Won a 45 on Ebay last night, final price around £250 from USA, paid through paypal, postage costs stated to uk $0.50, i thought this a bit strange but thats what it said so thought hey, result,

Just got an email from seller, saying i have paid for an item and not paid postage, and the outstanding postage costs are $27.50,

I know i have only been using ebay a year or so but i have never paid or even seen postage costs so high,

Will pay it as its not a kings ransom but still, why so high? or is it the norm and ive just been lucky previously?

Hi Pete dont pay it unless it is stated in his write up that he insists on insuring the record at your cost so have a good bloody read through the description, if it dont then ask for standard airmail which should be about $7/8 max uninsured, the other thing is that if it is insured and he quotes the value on the postage you might be liable for import tax or whatever its called,

On the other hand do want to risk a £250 record uninsured?

Definately not the norm in my experience. Most i've ever paid was around $12 i think and that was a rip-off and never bought from that dealer again (i suspected him of trying to make up the shortfall on the final bid). Usually i pay around $6 - $7 for one 45. This bloke is taking the p*ss or is slapping every insurance possible on it. Maybe he's also trying to make up the shortfall and thinks he should have got another $20 for the item?

You've been unlucky this time. Easy to say in hindsight but if you're not sure of the postage i'd mail the seller before placing a bid (if you have time).

Like said will pay it this time as i don't want to lose the 45 (a long time want) but will remember the seller for the future,

Ask the seller what shipping method he is using. Airmail is $6-7. But global express mail, which is the only way to get a tracking number, starts at $21 and can go higher. As a seller I would never ship an item that expensive without a tracking number (but I would state that upfront in the auction and I actually usually pay shipping on items that high). It is lame for a seller to spring that on you.
