While we're saluting the dead today, let's pay our respects to the great Floyd Dixon, whose passing was reported in the Times this morning.

Floyd's name won't mean a lot to anyone who's not an out-and-out R & B fan, but in the 1950s he was respsonsible for some of the coolest rhythm and blues shuffles ever to find their way out of Los Angeles. His considerable library of releases on labels like Aladdin, Cat and Modern, including killer tunes like "Girl Fifteen" and "Hey Bartender", incorporated many pivotal records in the evolution of Jamaican music - more than anyone outside of the late Rosco Gordon and Amos Milburn, it was the shuffles of Floyd Dixon that had the most influnce on the music of the young Laurel Aitken, Owen Gray, Theophilius Beckford and other pioneers of Jamaica's early recording activity.

He was a great artist and, like the others who have passed this week and whose memories have been observed here today, his fabulous music will live on long after all of us have ceased to contribute to this website.

May he rest easy.

TONE

Thanks for posting this, Tony. I, for one, will be having a Floyd Dixon evening in - and raising a glass - 'Hey Bartender'.... Jo
