Butlers With Frankie Beverly
Because Of My Heart C/w I Want To Feel I'm Wanted
It was always gonna be pretty hard to follow the euphoria of selling the Larry Clinton issue this week. But we think Frankie Beverly’s different take of his Fairmount 1014 trophy on the impossible to acquire Washington D.C.ROUSER label, is the perfect sequel.
Take a listen these two raw-cut versions that were abandoned by Fairmount to emerge some 150 miles south in Washington, D.C. and the legend was born.
The simple piano intro is the Green-Light for the dance-floor dash, driven by an insane saxophonist, who supports Frankie’s leathery vocal style throughout. A lush harmony chorus from The Butlers, then one of the ultimate sax breaks, horns, shrill girls…well this recording just has THELOT!
THISISMATCHLESSNORTHERNSOUL.
So flip it over and you’ll be treated to a finger-popping groove that is every note as good, in fact some would say better than the usual preferred DJ side. I could run the full spectrum of superlatives, whilst reviewing these two killers but I think the soundfile will do all the talking required.
So to the label - less that 5 known copies known? may not be an exaggeration of it’s rarity!
This 45s offers Northern Soul collecting, not only at it’s most challenging, but most arousing too…spine-tingling stuff.

Effie Smith
Dial That Telephone Part 1 & 2
A PERFECT copy.
As you will already know this example is one of the really scarce #’s in the series, this copy was most probably unplayed before the soundfile was lifted, the spindle hole was virgin, both labels are like new, as is the vinyl both sides.
Sue searchers, you will not find a finer copy of this Los Angeles Black novelty recording.

Try To Think (what You're Doing) C/w The World Keeps Spinning
Herbie Williams - The Lover Who Loves You Not!
Richard Searling’s Wigan Casino Monster, the one that had the punters ripping their hair out with frustration of not knowing who it really was.
That bank of strings would reverberate around the cathedral of Northern Soul; the lone piano break signaled arms held aloft, as the sea of dancers would dreamlike spin and shuffle to down-beat NS that Wigan Casino had not witnessed before… such was Richard Searling’s ear-for-a-tune.
Today this legendary 45 still has the same effect.. but is rarely heard - sadly oldies venues are virtually devoid of real top-quality NS oldies - predictably replaced by the tried-tested-terminal-tunes.
Hopefully soon oldies DJ aspire do whole sets of the stand-out tunes of yesteryear that refresh both the memory & the soul
Wigan Casino - this spin was surely one of the greatest spins ever!
NOTE: of all the few copies we have had though our hands over the decades were pressed in “contaminated” vinyl that gives varying levels of pimpling. Some resemble a bad case of acne, a few you can hardly notice the blemishes at all - this copy is THEBEST playing surface I’ve witnessed, check out the flawless soundfile & two immaculate labels.
Also we’ve sound-clipped the flipside to showcase the 2 record only artist’s vocal power.

George Freeman
Down And Out
The RARE “Gold” text 1962 press as opposed to the not so rare 1963 Silver Text press.
BEATBALLADHEAVEN
The New York Big City Sound served stone-cold with George’s convincing vocal descending into despair on a full orchestral arrangement. Master arranger Perry Botkin uses all his movie score potential as he constructs layer upon layer of sound. Starting with a few plucks of the violin, lazy castanets drift aside as George’s bellowing vocal takes over, then Perry mounts an a front off timely horns as the session transforms into an unstoppable force.
As 49th Street in the Manhattan generates another Brill Building masterpiece.
George went on to record a few other great soul tunes, and Botkin’s talents took him on to Movie &TV scores that includes Mork & Mindy, Happy Days and films that Jack Nicholson stared in….
The roads of life …
PS this Gold Text beauty is utterly pristine!
