remainder Of Roscoe (Bowie) & Friends Tec output in the format of an EP single.

The A-side features the currently in demand Funk outing “Barnyard Soul” the official A-side on the original release of Roscoe’s classic Northern Soul dancer “Broadway Sissy”.
The B-side features a Roscoe & Friends cover version of the Herbie Hancock penned classic “Watermelon Man” a song first recorded by famed Latin Jazz percussionist Mongo Santamaria in 1962 and released on the Riverside Records subsidiary Battle label.  “Watermelon Man” has been covered by many, many artists ever since with Santamaria’s version being inducted into The Grammy Hall Of Fame in 1998. Herbie Hancock also, due to the popularity of Santamaria’s version recorded the song on his debut Blue Note album “Taking Off”.

As we return to the performer on this particular version. Roscoe Bowie Jr,a talented multi-instrumentalist who had honed his skills as a jazz musician in and around Washington, D.C. As an arranger, Roscoe’s name can be found on many generic Washington recordings such as Leroy Taylor’s sublime Brunswick outing “Oh Linda”, The Ascot’s Miradon sides “Miss Heartbreaker”, “Anytime and Sometimes I Wonder”. When Knight Brothers Jimmy Diggs (of “Temptation ‘Bout To Get Me” fame) briefly accepted an invitation to join Larry Bell and Jerry Norris in the vocal trio The Carltons it was Roscoe who arranged the first two of their 3 excellent Argo 45’s “Can’t You Hear The Beat/Ooo Baby”  followed by “Easy Living/Hey, Mr. Lonesome”. Roscoe again featured as the arranger on another fellow Washington, D.C artist Andy Magruder’s 1964 Chess outing “Later Than You Think/Do You Wanta Go” released under the artist name of Andy Mack with The Carltons featuring as backing singers.

Record producer Harry J. Coombs used several local musicians on his productions such as pianist “Porkie Johnson and guitarist Buzzy Bowie (who later toured with Major Lance). Studio time was often hard to get as well as being expensive so rehearsal sessions would often take place in Buzzy Bowie’s basement. During one particular session Buzzy was joined by his older brother Roscoe then predominately a horn player, and it was during this session while jamming that the tracks “Barnyard Soul”,” Broadway Sissy” , Do Watcha Know” and the cover version of “Watermelon Man” were first laid down. Later to be released on the Washington Tec label under the artist name of Roscoe & Friends.

Film - Amazing Grace - Aretha Franklin - UK Release

Amazing Grace' a documentary film has just opened in the US to 'rave' reviews.
In 1972, the Aretha Frankin live 'Amazing Grace' album was recorded during a live concert held over two days at the New Temple Missionary Baptist Church in Los Angeles. This album then went on to become  the highest selling Gospel music album of all time.
Sydney Pollock was hired by Warner Brothers (Atlantic Records) to direct a documentary film of the concert. With the aim being to release the documentary as part of a double bill cinema release with 'Super Fly'.
However due to technical problems with the sound synchronisation the release never happened and the footage then sat in Warner Brothers vaults for over 38 years. The footage eventually was handed over to Alan Elliot, who then after two years managed to resolve the technical issues and finally complete the film.
The finished film was then planned to be released in 2011, but due to legal action by Aretha Franklin herself, the film release was postponed, with similar happening again in 2015.
The film finally got its premiere in Nov. 12 at the DOC NYC film festival in Manhattan New York, three months after Aretha Frankin had sadly passed away, it has since been released worldwide and is set to be released in the Uk on May 10th 2019
Aretha Franklin plus James Cleveland, Southern California Community Choir, C. L. Franklin, Bernard Purdie , Chuck Rainey, Clara Ward, Mick Jagger (audience), Sydney Pollack, Charlie Watts.

Greg Belson's Divine Disco Vol. 2

Greg Belson's Divine Disco 2 is in stores everywhere today!
Check out this great review from one of our favorite retailers Dusty Groove
... "A pretty fantastic selection of rare disco tracks from the American underground – all of them infused with a spiritual message, but served up with grooves that go head to head with some of the best underground club of the time! The mix of positive energy and upbeat grooves is wonderful – and if you've ever heard the Clark Sisters club classic "You Brought The Sunshine", then you'll definitely know the spirit of these tunes! If you're worried about the message being one that you're not into, don't – because there's sort of a universal spirit going on here – one that gets past conventions of the church, and which really goes for a general uplifting message that's totally great – almost a precursor to some of the positive house in more recent decades. And speaking of house, there's less of that here than you'd expect – as most of the instrumentation and production are strongly in the best New York underground modes from the disco years – with less of any 80s or electro soul elements."
Divine Disco Vol. 2 digs deeper into the privately pressed, independently distributed gospel music with that dancefloor touch. Shining the light on these amazing artists for the first time!

Available from all good retail outlets both physical and online NOW!

And you can check out a promo mix for the compilation right here;
Thanks for your support!

The O'Jays - The Last Word -The Last Album

Last Friday saw the release of a new album from The O'Jays, titled 'The Last One'. This album was announced last year as their first for 15 years but in the same breath was also announced as their last one ever.
'The Last One'  is now out and about in record stores and online, available in all the usual formats, cd, vinyl, mp3 and on most if not all subscribe music streaming services.
With the album being both a first and last (so to speak) album, being billed as more 'political' than past works, plus a revisit of a classic and featuring the involvement of such people as Steve Greenberg, Mike Mangini,  Sam Hollander and soul legend Betty Wright this album has a lot of promise, can check out it via the preview below...

The O'Jays Official Site has a length release article, a brief clip follows below...
Release notes
So it’s no surprise that on The Last Word, The O’Jays’ first studio album in 15 years and what the band has announced will be their FINAL album, emotes the same hunger and vocal craftsmanship as the 2005 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee’s greatest ‘70s and ‘80s works.
The Last Word was produced by the Grammy nominated producers Steve Greenberg, Mike Mangini and R&B legend Betty Wright (the trio behind Joss Stone’s “Soul Sessions”), along with the songwriter and rock/pop mastermind Sam Hollander (Panic! at the Disco, Weezer, Neon Trees).
“It’s almost like having a bucket list,” Eddie explains, when asked why the group decided to return to the studio one final time to create some magic. “We wanted to do an O’Jays album that’s fantastic from beginning to end. This project definitely does just that.”

New discography book from Soulful Kinda Music - Philadelphia

Philadelphia, The City Of Brotherly Love. A tale of two decades really as far as Soul Music goes, the 1960’s and the 1970’s.The 1960’s were dominated by two companies really, Parkway, and Cameo who released literally hundreds of singles. Not all were Soul, in fact they also defined the pop sound in the the States at the time, but a lot were. Partially in the back ground though was the Jamie / Guyden group. Not only did they also release hundreds of singles, but they also distributed what must at one stage have been nearly 100 other smaller Philadelphia labels. This was of course the key to getting national sales. It was easy enough to get sales in Philadelphia if you had a great record. All the Mom & Pop One Stops would be selling it. But to break out of the city and get national exposure and sales you had to have a whole distribution network, and that was way beyond the resources of most smaller labels. That’s where Jamie/Guyden came in. They had the network, and could distribute your records all over the country for you, for a fee of course !
By the mid Sixties though two other names were coming to the fore. Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff. As label owners and writers and producers.By the early Seventies they made it big time. They created music that became known world wide as ‘The Philly Sound’. I don’t need to go into details here about the groups and artists that had huge hits and became household names of Philadelphia International Records, if you’ve bought this book, you’ll know them anyway. Suffice to say, it created an identity for Philadelphia in the Seventies that rivalled that Motown and Detroit in the Sixties. As usual, the book contains discographies for artists from Philadelphia, and those not born there, but who recorded a significant part of their career in the city.As usual, I’m sure that somewhere in nearly 300 pages, I’ll have made a mistake, either a typo, or missed something out. What I am confident about is that these are the most accurate and complete discographies of labels and artists that you will find anywhere.
Orders taken now: £17.00 for each book, with free postage in the UK
Just click the link to email me HERE for details, or send me a PM @Dave Rimmer
The book is also available on Amazon UK, Amazon US, and all the other European sites. It's still cheaper for UK buyers to buy from me because Amazon will charge you £2.99 postage, and I'm selling at a pound less than Amazon, but for my European, and American friends it will be cheaper to buy from Amazon.
And of course at Venues all over the UK.

6TS 100 Club London future plans & 2020 date switch

With the 40th anniversary looming, I’ve considered the future of the 6TS all-nighters at the 100 Club. They have run very well (with the usual hiccups) over the last 12 months and I appreciate the two nighters off a year that Matt has run so successfully recently. With advancing years, I do find the whole nighter tiring though, particularly the start, so Matt and I have come up with a solution. I’ll continue to run the anniversary nighters and Xmas parties alone, but after this year’s anniversary, for the rest of the events, we will work in partnership.
He has very kindly offered to do that first opening shift , making sure everyone gets in and the sound, light, chairs etc are AOK. That is what takes it out of me and I’ll have an extended disco-nap and come down a little later for my first DJ spot. I can then stay, feeling less-drained, till the end and those fabulous last three records; my favourite part of the night.

The resident DJs are happy with this planned arrangement, so it’s business as usual with Matt on board as a full partner and more of the same rare soul music, that has seen us into our middle age.

I hope you’ll all be happy with the new arrangement.

Ady & Matt
PS I got the mid-summer all nighter date wrong for 2020and it's July 4th not June 27th as sent out in yesterdays email. Also I left off the Xmas party for this year which is as usual the Thursday before Xmas Dec 19th 9pm-2am. Apart from that, the rest was OK!
To recap future dates are

Kent Harris - Obituary

Kent Levaughn Harris was born in 1930 in Oklahoma City into a musical family that moved to San Diego in 1936. He and his younger sister Dimples started their recording careers in 1954 when Kent cut the song ‘1992’ as Ducky Drake for Trend, while Dimples featured on the flip. Dimples would have a long solo career and a shorter one with her two other sisters Betty and Beverly as the Harris Sisters.
The highlight of Kent’s recording career was as Boogaloo and His Gallant Crew, recording ‘Cops & Robbers’ and ‘Clothes Line’ for Crest in 1956; the record went to # 9 on the R&B charts. The A side was covered by Bo Diddley later that year, which in turn led to versions by the Rolling Stones, the Downliners Sect and Wayne Fontana in the UK, when the 60s beat boom began. The flip had a new lease of life when Lieber and Stoller recorded the Coasters on it as ‘Shopping For Clothes’ on Atco in 1960 and it made the Hot 100. Sadly, the duo substituted their name as writers for Kent’s, it was not rectified for many years. Despite his successes Kent preferred to write and produce songs to performing them. He was also a DJ and had a great ear for talent, he spotted and worked with Brenda Holloway, the Whispers, Hank Jacobs and the Mighty Hannibal at the very start of their careers.
For black music fans it was also the smaller acts he worked with that made his talents so appreciated. Blues singers like Donoman, Ray Agee, the Phillips Sisters and ace guitarist Adolph Jacobs all thrived on his songs and productions, while soul singers like Larry Atkins, the Francettes, the Lon-Genes and Faye Ross produced gems under his tutelage. However, it was his work with his wife Ty Karim that he was most proud of. He produced her from 1965 into the 80s on revered recordings such as ‘You Just Don’t Know’, ‘You Really Made It Good To Me’, ‘All At Once’, ‘Lighten Up Baby’, ‘Wear Your Natural’ and ‘Lightin’ Up’. These in particular have grown in popularity from their small beginnings with the local Los Angeles scene to their discovery by the Northern Soul DJs and clubs of the 70s, then on to international admiration throughout the worldwide rare soul scene right up to the present day. Kent and Ty’s music has even continued in live shows when their daughter Karime performed a selection of the songs at the Cleethorpes Weekender and subsequent soul nights around the country. Kent moved into boogie-funk and electro-soul with his Sheridan House releases in the 80s and 90s and continued to run his record shops and stalls into the 2000s.
Ace records documented his career on CDCHD 1334 “Kent Harris’ R&B Family” and CDKEND 397 “Romark Records; Kent Harris’ Soul Sides”. There is a solo Ty CD “The Complete Ty Karim” CDKEND 308.
