The Northernsoul meat and potatoes are the 6T's rare soul tracks that we worship and love but we all know that Northernsoul is a very broad church and many of us have drifted towards the enjoyment of different flavors such as 7T's, Modern, RnB, and the like.

What where your "Gateway Tunes"?

I Wanna Give You Tomorrow - Benny Troy was possibly my "Gateway Tune" from being an avid dyed in the wool 6T's fan to the 7T's Newies tunes that I am passionate about to this day.

That soaring intro and the haunting guitar rift embedded itself firmly into my DNA and I fell madly deeply in glorious love with this master piece.

What was your "Gateway Tunes"? from one type of music to another?

Can you remember where you heard the tune and who played it?

I think mine was at Rotherham, cant remember who spun it? It could have been Bri? Or Pat Brady??

Gate way sound for me was Clarence Carter "Slip Away". heard it a number of times but it just hit me a like a sack o'shit one day. Got me listening to more Clarence Carter and those Stax/Atlantic etc artists Joe Tex, Wilson Pickett etc etc that some of us ignored because we were so busy listening to and collecting Northern, in fact I was blinded by Northern.

So in short Clarence Carter got me into Southern Soul and hence a natural progression into Deep Soul.

Never enjoyed music so much as I do now, even in my Northern years

hearing pyramid the first time i went to stafford i think it was dave thornley that play it, had never heard something that obscure at that time that stood out head and shoulders above all the other tunes that were being played at that time but open up my ears to the new sounds which came out after that. i was a strickly oldies and was blinkered to these new sounds. the snipping that went on between the oldies fans and the 60s newies fans can anyone else remember this? to me stop a lot of people enjoying both styles of music back then and a lot of tunes didnt reach the ears of the oldies crowd just cos they were played by djs such as guy hennigan etc.

Flitting between the Casino and the Mecca in the early seventies just hearing great soul music of all different genres new realeases played allongside older more established tunes was the order of the day so no gateway tunes for me . a much healthier and relaxed attitude then IMO .

Gateway tunes. Got into northern through my big bro, Listened to the usual suspects Al Wilson,3 before 8,R.Dean Taylor ect before getting into the nighter scene.

Went to nighters in Edinburgh(Clouds one of the best nighters at the time in the country at the time),then attending Wigan late 70s till its closure.

This is the time Searling,Sam &Pat brady started to bring in 70s such as Will Collins,Roy Dawson,Mike Jemison,Larry Houston,Larry Brown,Daybreak,Pages, Bobby Thurston.

With sounds like these who could ignore modern soul. Bobby Thurston Just Ask Me is the one that blew me away, one of the first album tracks i bought from soul bowl(and not the last).

The modern sounds just got betterwith the above djs late Wigan,Rotheram and Rebels Sheffield(anyone remember this one) playing more album tracks Tony Fox,Zingara,LTD,L.j Reynolds,Mighty Fire,Charles Veil,Garry Glenn,The Impressions and the rest(can anybody add to this).

These days still love the music, like yourself can listen to all decades of the music from Dee Clark to Mario Biondi(given up on the priests)!

Your topic has made the old braincells go into overdrive thinking of some of the tracks played at gigs over the years. Just listening to solar radio as i write this Jonethon Butler track So strong is on which does take you to another level.

i think it was after id geavitated back to allnighters after about 15 years or so , one of the first was keele, and also the griffin in leeds, roger banks was giving a tutorial that i didnt want to listen to really if im honest , about early sixties sounds which had a different tempo , the tune that epitomised that time for me was the gilletttes same identical thing, it used to make me feel really angry when i heard it and i didnt really ask myself why at the time.i think now i was probably a bit jealous of the people i saw dance to it so obviously enjoying it whcih i hadnt been part of . It seemed too slow and had a bit of a pisstaking saxophone hook which seemed to get right up my pompous snotty upturned nose, Now of course i have the emotional maturity and insight to realise i was just being a dick and enjoy spending time hearing almost exclusively unknown ( to me at least) tunes wherever there happens to be an R&B room.
