about six years, i was supposed to be studying my arts degree, but as usual, was more intrested in soul tunes, and managed to combine the two.

I was supposed to write about how African Tribal artefacts are taken as 'art' in western society, when in their own societies they may have been, say, religious icons etc. Anyway, to cut a long story short, i thought bollox to that i'm gonna compare it to how soul records are taken out of their original country and danced to in the UK.

here's the link, but be warned, it's a proper Uni paper, and to be honest, it's not exactly a lighthearted read - some might like it though...

incidentally - it was supposedly picked up by some canadian (i think) publisher for a book, but i heard no more about it - if anyone's seen it in print lerruz know please....

Well if I was marking the paper I'd Fail it. On the sole basis that nobody likes a smart arse.

I didn't read it all, frankly the following line was enough for me:-

"It is easy to draw similarities between tribal artefacts and the 'tribal' element in a dance culture (all dance cultures are tribal)"

I've enjoyed the scene for 25 years. Its not tribal. Its full of nice people who are pleasure to spend the night with. Convince me otherwise. Discuss.

Think your linking tribal to the idea of primitive barbarous peoples, mud huts in the jungle comes to mind! the word tribal is more expansive than that, this is from the Oxford English Dictionary: Tribal: of or pertaining to a tribe

Tribe: a group of persons forming a community, a family,

a class of persons, a fraternity, a set, a class or group,

a number or company of persons, large numbers of persons

I personally think that the term tribal fits quite well with the aspects of the northern scene, we connect to a common thread, enjoy the company of like minded people and feel safe and secure in their company and we love to dance on a hot and heaving dance floor, how tribal is that!

Agree - there are some parallels between the originals/pressings debate and originals v reproductions/fakes in art... only had time for a quick scan through the article but you make some very good points

Yes tribal was the contentious word here. If you are going to use words like that why stop there?

Why not try & include herd?

when used re' people herd tends to be used in a derogatory fashion as in the quote from Thoreau and I'm sure you'll agree " us lot" aren't common!
