Not being a Northern or 60's collector, means I have very little in the way of pre-1973 45's, however from the limited number I do have here's seven that I particularly like from 1971 or earlier.

I thought I'd post them up to gauge a reaction on them. See what you think :

The Chants - Wearing a smile UK Decca 1967

The Producers - Love is amazing US Huff Puff 1970 ? (Undated - anyone know exact year)

Bull and the El Capalara's - No sign of sadness US Bell 1971

Gayle McCormick - If only you believe UK Probe 1971

Showstoppers - Pick up your smile UK Beacon 1971

and two on the Enterprise label (US) in a crooner-ish style but both good IMO :

Chuck Boris - You'll wake up wiser 1969/70 ?

Casper Peters - Find my way 1970

Great record brought to my attention by SHSDave (thanks mate!), originally played for the instrumental flip of Dee Dee Sharp.

Gayle McCormick - If only you believe UK Probe 1971

Released for the A side "It's a cryin' shame", not heard this out in years.

Showstoppers - Pick up your smile UK Beacon 1971

Found a new lease of life after a few net mentions for this non US 45. More crossovery than Northern though.

Martin this is the original version to the well known Betty Lavette release on Atco circa 1973.

Thanks Pete, great minds think alike ! What do you know about The Chants, the flip is written by "Amoo" so were they by any chance a prototype version of The Real Thing ? The A side is written by, and both sides produced by Ivor Raymonde, is he someone who was well known on the 60's scene ? I assume it's a British production ?

Yes they did evolve into the real thing and Ivor Raymonde's name appears on countless UK 60's records. Think he did David Bowie's Deram album, eh Tone?

yes as Pete said they became the real thing, you need to watch those repeats of 'wheeltappers and shunters' on cable to see the chants in action inbetween bernard manning and a bloke spinning plates on sticks (hands up who remembers that top 70's stage practice, bring it back). they also did the great 2 stepper 'i've been trying' on chipping norton. then when they were the real thing they did 'children of the ghetto' i think the kids call it a choon

I'd forgotten that Chipping Norton 45, I had that many years ago, not any longer tho. Got a funk track on Chipping Norton, Command Decision "Swahili", that one is the Olympic Runners in disguise.

Got another early Real Thing 45, Vicious Circle, on both Bell and EMI, but don't recall it being great.

Wheeltappers and Shunters - Forgotten all about that one, can anyone recall whether it was worse that Love Thy Neighbour ?
