Further update regarding the transporting of 45s as hand luggage on airlines to a European destination :

I recently flew with Ryanair from Doncaster to Pisa , Italy , at the end of October ( I went to DJ at The Club Sonar All - Nighter in Siena , guesting with Roccia , Meni and Barbara Grassi ) , and despite strict checking of my box ( steady ..... ) , I had no trouble .

My box is a wooden one , with metal corners , and measures 305mm L x 210mm W x 220mm H , which is below Ryanair's requirement on hand luggage , and I would expect its' size meets the requirement of most airlines regarding hand luggage - but check this anyway . As to the weight of the box , this was not checked .

In respect of the checking of my box , the security staff first asked me what the box contained , and if I minded them physically checking the contents . The lady doing the inspection did not pull the sleeves from the box in order to check , but inspected between the sleeves to see if there was anything there .

Once she was satisfied ( again .... steady ) that everything was OK , she thanked me for allowing the check .

While she was conducting this check , a male collegue looked over her shoulder and asked " Got any Barry Manilow ? I Like Barry Manilow " . Oh how my sides ached !

Hopefully , my information will be of help to those intending to travel , as stated , to a european destination with a box of records .

I've just returned from Switzerland 2wks ago and brought back 40 singles in a carrier bag and eveyrthing was ok nothing said, and they were placed through the scanner.I think it's all back to normal now for carrying hand luggage.

I also took a full metal box containing 200 rekkids to California as handluggage. No dramas whatsoever. Think the "panic" is over now. ('til next time of course)

The last couple of years, I've been slowly bringing over my collection from Australia and had no problems. Most of it was hand luggage, but air freighted a few boxes too.

Leaving Sydney Airport from my last visit home, the guy who scanned my luggage just said (in his best suburban aussie accent): "have you just got lots and lots of records in there?". I thought it was priceless! We used to fly with our playboxes between Oz cities over the years before this and only one friend had to put his records in the hold. That was because he was over the weight limit (us girls generally got away with murder )

Also, I get to European soul nights about 5 to 7 times a year now and travel with a least one person who is DJing. The only real problem I ever saw was July 2004 at Stanstead. Security were bordering on a strike and delayed him for over an hour, just checking through his vinyl over and over. He kept asking the guy to please be careful as he handled them, but the guy was a prat. We should have missed the plane, but a stroke of unconventional luck got us through

We went to Spain a few weeks ago whilst the security restrictions were still high. No problems for either of the guys with play boxes with them and we landed 4 hours after scheduled ...not bad for EasyJet! [For some reason, ever since Sept 11th, i'm nearly always security checked leaving the uk (probably because I have olive skin?). They only asked to x-ray my shoes that time, so it was a bonus run]
