Hello and welcome to the May 2019 list!
First out there’s a bit shorter modern soul 45 section this time around. But the list also end with a bunch of albums with lots of great modern soul titles in it so do look closely in both if that’s your preferred soul music. Highlights includes a couple of indie labels releases by Cloudburst, Backyard construction and Up from the Bottom and major label ones from Buddy Miles, Roy Ayers, Mighty Fire and more.
The northern soul/crossover section is filled to the brim, TSU Toronadoes “What good am I?” on the first local label, Soul Shakers on Loma, Pamoja’s fantastic double header and Limitations on Volt, cheap classics and many more.
We have a rather long selection of hard to find/out of print recent releases and reissues.
And there’s a also short but sweet Sweet/Deep/Group section before the aforementioned album section.
I have just uploaded a new mix to my mixcloud account, a four hour recording from a get together with local Stockholm collectors. Featuring early 1960’s northern soul to 90’s UK street soul, and everything inbetween.
Another boring reminder about paypal payments – please make sure to fill in GBP in the second currency field as I don’t want to receive payments in SEK, nor in any other currencies. Paypal sucks and has set the default to try to convert payments to sellers home currency. This is of course an excuse to use their crap currency rates. You might need to use the laptop version, rather than a mobile one to be able to even set the currency the seller receives your payment in. And as always I ask all orders over £150 to be sent as friends & family, or add 4% to cover the fees.
Rant over and on with the list. And if you find something just PM to order. And I will get back to you with availability, total including shipping and payment instructions.
And hope to see some of you on the forthcoming Stockholm Soul Weekender!
BR, Karl
Modern Soul & Two Step 45’s
Cloudburst – Speciality item – SMS Sound Machine / VG+/G / £300 (Achingly great, and rare Detroit modern soul 45. Dancer side is in the lower side of VG+, and plays ok but not perfect. The slow flip is in G condition due to a bunch of heavy marks. This side plays through but with plenty background noise in the first part of the song.)
Backyard Construction – I want your lovin’ / Are you lonely – B.Y.C. Productions / EX / £225 (Two killer sides for this NY modern soul 45. One dancer and one midtempo side.)
Buddy Miles – I’m just a kiss away – Columbia / EX / £100 (Stone classic, such a great Johnny Bristol production and one that always been hard to find on 7 inch. No hiss but a tiny and very short scrape sound in the intro.)
Bobby Sheen – Something new to do / I may not be what you want – Warner Brothers / EX / £80 (Such a solid double header, never get tired of this. Year written on label.)

Pamoja – Oooh, baby / Only the lonely know – Keiper / EX / £300 (1975 Chicago soul of the highest quality. From the group who later did a nice E,W&F clone in form of Jewel “Paradise”. This double header is something else though, quite a unique sounding feelgood dancer with probably the best falsetto I’ve ever heard. Flip is a killer sweet soul ballad.)
Limitations – All because of you – Volt / VG+ / £200 (Xover dancer with THE intro. Such a quality tune. Some light marks on vinyl, plays great. Tiny writing on label, blue pen on blue label.)
T.S.U. Toronadoes – What good am I? / Getting the corners – Ovide / VG+ / £175 (Very rare first, local release of this crossover soul winner. Writing on “Getting the corners” side, not sure it’s someone playing around or a written dedication from someone in the group.)
Soul Shakers – I’m getting weaker / It’s love – Loma / EX / £150 (Killer NS out of the Cali Teri De stable. White demo, label has sticker and year written on it.)

Miracles – (Come ‘round here) I’m the one you need / Save me – Tamla / VG+/EX / £25 (Two of their best 60’s sides. Complete with the great looking picture sleeve.)
Supremes – Back in my arms again / Whisper you love me – Motown / EX/VG+ / £20 (White demo copy with picture sleeve. Two awesome soulful dancers, rather than the pop oriented one they are more known for.)
Rozetta Johnson – Mine was real – Clintone / VG+ / £20 (Excellent little Sam & Lillian Dees tune. Seem to be popular with people into pop music, not sure how they found it and why it struck a cord.)
Darrell Banks – Open the door to your heart / Our love (Is in the pocket) – Revilot / VG+ / £15 (Pink label styrene copy of this classic NS double header.)
Darrell Banks – Open the door to your heart / Our love (Is in the pocket) – Revilot / VG+ / £15 (Pink label vinyl copy, strong end of VG, plays well but has light marks. BB hole through label.)
Harry Ray – Ride your pony – All Platinum / EX / £12 (Personal fave, killer midtempo from the Moments lead. Drill hole and X on label.)

Opportunity Please Knock Chorus – I’ll be back / All this talk about freedom – Ramsel / EX / £45 (Powerful anti Vietnam double header, on the same Chicago label as Wade Flemons. The slower side is the far better one IMO.)
Imperial Wonders – Turned around over you / You live only once – Solid Foundation / EX / £35 (Original copy of this classy Ohio double header, modern dancer backed with perfect sweet soul.)
Connie Laverne – Can’t live without you / Phyllis Hyman – Can’t live without you – Expansion / EX / £50 (Reissue with Connie Laverne’s modern masterpiece, backed with Mrs Hyman’s previously unreleased version.)
Jermaine Jackson – Good for the gander – [white label] / EX / £45 (Monster Philly dancer! Previously unissued. Single sided test pressing that I believe Ralph Tee had made around 2002 when it first appeared on the lovely Spirit of Philadelphia comp.)
Bobby Thurston – Treat me the same way / Just ask me – Expansion / EX / £40 (2001 re-issue with two of the best sides off his “Sweetest piece of the pie” album.)
Bobby Thurston – My love is the real thing / Foolish man – Expansion / EX / £6 (2001 re-issue coupling his rare Main Line 12 inch with Main Line LP track.)
Sidney Joe Qualls – I don’t do this / Run to me – Expansion / EX / £35 (First time on 45 for this modern soul masterpiece. Flip off his nice Al Green-ish Dakar 45/LP.)

Mellow Madness – Save the youth (Kenny Dope mix) – Kay-Dee / EX / £8 (Punchy true to the original mix of this amazing modern soul rarity. With company sleeve.)
Soul Tune All Stars – Natural feeling / World – Soul Tune / EX / £8 (New release with two excellent sides of retro soul by a local Stockholm constellation.)
Alice Clark – s/t – Mainstream / EX/EX / £225 (Such a classic album, packed with goodies. “Never did I stop loving you”, “Don’t you care” etc. White label promo. Cover is in clean condition but white parts shows a little ageing.)
Karin Jones – Under the influence of love – Handshake / EX/EX / £175 (Huge personal fave with several five star tracks, both uptempo, midtempo and slow. Recorded for the T-Electric label, never released but luckily picked up by Handshake a couple of years later. iGold promo stamp on back.)
Four Tops – Reach out – Motown / EX/EX / £25 (The 1967 H-D-H produced classic. With the classic title track, “Bernadette” and “Standing in the shadows of love” but also less exposed gems such “What else is there to do”.)
Rare Gems – s/t – California Gold / EX/EX / £20 (With the soulful “You got my love” and party tracks like “Disco jam” and “Music is for dancing”. As new copy still in shrink.)
Howard Johnson – Keepin’ love new – A&M / EX/EX / £18 (With the title midtempo and more excellent funky boogie from the pen of Kashif such as “Say you wanna” and “So glad you’re my lady”.)
Coke Escovedo – Comin’ at ya! – Mercury / VG/VG / £18 (“Runaway” and “I wouldn’t change a thing”, later is a great dance version of the Johnny Bristol MGM cut. Both these main tracks plays clean but other side of the LP has a couple of marks causing numerous clicks. Cut corner, backside has tear.)
Marvelettes – Sophisticated soul – Tamla / EX/VG+ / £18 (One of the better Motown albums of the era. With classics such as “My baby must be a magician”, “Here I am baby”, “Destination: Anywhere” but also the killer LP only NS styled dancer “Your love can save me”. Cover is clean apart from price sticker and 7cm upper seam split.)
Curtis Mayfield – Got to find a way – Curtom / EX/EX / £12 (1974 LP with a mix of softer sounds and slightly funkier Superfly like tracks. Cover still in shrink, complete with insert.)
Eddie Holman – I love you – Abc / EX/EX / £8 (The master balladeer! With the amazing title track, “Hey there lonely girl” and “Don’t stop now”. Cover has cut out hole.)
Tyrone Davis – s/t – Highrise / EX/VG+ / £6 (Essential for 2 step lovers, “Are you serious”, “Overdue” & “Where did we lose”. Cover has small number written on it, price sticker and a bumped corner.)
Aretha Franklin – You – Atlantic / EX/EX / £6 (Superb Gene Page produced LP. With standouts being “It only happens”, “The sha-la bandit” plus the best track she might ever have been on “You’ve got all the aces”. Cover, and label has small writing.)
Blue Notes – s/t – Glades / EX/EX / £6 (With the dancer “Standing by you girl” and the even better, and LP only cut “We can make it”. Sounds like a four figure 45. Cut out saw mark.)
