FILM SYNOPSIS “The 9 Lives of Barbara Dane”.
Barbara Dane: Folk, blues and jazz singer, international social justice activist and recording star, wife, mother of three, feminist, record producer, unwavering maverick and general troublemaker on the road at 90. THE 9 LIVES OF BARBARA DANE is a sonic boom, an explosion of music and passion, a celebration of one woman’s groundbreaking artistry and moral leadership. Her life intersected with dozens of cultural luminaries of the 20th century – Pete Seeger mentored her, Bob Dylan looked up to her, Louis Armstrong wanted to take her to Europe with him, Bonnie Raitt was inspired by her, Jane Fonda learned from her. Standing strong with her singular confidence, Dane emanated the people-powered connectivity of folk, the defiance of blues and the elemental cool of jazz while propelling major historic events with boldness and subversion that cut through commercial artifice and earned her a 5” FBI file. THE 9 LIVES OF BARBARA DANE is an underground history of a singer-agitator whose unbending principles guide her through notoriety, obscurity, and finally, music legend.
Venue Info: The Nia Centre, now known as Niamos Centre, is an unfunded co-operatively run community hub and arts venue located in Hulme, Manchester. It occupies the former site of the Hulme Playhouse, a building with a rich history that has been used as a theatre, cinema, BBC recording studio, and more. The Niamos Centre was relaunched in 2018 as a community arts centre, and it now features spaces for visual arts, live music, dance nights, film screenings, a micro-bakery, and other arts and community activities. Proceeds from the event will go to the venue as part of ongoing fundraiser for the venue.
