Decided it is time to change my stylus, only thing is i have no idea how to remove it, a couple of years back i upgraded my cartridge and like some total idiot thought i could fit it myself.NOOO.anyhow i destroyed the tonearm, ended up sending my turntable away for around 2 weeks to get everything fitted and fixed, cost me double what i had initially paid. So this time i'm not touching anything till i know what to do.

I use a Pro-Ject turntable and the cartridge is an "Ortofon 530 Mk11", any help?

I have already e-mailed various Hi-Fi companies, but thought there may be some audophile on here that knows.

I totally sympithise with you Brett, a really iffy task, unless you have steady hand and nimble fingers its an absolute nightmare!, I changed mine sometime last year but had a LARGE glass of red wine followed by breathing exercises, IT WORKED!!, good luck!

Take the old one off - easy.

Then tell a load of your soulie mates you're having a party.

When they arrive just go "oh bugger, sorry".

They'll have it sorted in a flash!

Changing the stylus should be straight forward. Should just slide / clip off. I've only ever had trouble on 1 deck (NAD) but that's when I was changing the cartridge too which was fixed on with 2 tiny screws and was adjustable. Nightmare and subsequently put me right off the system and make. Try gently removing your old stylus, if no joy, ask one of your mates or take the whole deck to your local hi-fi shop who should should do it in 2 secs. Better than wrecking your whole arm!

Remember you should change your stylus on a regular basis, old worn styli will wreck your records!

If your current deck is difficult to change, consider changing as I'm sure it will put you off replacing your stylus, which you shouldn't be the case!

Yeah Sam, changing the stylus should be a straight forward affair, but the cartridge really should be done by a professional, still waiting on some advice via Hi-Fi specialists, have tried to gently pull the thing off, but like i said i'm rather cautious....don't wanna knacker things again, sort of the devil and the deep blue sea though.

Like you say you really should replace your stylus after "x" amount of hours play, otherwise you could end up with your valuble collection destroyed.

I've got the same deck as you a Project which you lift the platter,and change the belt over.What a pain in the arse,especially as I buy a lot of 12's which a lot don't have the speed written on the label.

The stylus on mine looks as if you have to take a couple of little of screws out,and take the wires off the back of the stylus.

I think Technics is the way to go!!

Brett my son, a direct drive turntable will change your life mate, for a easy on the wallet deck try a Gemini XL 300, should get for 100-150 quid depending on dealer, I am now answering this thread after being out with the missus for a meal and loads of wine, beer ect, but no do to go to tonight so you will have to put up with my half pissed replies try The DJ Box website, they do a great deal

Brett, the NAD i had was a belt driven table and I had to physically change the belt like yourself. After my episode with the cartridge changing, I was put right off it like I said and so decided on some direct drive tables and havn't regretted it one bit! Changing the stylus and cartridges is a breeze compared. Stylus slides off/on and cartridge clips out. As it should be. As far as sound deteriotaion, I han't noticed at all. Maybe my system isn't good enough to notice the difference, but I'm running it thru a decent Marantz amp...

I don't think you'll go wrong with Technics decks either, I think they may be half decent at making decks

Now then mate,

I've seen your very smart turntable. It does look the part.

I was a bit 'Mr Friday Night' when I saw it, and can't remember what your head shell looks like.

It should, as mentioned be a case of removing 2 screws from the top where it secures the cartridge to the shell, then just gently removing the 4 slide-on wires at the back of the cartridge.

Repeat the process in reverse to replace it. I've got a pair of Technics 1210 Mk 5G, which come with a 'spacer' so that when you reset your cartridge and tighten up the screws, the projection of the stylus is in the correct position.

Although because I'm a complete clumsy b'stard, I decided to opt for the Ortofon DJ S cartridges. Basically idiot proof, no wires and just lock into the tone arm. Replacing the stylus on those as mentioned is just a slide out and slide in affair (oo-er )

Update.....

managed to pull the stylus section off, it was just a case of pulling and it came away, i did undo the screws on the headshell, then realised this wasn't neccesary.

Anyhow i'm off to order the replacement stylus, costs around £70, so hopefully i've caused no lasting damage.

If the deck doesn't function, then i'll have no choice but to walk into Sevenoaks Hi-Fi and cut my own hands off with a "Prussian Uhlan" hunting sword, just as a lesson to others.

From experience, Brett, it gets a bit tricky after the first one

Project debut mark 2 is belt driven and speed is changed by switch on deck. Mind you mine's nackered as the transformer is not working. It has a built in pre amp so you plug it into line in/ aux/ anything but DON'T plug it into phono.

I DJ on Technics 1210's and that's what they're good for . Spending £350 on a deck for your home is a waste of money unless it is a HiFi deck. The project debut with cart is £170 . You can upgrade the cart.
