Excuse me for being thick but why are these called Test Pressings?

Record Shack label does an initial test run of 50 and recently Ian Levine does an  initial test run of 30 which are also  pressed by Record Shack. Therefore these are test presses. Originally major labels used these for quality control purposes only but today they are also a commercial item for sale.
