July 22, 201212 yr Author Back up to 125th St in Harlem once again ...... Clyde McPhatter was spotted there in 1953 & signed by Atlantic Records. Both Joe Tex & James Brown won Amateur Night there in the mid 50's. Harold Melvin & the BlueNotes 1st appeared on the Apollo stage way back in 1960. .... July 25, 201212 yr Author Gloria Lynn was on the US music scene for many years. She had records released out of LA in the early 70's, but in the mid 60's she was playing live shows in New York.

July 27, 201212 yr Author I bet it was 'Hard Work' sitting through this January 1967 show ..... by all accounts, John had just been a big hit at the Monterey Jazz Festival (where his live act was recorded & released by Columbia on LP). I only became aware of his stuff in the 70's (his big hit was in 76) ... but he 1st recorded at the start of the 60's !!! Edited July 27, 201212 yr by Roburt

July 30, 201212 yr Author Italian-American doo-wop group Vito & the Salutations only made a few soulful sides in the 60's ... .... but their popularity with doo-wop fans kept them working in New York, even as late as 1974 ..... ........... One of their best 60's outings ...........

The shop still has a music department, though now it sells more electronic items (computers, smart phones, music systems, digi cameras, etc). August 2, 201212 yr Author No straight up soulers on this bill ........ but Tommy Chong (Cheech & Chong) hadn't long quit Bobby Taylor & the Vancouvers .... ... and Brian Auger had run UK mod soul group Steampacket in the mid 60's. Mind you, I bet Smashy & Nicey think "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet" is soulful !!

August 4, 201212 yr Author Atlantic Records were obviously increasing record sales in 1974 by helping promote live shows their artists were undertaking in New York ... You could catch one of Philly's finest sweet soul groups and a jazzy guy in April ....

August 9, 201212 yr Author Nina Simone obviously provided her own support act for these 1969 NY club shows ....
August 14, 201212 yr Author Back to the Village Gate again .... ... but as a few of these feature jazz artists.... ... I've lumped them all together in a montage ..
August 18, 201212 yr Author Lloyd Price's Turntable Club in Manhattan had been operating for around 6 years by 1974. People were taking the place for granted by then, so the name was changed to give it a new lease of life. Not long after the 52nd St venue (1674 Broadway) got it's name change, a new disco opened a few blocks away (on 45th St in Manhattan) ........... guess what it's name was ..........
