How rare is this? On the Prince Buster label. Supposed to be, of course, "Rough Rider". Same song, wrong title. B-side is one of the two "Johnny Cool"'s (not sure which one). B-side label doesn't mention "Johnny Cool", but has the single's catalog numbers: 40-B and P.B. 67-2. Was this 45 probably released before the Blue Beat single?

You're right -- Rough Rider/127 Orange St. was issued on FAB, not Blue Beat. However, here's a disc similar to mine: Shanty Town/Seven Duppy. That listing says this particular disc was released in 1966, one year before the Blue Beat release in 1967. (And like my disc, the listing's disc has a different B-side for the "Shanty Town" A-side.) So if my disc is anything like that listing's disc, I'm thinking the "Rough Grina" disc precedes the 1968 FAB "Rough Rider" release.

I have one other person emailing me to say the disc I have was pressed by Prince Buster at the same time or slightly before the official release and sold only at his record shop. I'll see if I can email the seller of the item listed on the Popsike site for his feedback on the matter. The B-side on my disc is labeled as "40-B", and there is a copy of "Rough Rider" out on FAB on the Popsike site which does have a catalog number of "40". In any case, if this disc is a reissue of some kind, it definitely isn't a new reissue label like 7TS; my disc is at least 30 years old.

OK once and for all, your record is a reissue, the original is on Olive Blossom and the matrix is PB 144. the UK release is on Fab 40, both came out in 68.

If it were sold at Busters shop as a pre, it would be on an Olive Blossom blank.

Source is Roots Knotty Roots which catalogues over 50,000 jamaican and UK reggae/ska releases, gives matrixes, dates, producers, labels etc.

p.s. if your record is at least 30 years old that would make it from 1979

Amazon says RKR is out-of-print, so it's not likely I'll find an inexpensive copy; do your copies have a listing for the release date/possible #copies pressed of the "Rough Grina" reissue, or is it just one of a hundred obscure reissue pressings Buster put out that the book wouldn't bother to list?

No it's not a book, it's a pc program, a searchable database - absolutely invaluable for identifying blanks. (If you can't find one, let me know)

It has no listing for that title at all (goodness knows why they called it that, though he does have a track called Kinky Griner or Grinder).

I must have two dozen records on the Prince Buster label, various colours, they are a right mess and very difficult to date but most are represses - I have a Big Youth on Prince Buster which is a blue label so maybe blue ones are new product and white are reissues.
