The soul / R&B original memorabilia offerings continue. Garnet Mimms performance contract (Phil Walden Artists & Promotions) today. The contract is dated October 1965, for a combined appearance of Garnet Mimms with (band of) Leroy Lloyd and the Swinging Dukes.
For a wee bit of history and context, here goes:
The venue the booking is for is the Pi Kappa Phi frat house (University of Alabama). The lobby of that frat house was big enough to be used for bands to set up stage, and the booking is for December 3, 1965 - presumably their end-of-semester Christmas bash. The original house was burnt down in 2019, after lying dormant for 20 years. As an aside, Mimms' appearance here was in the same year he recorded “It was easier to hurt her" for United Artists, and just before “Looking for you” was released. Leroy Lloyd was a South Carolina musician / band leader who had settled in Georgia by this point, so with Phil Walden's Artists and Promotions based in Macon, the coupling of Mimms and Lloyd's Swinging Dukes is logical. Lloyd had his own releases through to at least the mid 1970s - writing, producing and recording via Minaret.
